Edited by: Serenity Steele on 14/06/2006 14:44:59 There is a separate angle to the recent reimbursements to the IPO scam run through the Eve-Online forums, which IMHO needs to be raised.
The unique aspect of an unsharded universe in Eve enables unprecedented levels of Emergent play. To many, the ability to develop new social, economic, political structures is the driving force behind the longevity and enjoyment of Eve.
Emergent play has seen some astounding acts of entrepreurial gaming, enhancing the depth, quality and development of the universe. To name a few since the dawn of Eve: - BIG Lottery - Gambling sites - Adult Entertainment sites - Shared BPO buying schemes - Naga Stepstone project - The Territorial Map - ISS Alliance concept (Neutral, Charter based) - Public Outposts - ISS Marginis IPO - EGSE Stock market
Each idea has spawned copies, scams and whole industries. Some have been incorporated into game play (eg. Alliances, Sovreignty). At the same time, all the other aspects of Eve that are comoditised (Tech I POs/Manufacturing/Trade/Combat/you name it) quickly become boring.
Each idea also had three key things in common: - The successes were brokered on hard earned, broadly recognised trust. - They required inordinate amounts of thinking, planning and effort. - They had scams
The reward for those shown worthly of trust is respect and power (economic, military), and faster development of the Eve universe.
The reward for the scams is building an intelligent, independent thinking community, open to new ideas, but less likely to fall for the next scam. As a side-issue it also means less GMs need to be employed.
By deciding to reimburse the recent IPO scam, GMs devalue trust and players individual responsibility for their own decisions of whom to/not to trust.
If trust and independent judgment of players is moderated, so that every player is on an equal playing field, then it is commoditised. Having lost it's unique value, new ideas will become copiable like a tech I BPO - to the nth degree, making the reward for innovation in Emergent Play too low to be worth the effort.
Please consider carefully if this is the direction CCP with to take the eve universe.

GM's should worry about helping new people, reimburseing for game bugs and sanctioning scams that involve real money. outside of this, no meddling is required.
if this simple principle is not followed, we end up depending on some GM's definition of "what is the right thing to do" in a given situation.

CCP - uv dropped the ball here, uv dropped it, punctured it, burnt it, thrown it in an environmentally protected area and burnt down the rain forests.
Say you won't do it again, please, thanks.

Excellent post Serenity, thanks. And you're right, this only hurts legitimate businesses such as yours.

I wholeheartedly agree. What good is the effort people invest in building a positive reputation when the stupidity inherent in blind trust no longer carries a penalty?
Thing is, restricting your customer base to independent thinkers of some intelligence isn't economically sound...

Agreed.
As long as the transactions were carried using valid game mechanics they should stand. One of Eve's big attractions for me is the trust that can develop between players. It develops best in Eve precisely because of the risk. This is the only MMORPG where I have felt that I would be happy to meet friends socially in real life. That's because the game has shown me more of their character than any other game. -- (Battle hardened miner)

O.P for the win
The EVE I play is for smart people (don't ask how I manage). As far as I am concerned, dumbasses who cry to the nearest authority figure when things dont go their way have no place here.
Scams like the one being debated provide just that filter between players I want to play with, and players I would rather see lining the pockets of Blizzard. --

Very good post, why have we STILL not had any official CCP response to this issue?
CCP can you not see what a colossal mistake you've made? You need to start patching things up NOW, not later.
