Hey folks just thought i would pop in and say hello i am very new to eve (about a day) and so far i am enjoying myself although only onto the batch of tutorials after Aura. I see a lot of people are interested in pvp in this game which is nice and from what i hear this is some of the best and most tense pvp there is in the mmo genre so i would like to get involed at some point when i have become a bit more comfortable with the game as its pretty overwhelming at first for a newbie
What i want to know though is it possible to be able to do a little of everything in this game right from the start or do you really need to pick a direction to go in and stick with it for a while to make some headway? The reason i ask this is that i have very little idea what it is i want to do just now, maybe after i have done all the tutorials i might have some idea but every area looks like it might have some interest to me
Any help and advice would be very much welcome |

Most people I know did a bit of everything when they began playing. It's nice to get a feel for everything to see how it works, then choose to specialize in something from there. Of course, you are prolonging your specialized training by doing that, but you may find something more enjoyable that you didn't even think about doing. When I first started playing, I was excited to do exploration. But after doing tutorials, meeting people, etc, I found combat more interesting (especially since I wanted to do PvP) and started focusing on skills that would help mission running as well as translate to PvP. It wasn't until 6 months later, and primarily after a revamp of the exploration system, that I decided to go explore and found I enjoyed it just as much.
In short, do what you want to do. If you don't like what you're doing, find something else. You don't need to rush into something. Take your time and enjoy a little bit of everything, get a feel for what you want to do. Then focus on that. My twitch stream to help new players: http://www.twitch.tv/biohazrd51

Leave now before you get hooked !
Seriously try a bit of everything first before you even think of specialisation, but don't let it overwhelm you. EvE is great in that there is a lot open to you, and of course over time you can build up lots of specialisations.
As most people will probably tell you, do what you enjoy.

Good question.
In fact, you can do a little of everything from the very start, successfully. Gaining SP in order to specialize is unnecessary, although this sort of thing is rather circumstantial. It depends on where you are, with whom, and what you're trying to do. But overall, it's more beneficial to be a generalist, as a new pilot.
What you'll find is that your main limiter is your understanding of the game. It's quite deep and complex, so this would be the way in which veterans have the biggest advantage over you. But in terms of SP, and doors that are open? Go ahead and just train up whatever seems fun at the time, and try stuff out. Just avoid training stuff to 4 or 5 unless you absolutely need it.

From what little i have done so far i am rather enjoying combat and exploration as they seem quite fun and it would seem like some of the skills there would have some cross-over for keeping my safe if i ever find something haha or looking for players if i decided to go pvp
oddly enough the fact that i can do anything i want is both a huge source of excitment and very overwhelming
still have to do the other tutoria agents so will wait and see i guess

I think a lot of new players find this. What I always suggest to players is give yourself some goals, E.g.
I want to fly a Hurricane.
I'd like to explore wormholes.
I want to shoot slavers.
Set yourself a goal, find out what the path is to get there, plan and have at it ! Limited MM Recruitment is open.

Hello and Welcome :)
I'm ISD Athechu from ISD:STAR and would like to welcome you and glad to see that you are enjoying the game. I just wanted to touch on one thing that you said.
Sethanon Drayke wrote: What i want to know though is it possible to be able to do a little of everything in this game right from the start or do you really need to pick a direction to go in and stick with it for a while to make some headway?
Absolutely you can go any which way that you want to go. The only limits really of EVE is what you decide they are. Of course there are the traditional paths such as Industry/PVP(Combat)/PVE/Mining/Courier but of course there are other paths that you can choose or make up yourself. A lot of people do the "shot gun" effect and try everything for a little bit until they find something that they enjoy. So you don't have to focus on one thing if you try something and don't like it well then switch it up. It's one of the great things about EVE.
Again I welcome you and if you got any questions feel free to mail me in-game :)

As suggested, try a bit of everything and find what you enjoy.
However, don't feel like you have to understand everything about everything immediately. Do a bit of mining today. Tomorrow try out some exploration. The next day run a few security missions. Take your time. Eve is a massive game and trying to learn it all in one go is overwhelming (impossible). Veteran players still learn something new every day. It's part of what makes it such a fun, lasting game.
And do ALL the career missions. They will introduce you to all the basics, which are important to understand, even if you aren't planning on going "that route". www.ensignyooch.wordpress.com

Thanks for all the fast and very helpful advice i am a former wow player (i know, i know) and if i tried posting something like this on a wow forum it would decent into a flame-war or god knows what in seconds.
On another note what the view on joining corps early should i be looking already or is it better to just stick to lurking in the newbie corp and chat, from what little i have seen lurking around here a little it seems that a massive part of this game is the actual people you play it with and that playing solo is less desirable
I have a lot of questions and likely more as people post responses and mention things i hadn't thought of |

You'll find other sections of the forum less welcoming. But in general the EVE community is fairly helpful to new players (it's not uncommon for a pirate to refund your ship and give you some tips if they see you are very new).
In my opinion, start looking for a corp as soon as you have developed some goals and interests. That way you can look for a corp that supports the play-style you are interested in. This doesn't mean you need to have a whole year of skills planned out - just some direction. Some people coming knowing day 1 that they want to be a pirate, or a miner, others have to try out a host of activities before they find their true calling. Some never find it and just continue to do everything (Me )
Here is an excellent guide on finding the right corporation for you. You are correct that a major aspect of this game is player interaction. Sometimes it takes a few tries to find the right corp, so don't get discouraged. You'll know you've found it when you join a group that makes an effort to include you in activities you enjoy from day 1. If not, keep looking. Good luck! www.ensignyooch.wordpress.com

"How did you veterans start?" In the thread linked above there are quite a few stories from veterans about how they started. You might glean some information that will be useful for your journey through EVE. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.

EVE doesn't have classes, thus you can do everything if you really want to.
BUT.
Specializing is key. This means you are on par with the older characters more quickly then when you do a little bit of everything. *Jack of all trades, master of none*
This doesn't mean that from the word GO, you have to specialize in 1 thing. It's perfectly fine to try different things out till you find out what you really like and then specialize into that field of expertise (You can't say that you like or dislike something without even tried it).
As an example with made up numbers:
Mining - 1 year of skills Missions - 1.5 years of skills PvP - 2 years of skills Trading - 0.5 years of skills
Now, if you want to be on par with all of them, you will be skilling for 4,5 years. Where as if you pick a specialty, it will take you at most 2 years (for PvP) to be at the same level and you can always train another thing when you reach a point in your "specialty" where you are happy with how you are. During the course of my first year I did nearly everything. Flew in all types of space in ships from every race, data sites, null pvp, lived in a worm hole, tried a suicide gank...
I was largely unsuccessful at all of it but from a learning standpoint I was highly successful. I figired out what I liked and made a lot of great contacts from all over the game.
My suggestuon is to just do what you want. Don't measure your success against your kill board or wallet amd its easy to win eve every day. |
