I've been trading around 8-9 months now with some good returns, 10-20% conservatively estimated by the week. Chatting with some fellow traders tonight I found I was one of a very few who just couldn't be asked to do the mission grinding routine. I'd been there and done that with my first character so I just never started.
Maybe it's due in some part to the fact I trade regionally and don't often ply the razor thin margins at Jita, but I just don't see how all the time input pays off in anything but the very (read as: burnout) long run. In the time it takes me to go out and do 16 missions for a storyline, I could have researched and setup a lot of profitable orders and contracts, set my lovely Red Frog pals to do a bit of arbitrage for me, and still have some hours to spare.
Am I way off base here? Fountain of additional isk at my fingertips if only I can stomach a few hundred hours of missions? Or am I correct in assuming a silent majority like me doesn't give much thought to standings and gags at the notion of running missions? |

If you make use of Datacenters, FW and COSMOS you get excellent standings to any faction over the course of a weekend. If you run for Amarr/Caldari standings then you'll also be able to grab about 3B of other rewards in the process. Pretty much all of my characters have around 8.00+ to Caldari State, Amarr Empire and Caldari Navy. |

Are you referring to the epic arc?

Do you not trade in min/gal space?

If you want to get good min/gal standings, you can make a different character for that purpose.
Bobby presumably sees no need to do so.

No. I'm referring to which pair of factions you choose to improve, because increasing Amarr/Caldari will generally sabotage your Gallente/Minmatar standings.
Willy Warbux wrote:Bad Bobby wrote:Pretty much all of my characters have around 8.00+ to Caldari State, Amarr Empire and Caldari Navy. Do you not trade in min/gal space? I have a couple of characters with good Gallente/Minmatar standings but I haven't actively traded in that area for some time.

I assume this is because of the cap on derived standings? I blew well past 7 caldari faction standing without finishing those tedious career chains, so I never even touched amarr cosmos. |

Ok, so here is a quick and dirty guide for Caldari standings, with a side order of Amarr standings.
1. Train the skills Social and Connections. Ideally to 5.
2. Do the Amarr and Ammatar datacenter agents as far as you can, see here: https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Data_Centers. These involve exchanging tags that you can buy from the market. Feel free to skip any that you feel are too expensive.
3. Join Amarr FW. Do FW missions. Get promotions and the associated faction standing increases. Once you have got the highest promotion, cash in your LP and leave Amarr FW.
4. Go back and do any Amarr and Ammatar datacenter agents that you didn't do the first time round.
5. Do the Caldari datacenter agents.
6. Join Caldari FW. Do FW missions. Get promotions and the associated faction standing increases. Once you have got the highest promotion, cash in your LP and leave Caldari FW.
7. Go to the Caldari COSMOS constellation and cherry pick missions that increase your standings and give good rewards. Pay particular attention to the Michi and Akemon missions as these give implants worth around 1B each. See here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/16401872/Cosmos-Missions-101
8. Profit! |

So the best way to do it is to get all the derived standings you can first and then get the direct standings (that do not cap off) on top of those.
Amarr COSMOS isn't that great, so I don't bother with it myself. You'll hit the derived standings cap easily without it.

Addendum to Bobby's excellent post:
Before you join either of the militia's for FW purposes check how many of the agent systems the militia controls. Recent changes to FW have made it so that members of the militia can no longer dock in stations in systems that have been flipped by the enemy militia. This means that almost all the mission agents can be unavailable depending on the state of the warzone. For instance, back in around November last year there was a period of multiple months when only two Caldari agents were available due to the Gallente controlling almost the entire warzone. You DO NOT want to grind standings with a small number of agents as doing it efficiently involves accepting and completing the missions in large batches. There are two types of EVE player:

You can also do the Sisters of EVE arc every three months. A combat alt can complete the combat missions for a non-combat alt. The SoE arc has the advantage of raising one faction a significant amount without hurting any of the others.

I did that, and I am about to get my hauler to do it (+ screenshot the direct branching from tutorial end).
What I want to know, find out, ask or ... is:
1. How hard is COSMOS to do? I think I might be able to solo or dual-client it but I am not sure of the rewards.
2. Can FW be done solo? If so how, what about dual-client ? (I have a BS and Destroyer available.)
3. Can I get any faction standing to level 3 with SOE Arc? I got my SOE standing to around level 2, and 1 other corporate standing to level 3, but only Distribution. I read it was possible to get one to level 4 at the last missions but I don't know how. My faction standing is only around 1.7 or so.

