Hey,
I'm sure this has been debates before but when I searched I couldn't find a good enough breakdown so here goes
I can fly a tengu, and I would say I can fly it reasonable well (still needs more training, but hey, what doesn't). Currently I'm training into a Dominix and after that I'm considering training for a Tempest. I really don't like Battleships/Big Ships all that much though, so I've been considering training into other T3s. As I've stated, I can fly a Tengu already, and I'm now considering the Proteus and Loki (Not going to bother with Legion because amarr is not really my thing).
What is the main differences and roles between the T3s? The general consensus seems to be; Tengu is good for solo PvE, Proteus is good for cloak, and Loki is good for webbing... is that all to it? What roles do they fit and for example what makes a Proteus excell at being cloaky?
Thanks in advance |

If you run the gallente line, you'll get access to quite a lot of drone ships (and those gall/cald pirates). In a wormhole atleast, railprot/blasterprot and the cloaky one all are pretty reliable, so you wouldn't do anything wrong using them.
So you'd also fit into Ishtar/Gila, both are solid ships in nearly all situations, benefiting from the drone-skills invested for the dominix. "I honestly thought I was in lowsec"

T3s are so much more than that.
-Tengu is the swiss army knife of EVE, it does everything well but nothing great. Don't believe the Tengu hype, there is a big difference between good and great.
PVE/PVP ratio on it - 80/20
-Proteus is a PVP beast, tackle range, great tank, great DPS but with rails can work in PVE as well just not as good
PVE/PVP ratio on it - 10/90
-Loki is great due to its webs with some decent tank as well
PVE/PVP ratio on it - 20/80
-Legion can go many ways, neuts, lasors, missles. Especially lasors and their low ammo usage makes them good for wormholes
PVE/PVP ratio on it - 40/60
---
In the end all are viable in their own way and they will be rebalanced reasonably soon as well. You should indeed train for all. |

If you've done the Cruiser V, then you should do the T3 skills. "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his ISK/hr depends upon his not understanding it!" |

The cloaky-blacker Proteus works so well because it operates where blasters are best: Point Blank. It only acheives ~500-600 dps depending on fit, but can rock battleship sized tank anywhere from 100k to 200k ehp depending on how much isk you want to throw at it.
Be smart about what ships you engage and and go for opportunistic kills and the Proteus is a very valid solo killer. That awkward moment at the Gentlemen's Club when you see your sister on the stage....and you're not sure where to put the money.... |

This is probably the best advice you can get in the thread. |

The real question is, if you don't like Battleships, why are you investing so much time into training them that could easily make for half-decent to almost max'd Tech 3s? |

Signed. T3 skills take close to no time to get to V and all of them have their own unique little roles.
If you are gearing towards PvP get Loki or Proteus as they are both decent in fleets and solo.
Tengu is, as said before, the swiss army knife of Eve. Not a real knife but you don't want to get stabbed by it either.
Legion has some nice niche uses and can be a scary brawler.
For PvE purposes a Tengu is usually more than enough tho. 2013.03.01 13:30:58 notify For participating in the General Discussion Forum Section your trustworthiness has been adjusted by -2.5000.

This. Getting all of a single race's subsystems to 5 (1x) is less time than racial battleship 5 (8x).
It's a lot less if you're not perception/willpower spec'd.
You can even probably die twice in those 25 days, and still re-max your subsystem skills before your buddy finishes training BS5.
