So I was thinking, which is exremely dangerous at times, about the Goons and the natural tendency to malign them. In game, they have a hell of a racket going. They've put a lot of effort into what they do, which is pretty clear to the Eve populace at large. They certainly have never claimed to be saints, and to those that they've...ahem...liberated both coin and material goods from, its not hard to find precedence. To those people, a little research goes a long way, and they don't get a lot of sympathy from me. Maybe a 'Sorry bro' but that's about it. They are the best at what they do, and live up to that reputation without fail. But more recently, a little screaming voice in the back of my head continually poses the question...
What about out of game? What are the Goons like there?
Invariably, I come to the real possibility that these guys are pretty much like the average Eve player. Work, school, wife, husband, kids, pets, bills. Sure, there may be a through and through asshat in the bunch, but the law of averages dictates that for the most part, they are just like everyone else. The only difference is that they have created a manner in which to act that is so counter to most of us, that they are villified on a level that a normal griefer can only wish to attain. They've perfected their trade, become masters of it, literally making it a profession in and of itself.
I know what you are thinking right now...alt...troll...both. But I think my track record will speak for itself concerning my once feelings on the matters of the Goons and their practices. But I have this real nasty tick, one that truly despises hypocrisy and I realized that I was in the crowd tossing tomatoes and jeering at them while enspousing a belief system of judging each person individually instead of as a whole. I am thus guilty of not living up to my own standards, of racially profiling the kettle, of doing what I do, not what I say. And after awhile, it really started bugging the everliving turds out of me.
So in an effort to rectify this, I made a couple of visits to the SA forums, just lurking and looking around. What I found was pretty much what, deep down in my misanthropic little heart, I thought I would find. Just a community of gamers that like to have fun. They know that its just a game, and they make the most of it. As others have pointed out before me, they don't hide what they do, its there for all to see. They take pride in pushing the envelope. They have a Passion for it, and it shows.
So to the Goon organization at large, sorry about that. I take my hat off to you guys, you help make this game what it is, no matter what anyone else says. It's a harsh mistress, and you guys have done a great job at helping her be the absolute best that she can be. You provide others who wish to follow in your footsteps something to aspire to, and that...THAT is a rare thing indeed. Keep it up Goons. o7
Now, start the crucification, that is what the nails are for! If you bring down a giant, you're a hero. If you kill something weak-even if it has to die-then you will endure contempt. |

I'll have to criticize your post. Basically, TL;DR. Or it would've been, had I not drunk a can of energy drink just five minutes before.
Also, you should've included a punchline or something so people could've gotten the gist without having to read your admittedly very thought-out post. Peon.

No, I am not butthurt. I've just stalked enough goons to know this. Don't ask me why I stalk no and no don't ask why certain goon pilots I know suddenly quit eve... quote CCP Spitfire

I have two IRL friends that are SA members, great people, maybe with an odd sense of humor. One of them played EVE back in the BOB days; he's my history reference. Having known these guys for quite a long time I figured, from the start rather than coming to the conclusion like you have, that Goons were simply playing the game. I don't see any grand schemes to destroy EVE in them; I would argue EVE is one of their favorite games because of the possibilities.
Anyway, gudpost deserves a bump. Leaves only the fresh scent of pine. |

Well reasoned argument, but maybe a little to meta. I don't think its quite the dichotomy you think it is. I think the Goons see a role that needs to be filled within the EVE Universe and they are more than happy to fill it. Someone has to be the villain.
Now I don't think it came about as deliberate set of acts to make it that way. I think it became what it is over time and the nature of EVE lets you do what your Id would enjoy most and some folks here respond to that aspect of it. The Goons are a banner that those folks flock to. I don't like or dislike Goons, just like I don't like or dislike Gravity, or Breathing.
Some things just are. And frankly Goons are good for business.
The Mittani and other Goons may disagree but thats my take on things. 'perfer et obdura; dolor hic tibi proderit olim'

I don't think the Goons are attempting to kill EVE as CCP are doing a good job of it them selves. The games mechanics has an edge of self destruct about it.
The sheer grind of eve makes it so unappeling for the average gamer. If you invite some one to spend 6 hours slowly dragging and dropping ore from his ships hanger to a jet can, Then ask them to pay real money for the privelage. I am sure you would get a swift NO THANKS with a possible additon of ARE YOU CRAZY!
So ya EVE is its own worst enamy. I think Goons and other big alliances add some excitment to what is in all honesty 90% grind. |

They don't bring anything into the game for YOU. They do it for themselves. If you're stupid enough to fall for the BS, well good for you.
And besides, you misunderstand Goons. They don't care what you think. And since this is obviously nothing more than a kissGoon/alt post I don't care either.

I've recently changed my mind about them. Goons are fine. They shake things up. They pull crazy crap. They push the envelope of the game. It's fine. In fact, it's commendable.

Yea kinda this. Me being a nice guy and jogging up to grab the door for the old lady walking into the store ahead of me doesn't mean much when I anonymously and deliberately cut her off in traffic 10 minutes later cause she drives like a douche.
That said, an argument can be made on a role-playing basis for their general ass-hattery in Eve. I don't mind that they exist. I might if they wipe me out some day but then again, I'm a casual and thus very mobile so instead of crying about them I could unsub and walk away from Eve for an extended length of time without batting an eye then head up to Best Buy and purchase a new game to play. That or go upstairs and play with my kid, whatever his name is.

Goons are to EVE what heels are to professional wrestling, a necessary evil. ( Ever notice how the heels seems to be having more fun to ).
For all of their bluster I'm quite convinced they're more addicted to this game than anyone else. And they need it worse. There truly is no other game that would or could allow them to be who they are.
In a perverse way they're actually helping the game in a way almost no one else could. Hulkageddon 1-4 were ignored by the Dev's totally. Goons ice interdiction has exposed an innumerable number of game mechanics flaws that have been long ignored in favor of Dress Up Barbie. While the recent band aid solutions don't fully or appropriately address the issues, Goons have certainly brought the subject to the table in a way in which no riot would have. |

Pretty much this. And yes, even I see how sycophantic my words sound, which made them all the harder to say. But the deeper view behind my words still stand. Ultimately, I must abide by my own standards or they become nothing more than hollow words. Whether or not they, or anyone else, cares is beyond me. But I care about how my words carry me forward. That's just how I see it. If you bring down a giant, you're a hero. If you kill something weak-even if it has to die-then you will endure contempt. |
