Based off the historical example of the ice ship research during earth history, a means to supplement the shield integrity with a solid element in order to produce a much stronger defense has been discovered.
Reference to Pykrete here.
Simply put, a barge or exhumer sacrifices some of the ore it has mined, and releases this ore into it's shield matrix as a reinforcing element.
The net effect of this, is that the shields plus an amount of ore equal to the shields hp in m3, boosts the shield strength to three times normal, and has the following statistics.
Resistances: Equal to whichever is higher by armor or shields for this craft, after modification by pilot skill and fitted equipment.
This creates a strong, highly resistive, shield for temporary use.
Negative impact: The shield enhancement is lost when the ship enters warp, as it cannot be held in place during this by the shield generators. The ore used for this is also lost, as it is effectively pulverized beyond recovery in the process. The ore must be present in the ore hold before being deployed. This means the ship must either mine the ore first, or bring enough with it to start the enhancement.

Or you could, you know, flt a tank on your barge. Or fly a Procurer/Skiff. |

To perform this type of defense, the player must already expect hostiles to show up, enough to invest ore on this.
Exactly the type of thing the procurer / skiff is leaning towards.
Now, why wouldn't you be willing to sacrifice ore to make your ship more combat ready? Wouldn't a procurer or skiff, be more likely to survive if not win an encounter, with this improved defense? Upgrading Local to Eliminate All AFK Influence What if Local Chat changed, Hunting the Cloaked... |

Hey, i actually really like this. It gives people a chance to dump a few mil worth of ore to save their 200mil worth of Exhumer.
Also it rewards those that are not afk and gives a bit of pause to would be high sec gankers. ;)
How about a % damage reduction from different sized weapons. (like in strategy games) And the % reduction is based on the % your ore bay is full. So for instance at 100% full ore bay: 90% small weapon reduction, 50% medium weapon reduction and 15% large weapon reduction. And at 50% full: 45/25/7.5 maybe?
This would effectively reduce the ability for cheap destroyers to Suicide Gank Exhumers in high sec so successfully. This would also give the Hulk and Covetor a better chance to defend themselves in general. The Skiff and Procurer we be ok, but the Mackinaw and Retriever would have a bit of trouble getting to a point where there's significant reduction.
This would actually very much supplement the usability of these ships in the correct order.
What would be the limit of the effect? Just warping away? A period of time? Reactivating Strip Miners?
Ohhh i got a good one. Over Heating strip miners produces this mechanic. Where it Vaporizes the ore in your hold and you have 1 cycle's worth of time reinforced? or until your modules burn out. (maybe 2-3 cycles with max skills?)
In any case, i'd like to see mining barges and exhumers get some more survivability somehow. |