There are a lot of easy courier missions, but there are also some fairly hard combat missions and some of the action occurs in low-sec or requires you to fly through low-sec.

Remember you'll be doing them in low-sec, so make sure whatever ship you use can handle that.

I take them seriously.
I enjoy best tax rates for all 4 major high sec trade hubs. (( and pretty good rates anywhere else due to empire standings all positive. ))
You need atleast one in your area for refining and getting jump clones. Within 2 jumps preferred. (( Although only the corps at the trade hub you use will help with taxes ))
Distribution agents can get you a corp up fast. (( Highly recommended for trade toons. ))
If you can handle security missions or just want to mine away for some awful reason you could do that too.
If you are after all 4 trade hubs standings plan on running a ton of missions. |

That's good to read and get a reply that I can do COSMOS missions. I always thought that it was an endgame and that I would never have the time to do them. I may test in low-sec with the proper scout and my BS. I think it'd be best with at least a BC and BS though. I can see 2 of my BS die in low-sec and I was ambushed in situation where 2 of my BS would die.
I'll check up on those now and try to reply or EVE Mail you. (I don't think I can send you ingame ISK through EVE Gate.) https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/COSMOS https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/COSMOS#High_Security_-_Algintal_constellation http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=203348 http://eveinfo.com/cosmos/gallente/

Remember you'll be doing them in low-sec, so make sure whatever ship you use can handle that. I have a Stealth Bomber which is inactive at the moment although I may be able to reactivate it and test it there. I can also dual-client. I triple-client before, but the lag does get unbarrable and worst than if dual-client or single client.
My biggest concern will be scouting in low-sec as I have been there before and can't stand the pirate infested system. Nothing easier than spot me and call in a pirate that logs in to intercept me (and loot my ship).
Is it correct that FW can be better than COSMOS for loot but COSMOS is better for standing than FW?
To OP, I hate missions. I raised my trader sales skills and get the max tax rate benefit in all stations equally, regardless of standing. That only holds true for sales, like sales of loot and sales of salvage or sales of anything. Sales translates into ingame ISK, in many languages and all conditions. There is nothing else it does but increase income.
I don't buy anything to resell.
The only reason I get standing is not for my trader but to test my income per hour. The reason I test my income per hour is to compare with other activity. I am quite sure the income level would be higher at mission level 4 and 5. It is low at Distribution or Courier level 3. The standing is better than nothing, but not very good. The best thing is the storyline every 16 mission and the LP.

Very seriously... taxes and reprocessing rates amongst other issues.
And very damn seriously Standings had better be part of the new Industry system -- although I understand several Devs are now at least looking at this issue and perhaps it's one of the reasons most of the Industry has been pushed back to July 22-ish.

Depending on what kind of business you do, you can easily do the math yourself.
For example, ISK-wise I'd benefit much more from updating my sell orders more frequently (2-3 times a day instead of 1-2) than from lower transaction costs.
Since I'm not willing to invest 5 more minutes a day, for me it would be pointless to invest several hours of boring grind for less benefit. |

It depends on how long you're planning to play for though. Good standings shave off nearly a whole percent from the cost of every buy/sell transaction cycle and that adds up fast. An extra 1% profit on every trade you make forever after is well worth investing a few hours in, especially if you trade non-trivial amounts.
That said, when I started I was trading stuff with very high margins and adding an extra 1% to what was already a 25% margin didn't seem worthwhile. But once I had the standings sorted it also opened up a lot of extra possibilities for trading high-volume low-margin goods that aen't available to people without them. What you say makes perfect sense to continuously improve and expand your trading business.
For me personally, trading (with some manufacturing on the side) is the most fun way to make the ISK i need to PVP with relatively low effort. Once I get (more than) enough ISK / month, my only goal is minimizing the effort. |

As a fellow Faction Warrior it's nice that PvP in our area is pretty low maintenance. Think I killed you in a derptron swarm once or twice in Kehjari last weekend in fact. Can't beat fun fights in sub 2mil ships. There are two types of EVE player:

I also like slightly more expensive stuff and - more importantly - the cash to afford a well-stocked hangar and module armory, so the pew never stops!
That's what got me into trading, along with my strong dislike of PVE and FW plexing (though plex LPs are certainly a nice bonus while you're PVP-ing anyway). |
