First off, I'm not here to rage, or cry about losing my precious ship. I'm here because I'm new to the game, and judging by HOW FAST I died, I need some help!
Basically I was piloting a Bestower with 1 cannon, and all increase cargo. I was down before I could even consider warping, or the guards could save me. They did come and get em after though! (Justice maybe?). I know I should probably add some type of armor improvement, but like I said, I'm new and just don't know what works and doesn't. Also, is there a better way to get to where I was than taking another ship all the way out there from my respawn? (Or faster?) Thanks! |

Well, first of all, sorry for your loss. Hope you didn't lost too much cargo.
Second, we might need some more information about how and where you were killed? Got a killmail maybe somewhere? And where were you killed? I assume this is high security space. |

Just tell us.
You must have a rough idea of what you were carrying, and your combat log will tell you what ship killed you and where it happened.
[Edit] Another crucial thing - were you on autopilot? |

The combat log section of your character-window has a list of the so-called killmails. Here you can see who killed you (or who you killed) and some other information on the type of ship, fitting and cargo, etc...
The ship you lost, a Bestower, is a ship made to haul goods across space. As such, it has very limited defensive capabilities and since it may carry valuable cargo, it is often targeted. Using modules that increase the shields, armor or hull strength and resistances will greatly improve your survivability. If you travel in high security space (hi-sec), then your goal is to survive long enough for CONCORD (the space police) to arrive and destroy the attackers. But even with top-notch defensive modules, a group of dedicated attackers can still ruin your day.
In low-sec and null-sec, the protection of CONCORD is absent and you're on your own. Here speed and the ability to evade attackers is often more important than the strength of your defenses.
On a final note, it is very tempting to use the autopilot function when flying long distances, especially with slow vessels such as a Bestower. However, autopiloted ships warp to 10-15km from the stargate and fly slowly towards the gate to make the jump. This means that it'll take more than a minute between your ship coming out of warp and it going through the gate. When you manually give the command to warp to and jump through a stargate, your ship exits warp directly on top of the gate and you can immediately jump through. |

Thanks, but that isn't helpful at all. Being told to "Read the ******* manual" and handed a pdf link with information that doesn't answer my question at all isn't appreciated. Thanks for trying though.
And I'm not sure how I even access the combat log, etc. Like I said, this is the first time I've died to a player and I have no idea what happened. I warped in, and someone was killing me, and then I died. That's all I know. I want to know what I need to do to prevent being killed as soon as I warp into an area. |

You jumped into lowsec, a 0.4 security system, so anyone can attack you without repercussions (aside from the guns on the gate attacking them, although this usually isn't lethal).

You're welcome.
Well, to expand on that a bit...
There is repercussions in lowsec if someone attacks you, they will lose some security status and may find themselves attacked by the gate's guns (or station guns if near a station), but there is no CONCORD in lowsec like you find in highsec space.
So basically what you did wrong was to simply navigate into an unsafe area of space. Bad idea trying to take a standard hauler like that into lowsec, you'll often die within a couple jumps to someone camping a gate.
So best thing to do is inspect your route before travelling and avoid lowsec systems, unless you're properly equipped to pass through them. "I been kicked out of better homes than this" - Rick James

Problems there though:- Loot will prolly be gone already
- By taking the loot with another character you'll go suspect, meaning you'll get a temp flag as a criminal yourself and can be attacked anywhere for 15mins.
In the case of your Bestower however you can see in the killmail that the stuff in your cargo hold wasn't 'green', meaning it didn't survive the wreck. So nope, nothing you can do to get it back.
Poke me ingame in a few hours if/when it ever goes online again and I'll sort you out.

Every fitted module and every item in cargo has a 50% chance of dropping as loot in the wreck. However, the wreck is lootable by anyone and once looted, the items are gone.
Note that wrecks disappear after 2 hours and with the game currently being offline for an extended period because of the Kronos update, the wreck (if it was still there) will be gone by the time the server is back up. |

A basic precaution when route-planning is to set your autopilot to 'Prefer Safer'. When you set your route it will then avoid lowsec systems if possible, but be aware that if there is no route avoiding lowsec it will plot a route with the least possible lowsec content. You can do this in the drop-down menu at top left of screen.
If you intend to do a lot of hauling look up the 'cloak/mwd trick' - it's useful in highsec as well as lowsec because you can get suicide-ganked anywhere if your attacker thinks it's worth it. |

I've never heard of bitter-noob syndrome but holy crap.
OP posts up demanding answers for their own demise, having little to no idea how to find or search for the information. A simple google of 'i just died in eve what happened' kicks back a multitude of posts in the same situation, posts that could maybe leave you to educate yourself a bit.
I'm not saying you did poorly by posting up to the forums, but if you are two days old in doing anything and start throwing out random questions like 'what just happened', I bet people are going to point you towards a manual. Or google.
I'm sorry for your loss, the first death is always the most expensive, and I'm sure someone will set you in the right direction in game, but please remember that help comes in all shapes and sizes. |

OP, I suggest you also convo in-game those two characters that killed you.
Ask them what happened, and what you could've done to avoid it.
There's a very high chance they'll give you good advice. (I would, if I were them)
Also, considering your 5M loss was big for you but relatively small by average game standards, there's a decent chance they might even give you all or part of your ISK back. (I might, if I were them, depending on the mood)
In my experience lowsec pirates are - on average - among the nicest people in EVE. (I am ) |

It's the "read the ****ing manual" that's the unacceptable bit. Aside from anything else, it's against the rules in this forum. |

To the op,
Dont let this turn you off of going into lowsec. Lowsec is actually not that difficult to navigate, it just requires preparation and awareness. The ingame map contains alot of information as to recent kills etc. . . You can use it to guide your route. Also you can scout your route and learn the warp/cloak trick, all of which will make travel through lowsec not foolproof but reasonable.
Also keep in mind while your loss may sting now as a newbee, the amt that you lost is easily recoverable - one mission, one exploration site, etc. . . can cover that loss. In short its better that you learned this stuff now when what you are carrying/flying is small potatoes then later with something blingy'er. I don't play, I just fourm warrior. |

Couldn't have put it better myself. The first time I got podded was when I tried to cross a .4 system in a poorly tanked cargo hauler. I wasn't carrying anythng particularly valuable but I was still p****d. As others have mentioned there will be occasions where you can't avoid Lo-Sec, and in thise cases the absolute worst thing you can do is use the Autopilot.
Depending on the volume of whet you're hauling there's also the option of fitting extended cargo holds to smalle ships. There's a trade-off on performance but it means you can be better armed.

i don't mean to sound like a dick and to be fair, the information in the links was pretty generic but if you intend to properly learn eve, you should get comfortable with reading long walls of text. there is just too much to know in eve to sum it up in a few words or tutorials.
