EVE numbers are ridiculous. We all know itGǪ yet I decided to do some fun calculations to find out more about XL weaponry and the numbers involved. So for the following ridiculous eve numbers GÇô I have used the NaglfarGÇÖs Depleted Uranium XL shells.
Firstly, this XL shell can come in two sizes.. 3500mm or 2500mm. I will run calculations for both of these sizes.
https://image.eveonline.com/Type/20739_64.png
From the above picture, we can work out the approximate shell size. The base is 5mm in diameter and the height is 15mm. By using that ratio, we find out that the 3500mm shell is 10.5 metres tall and the 2500mm shell is 7.5 metres tall. Next IGÇÖll work out the volume of each shell. The Problem is, that the cone isnGÇÖt perfect and is rather round. Therefore IGÇÖll calculate what a perfect cone would be volume-wise and then add 20%.
The cylindrical section of the 3500mm shell is 7 metres tall, and so has a volume of 67.37m3. The cone section is 3.5 metres tall and so has a volume of 11.22m3, +20% = 13.46m3. Therefore, the total volume of the 3500mm shell is 80.83m3.
The cylindrical section of the 2500mm shell is 5 metres tall and so has a volume of 24.55m3. The cone section is 2.5 metres tall and so has a volume of 4.09m3, +20% = 4.91m3. Therefore the total volume of the 2500mm shell is 29.46m3.
Now IGÇÖd like to work out the weight of each warhead. We donGÇÖt know if it is rocket assisted or not, but for the sake of this calculation, IGÇÖll say it isnGÇÖt. Therefore we have a 13.46m3 warhead for the 3500mm shell and a 4.91m3 warhead for the 2500mm shell.
Depleted Uranium has a density of 19.1g/cm3. Therefore the 3500mm shellGÇÖs warhead weighs 257,086 kg, and the 2500mm shellGÇÖs warhead weighs 93,781 kg.
Therefore in a full volley, the Naglfar fires: With artillery GÇô 2,056,688kg of Depleted Uranium With autocannons GÇô 1,125,372kg of Depleted Uranium
To put this into perspective, the HMS Amazon, a Destroyer built after WWI, weighed 1,371,663kg. Therefore, the Naglfar fires 1.49 HMS Amazons a volley, with artillery.
Now, IGÇÖd like to work out the potential energy of each warhead as well. Again, we donGÇÖt know the muzzle velocity of the NaglfarGÇÖs weaponry so this is an estimation. Modern tank cannons get muzzle velocities of around 1700m/s, therefore IGÇÖll use that as a benchmark for the following calculations. I do believe this will be lower than it should be considering GÇÿfutureGÇÖ tech in the EVE universe, but it is close enough.
For the 3500mm shell firing 257,086kg at 1700m/s, the energy it releases per shot is the same as 88.8 tons of TNT. This equates to a full Naglfar volley power of 710.4 tons of TNT.
For the 2500mm shell firing 93,781kg at 1700m/s, the energy it releases per shot is the same as 32.4 tons of TNT. This equates to a full Naglfar volley power of 388.8 tons of TNT.
To put that in perspective, the largest conventional weapon made by man, the Russian, GÇ£Father of All BombsGÇÖ, has a yield of 44 tons of TNT. So the Naglfar fires 16.1 FOABGÇÖs worth of energy every volley, with artillery.
Some very interesting numbers in all of the above calculations and it really makes you think. The one thing that sticks on my mind is the fact that the Naglfar can throw out more than a destroyer every volley and yet that doesnGÇÖt instantly kill everything it touches.
What do you think?

If you really want to blow your own mind, look at how much volume the game says they take up; ie, how many you can store in cargo and load into the weapon. I did this actual volume calculation with frigate ammo before and was amused to say the least. Rifterlings pirate corporation is now recruitng members for lowsec PvP operations. And the mass of each shell is 1 kg.
According to wikipedia, 21.5 MT is "the maximum theoretical yield from 1 kg of matter by converting all of the mass into energy."
Also, remember that we have hybrid anti-matter rounds, which implies being able to mass produce (and safely transport and store) anti-matter, yet we sill use other types of ammunition.
It's simpler to just realize that CCP's science team is more about the "fiction" in "science fiction" than the any "science."

you are making alot of ....earth bound assumptions.
remember you are in space, its not a tank-cannon with the same limitations. (look up dora-canon to see what we already did on earth....in the '40s)
The Naglfar has a mass of 1,127,500,000kg. Therefore, launching 1,371,663kg (your number) is absolutely non problematic at all, you can do that railgun-style, there is no friction, you don't push against atmosphere. Your limiting factor is "energy" (on the host vessel)....EvE is 5000 years in the future...calculate matter/antimatter function to get relistic numbers.
But yea, EvE is a game...and not a good space game at that. Warfare in Space would be dramatically different anyways then what EvE portrays. |
