Hey, I'm pretty new at this game and I have decided I want to go down the path of mining. Now I know what skills I need for ships and I know what minerals are the most efficient to mine, but I was wondering what is the most efficient way to actually mine? I have a corp of 4 IRL friends two of which want to do mining as well. So what is the best way to mine with 3 people? I know about jetcan mining and have been doing that with one of them. I am using a venture ship with two miner 1s until my skills train up. So basically what is the best way to mine, and what is the best way to make money off my ore (selling, refine then sell, build stuff and sell, etc)?
Also any tips and tricks for easier or faster mining would be nice.
Thanks, Alaric |

Jet can mining is one of the worst ways to mine. It is just asking for someone to come along (like me) with a ore hauler and pop the can and run away.
I suggest you train someone up for an Orca if you plan on h-sec mining and using Covetors (Hulks are gank targets). Since you only have about 3 people (or you want to low sec/ null sec mine) I suggest you stick to a Mackinaw or a Retriever since you wont have to can mine. I can pull in about 15-20m / hour worth of ore in H-sec being an afk carebear with retrievers so.... |

With just 3 people mining, I reckon an easy and still rather efficient approach is to just have 3 people mining.
An Orca-pilot boosting is a big benefit to the yield of the other miners, but it does cut the number of miners down from 3 to 2, which is a big drop. You can ofcourse use the Orca to store and haul ore, making it serve a dual purpose, but even then I'm not sure if the benefit outweighs the loss of a miner. Furthermore, an Orca is quite expensive and even if it offers an advantage to use, with the advantage being so small in such a small fleet it'll take a long time to earn back the investment.
The same applies for a hauler in a Miasmos. The ship is very cheap and easy to fly, but you again lose a miner. One thing you can consider is to have 3 people mine for a while, fill up some jetcans and then have 1 person reship to the Miasmos, haul everything to a station and then reship back to his mining vessel. Only do this if you're in a quiet system where there are no can-stealers.
What you should do in any case is have one of the players train Leadership 1 and then Mining Foreman. This skill boosts the yield of all fleeted miners in the same system and it's very quick to train at least to level 3 or 4, for 6-8% more yield. |

mining gets really boring really fast. if your friends and you are not willing to get drunk every night to survive the boredom, you should consider another activity. if you are dead set on mining, the most efficient way is to have an orca for boost and a freighter for hauling. to mitigate the setback from the two supporting chars, you should have at least four (better ten or more) chars in mining ships. also keep in mind that even in the best circumstances, mining will only get you 25-30 million per hour per account.

Despite the opinions here decrying mining; if this is something you enjoy then go for it. There are plenty of players that enjoy the industrial aspects of EvE.
Starting out in a venture and jet-canning is a good way to go. It sounds like a natural progression would be to save up for some Covetors and continue to jet-can.
Keep an eye on the price of the ore you are mining and realize that they don't all sell for the same price. If you move to some out of the way systems (with lower security status) you can find bigger asteroids that 'may' be worth more than what you're mining now. The downside here is you still have to transport all that ore to a hub to sell (you could do some math here to figure out an optimal distance where the availability of belts is still worth the time to transport).
Remember the lower the security status the more delayed concord's response is to player aggression. i.e. at the edge of high security space (.5) concord takes significantly longer to show up than in a .9 or .8 system. Players can and will use this to their advantage. .4 space or lower (low security) players can and will engage you with minimal or no concord intervention. It is generally best not to mine in these places unless you like living dangerously (then I'd have to ask why you're in a mining barge).
Another question to keep in the back of your mind: when you and your mates have put some Isk in your wallets - will you continue to mine just for the sake of mining? Will you use it to fun some lowsec frigate expeditions? Will you foray into some PVE content like missions or exploration? Are you going to build an industrial empire and use your Isk to buy researched blue prints?

