Okay, we all know what the Orbit command is. We select on an object, click on Orbit and off we go, round and round.
So far, so good.
Now my question is: is there a way to dictate the plane of orbit? Is one always going in a horizontal orbit (i.e. around the thing) or can one go in a vertical orbit (up over the top, round the back, down underneath and up the front) or can one go at an angled plane?
Furthermore does one have the ability to address the direction of the orbit?
Does anyone know? |

I don't believe so, unless you manually orbited my repeatedly clicking in space around the object on a certain plane. "Your security status has been lowered." - Hell yeah it was! |

If you orbit long enough, you will realize it is random.
You also change direction when you change velocity, which is really annoying. |

Thanks, I was trying to work this out today and I was just going boss-eyed. And I like the changing direction thing. That could be useful to know. |

Well functionality wise it makes you hard to hit given enough orbital speed. So good to keep far enough out to keep speed up, but close enough to be in range.
No way to really select direction etc. but it does go vertical, which can also be annoying if visually tracking other targets, which rats will also seem to gain a more persistent range on you. I don't know, if I go vertical I usually break and re-orbit, then send the rats more into an off-angle adjusting as needed, get them to more stack together if I can. It's just mostly a pain when you are orbiting one target, switch to another to adjust and your ship nearly stops. So I'll usually click out then try to keep momentum up then reengage the orbit when it looks to be more a proper angle. I kinda wish I could just orbit a point in space if I wanted to, rather than needing an object to orbit. |

Thank you for your reply. That's given me food for thought. |

Drop a can with a single round of ammo (or some other junk), then orbit the can. |

There are subtle ways to prevent this. You also get the same issue when you increase the range at which you orbit, but not when you decrease it. So in order to orbit more closely, just decrease range. If you want to orbit further away, fly straight from your current orbit untill you reach a value slightly above the one you want: then press orbit. Now you will actually decrease range and you won't lose velocity. I did not know changing velocity itself has a mirror effect to the one I described. Seems harder to counter, but I bet you can solve it in a similar fashion. |
