I'm new to the game so am probably missing something but I don't see the point in the skill. All it does is reduce the amount of isk tied up in buy orders but you still have to have enough isk in your wallet to buy the item if it is sold to you making any isk in your wallet useless which would otherwise be in the order.
Only reason I can think of for training it is for the margin trading scams. http://filmskribenten.dk/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/nicolas-cage-cat.jpg |

It's for having a whole bunch of long range buy orders open while you use the cash to actually make money rather than having it tied down in one place. The odds of them all coming due at once are very small (but sure, you get screwed if you don't have cash on hand under those circumstances) so you can make the decision to allocate that capital elsewhere rather than just having it sit in escrow. |

The overwhlming marjority of margin trades are legitimate orders. "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his ISK/hr depends upon his not understanding it!" |

It's not mostly used in scams. Those just happen to be the more visible usage of the skill, so it's the one people whine about.
I have it trained quite high. I manufacture stuff mostly. The skill allows me to put up orders for materials where I don't have the cash right now, but I know that I will have it (from sell orders selling) by the time that the buy order is half-fulfilled (the first half I did put in escrow)
It's letting me 'borrow' against tomorrow's income to get a higher turnover. |

I use Margin Trading a lot. Margin Trading takes less out of my wallet when placing an order, so I can place more orders.
Example: I need 100 million units of Tritanium. I then place station-only buy orders at stations X, Y, Z for 100 million units of Tritanium. The order can be filled at any station I designate, and I don't care how much gets filled at a given station. If you use a single order for 100 million units of Tritanium with a region order, you will be picking-up small quantities amounts all over the region until the end of time. |

Thanks for that explanation. I actually see the point in it now which seems incredibly obvious now you have pointed it out http://filmskribenten.dk/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/nicolas-cage-cat.jpg |

Basically if you want to do something/are doing something wich needs most of your isk tied up in buy orders then the margin trade skill is essential to have.I trained it to lvl V years ago when i did regional reproc buyorders for mission loot and it gave me the option to have mass orders in 3 regions.Without that skill it would have taken a hell of a lot longer to make progress in trade and expanding the daily income to my net worth.
It is one of the most usefull skills for a trader/industrialist , however it is mostly know for the scam-tactic because people affected by it through a scam usually have totally no idea how it can affect a traders way of working.
We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid.

It is a critical trading skill (although you can get by with 4 for most purposes, or 3 if you want it just for the scam).
With MT at 4, I can place an extremely speculative buy order that I do not expect will fill, but that will make me a lot of ISK if it does. It is more important if you are dealing in large numbers of rare items. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=346564 - a proposal to overhaul the Logistics skill https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. www.minerbumping.com - ganking miners and causing chaos |

You can launch a lot of buy orders in distant regions with it. Might save a lot of trouble for rookie miners, who can sell stuff to your meeting end. They'll take forever to fully fulfill it, so you'll most likely have enough money by the time they'll be needed. |