Greetings, citizen Alaric. I'm glad you started this thread because I bring good news! There is a man who has figured out the best way to mine, fly, and live the pod life; for yourself and for the betterment of all Highsec space. I speak of James 315 and The Code.
By taking up the mining trade you have merely come to a crossroads. One path leads to boredom, arrested development, and a worse game for you and everyone trying to find their way in this strange galaxy. The other path, the righteous one, leads to you and those you encounter in space learning and growing as players. You cannot mine forever, for this is a terrible way to spend your subscription fee. What you CAN do is seek the enlightenment of others and take it to heart. Agents of the New Order of Highsec, adherents to The Code all, are here to help.
Lo! Here are some tips to get you started:
To optimize the mining with three lowly-skilled players in ventures, the time it takes to fly back to the station and deposit the ore is so insignificant that all three of you should fly ventures. You can be back in the belt practically by the time the next mining cycle would have started. Far more efficient than if just two of you mine while someone else flies an industrial.
Tank your mining barges when you get them. Arm yourself against random gankers.
Understand that there is more to this game than mining. However, to spice things up you should be aware that higher end ores can be found in mining exploration sites, and lower-than-Highsec regions of the game. Highsec mining sites are typically bad because tritanium / veldspar is typically the most efficient ore if ISK is what you're after. To mine elsewhere, forge relationships in this vast multiplayer game, and find a group of players who can carve out a spot for you outside of Highsec. The ore you mine will not be as ISK efficient, but you will probably mine it for manufacturing purposes. Thus, the fruit of your labor will fuel the conquests of your corp.
Do not equip mining drones.
Depending on the region, it may or may not be more efficient to sell the raw ore or the refined material. However, your manufacturing options are limited with the mineral types derived from Highsec mining. Refining and manufacturing require a separate set of skills to increase efficiency, so until they are trained it's best to sell what has been mined. Usually. You have to look at the numbers in your home region and decide for yourself.
Do not let anyone lead you into rebellion against The Code. These people want to make you serfs to the mining game, and eventually bot-aspirants. You may as well just load a bot program and receive your ban from CCP.
Follow The Code. -á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á-á "LIVE FAST DIE." - traditional Minmatar ethos [citation needed] |

Some miners do still use the 'jet can' method notably fleets of Procurers mining ore with Orca or hauler support. With increased sub-warp speed and increased drone damage in the changes on Tuesday it will more risky for 'jet can' thieves .
It is better atm to sell refined ore ie minerals rather than unrefined ore providing you have the skills trained up to get zero waste and 6.67 'effective' standings with the NPC corporation whose station you wish to refine at. 'Effective' means including the effect of any 'social' skills you have trained. After the industry changes on July 22nd you will also need to buy and fit a RX-804, I think, hardwiring to gain 'perfect' refine.
After the industry changes on July 22nd it is open to speculation how the market will go and whether ore, compressed ore, or minerals will make the most ISK. At that point it will be possible to set up a POS in high sec systems and compress your ore in a POS array if you choose to which will enable more ore to be hauled in cargo holds. There are many variables and no one can say for certain what will happen. Except for 'The Mittani'.
Regarding ships you will probably be best served using a Retriever or a Procurer if you are encountering 'problems'. The new Skiff vessel looks interesting as well in the changes on Tuesday. There is a new 'cloaky' version of the Venture coming out on Tuesday called the Prospect which may be of interest to you. Although it will initially be prohibitively expensive as with all new ships.
Do your maths occasionally to see what is best to mine. Currently Veldspar due to its high Tritanium content, the price of which is currently spiking, is THE ore to mine atm but it changes from time to time.
Regarding ship fittings it is wise to fit some 'tank' to your ship unless you want to have profits cover the inevitable occasional ship losses. Shield extenders and higher kinetic & thermal resistances should be your aim for a good tank. Don't be the '3 MLU' guy. Everyone laughs at them.
Have fun, be polite, don't get angry If you lose your ship to a ganker, don't advertise your player corp as a mining or industrial corp, don't mine where someone else is mining, and HAVE FUN !! |

An Orca provides sufficient advantage over a mining director in a mining ship that it's worth using from about the time your mining fleet reaches three pilots.
The benefits of an Orca are:
- Reduced cycle time
- Extended laser range
- ~100k m3 or ore storage in belt
- Capacity to switch ships without returning to station
- Easier to move around than a Rorqual, and can be used in hi sec unlike the Rorqual
In my fleets, for example, we'll have one pilot who mines until the Orca is full, then switches to a Miasmos (carried in the Orca's ship maintenance bay) to haul the ore back to station. Some people fly the Orca back to station, but I prefer hauling with the Miasmos since it can unload the Orca in two trips, and complete those two trips faster than the Orca can (Miasmos with Hyperspatial Velocity rigs, nanofiber internal structure modules). While the Orca is not in belt the miners will lose their laser range and reduced cycle time, which puts a dampener on the mining operation.
Using the Orca in belt means you can use Hulks for optimum yield, which means you'll get a few more percent on your yield per hour. Just remember to suitably tank all your ships, and avoid systems where gankers are active or have been active recently. Do not fit for optimum yield unless you are in safe systems (i.e.: noone else in local, in a cynojammed system with all approaches observed by active players in intel channels that you are monitoring).
