My suggestion begins with a short narrative, so please bare with me.
Not too long ago I was beseiged by pirates, killed, and podded. My clone was totally up to date so I respawned with all 10 million of my skill points. However, I was in such a rush to buy and outfit a new ship that I temporarily forgot to set a new clone, so all I had was the default 30,000 in protection. I remembered after one jump to replace the clone and I did so, but had I not been so lucky I could have effectively lost my entire character.
Why is this important? Well, even though the loss would have been completely my fault it would have been CCP that felt ramifications from it. I love EVE Online and think it's a great game, but not so much that I'm willing to start from scratch. If I had not been so lucky I certainly would have canceled my accounts rather then play from scratch. And I didn't typo when I said accounts. I currently have my main, two alts, my fiancee's account, and my friend's account that is only active because I play. If I had been podded after my mistake CCP would have been out $75 a month all because one play made a stupid mistake.
With that in mind, my suggestion is for the default value of a clone to change along with the increased skill points of the character. The default value should never be 100%, because people shouldn't be able to skip the cloneing process altogether, but it should be high enough to insure that stupid user error doesn't cost CCP clients. My initial thought is the default level should be in the 90% range, but that's just a number I'm pulling out of my rear with no investigation at all.
The simple theory being this. If a player makes a stupid mistake and gets podded without a clone at least that player will maintain enough of the character that he shouldn't feel the mistake a compelling reason to quit the game. On the other hand though the player would still be penalized for their moronic mistake.
Thoughts?

AFAIK you only lose a percentage of your skill points based on the quality of your clone, so you would not be starting from scratch, it would have just knocked your skills a bit off their most recent levels. Open to correction on this..... ---------- Sorry but that link contains nawty language. -wystler "Discussing moderation is not allowed" - Ivan K "Ranting is prohibited" - Teblin

If you are podded without an up to date clone, you don't fully die. You lose a small percentage of your total sp's off your highest skill.

Edited by: Jita Scouter on 14/06/2006 12:14:07 Yup... The way it works is that you will lose either the difference between your sp and the sp covered in the clone contract OR a small percentage of your highest trained skill, Whichever is lowest.
edit: by lowest I am refering to the amount of sp loss. which means that probably your BS lvl 5 would have been knocked back to BS lvl 4 at a certain % complete or so... Thats all.

My understanding was that you lose 5% of the "uninsured" loss i.e. you have a clone good for 30000 SP and you have 1030000 SP then you lose 5% of 1 mill i.e. 50000 SP and that loss comes from your highest ranked skill.
Dr Caymus could lose nearly 3 mill SP

If how you earlier thought the game worked was how it in reality works, I would fully support your proposal. Your idea ended up being unneeded, but you get full points in my book for thinking of what would be a major flaw and acting on it by posting here. Good job sir.
