I was looking at mining and read posts how at first you are better off selling the ore rather than refining it due to refining skill.
My question is, at what refining skill level can you make more by refining the ore than selling the ore outright?
My understanding is that the station you refine from takes a cut but some are better than others. Are there any good stations in Caldari space that do not take a large cut of what you refine?

The sell the ore rather then refine it is usualy BS and wrong. There are exeptions, but assuming your willing to do the math and haul the minerals you will make much more by refining and selling. After all they wouldnt be buying the ore if they couldnt make a noticable profit.
So as to your question? Level 1 works just fine. Higher is better though. :) Other factors such as picking a 50% vrs a 30% station are much more important. Dont forget high standing to reduce taxes. Also performing 1 big refine is more effecient then 1000 little refines.
In the end, DO the Math and figure out which option is better for your situation. It can very greatly from system to system.

This ore calculator will let you calculate the value of your minerals versus your ore. It includes your skills and standing. The odds are pretty good that unless you have high refining skills you will do better selling the ore, but not always.

Thanks for the info! I now have a few more questions based on this.
Is 50% the best yield at a station?
How can you tell which yield a station has other than docking and opening the reprocess screen?
How do you determine the base percentage of the amount the station will take? I notice that it is not the tax rate but some other rate.

50% is the best base refining efficiency. All the stations that you're likely to working in are 50%. The refining fee is based on your standing in that station, which is a 12 digit number. I don't know how they arrive at it.

You can only see the station's equipment rate in the refining interface. :( 5% is the base amount that a station will take as their cut. it is reduced by your standing with the corporation that owns the station.

You can eliminate nearly all, or even all wastage by training Refining to 5, Refining Efficiency 4, and the ore-specific 'Processing' skill to 2 or 3.
You can raise your standing by doing missions for agents that belong to the corp that owns the station you're refining in. I think if you get a 6.0 corp standing, they don't charge you anything.

The profit they make comes from having a good level in Refining and a good standing towards the corporation owning the station they refine in.
I noticed with a corporation standing of 8.3 (so no refining taxes) and Refining 1 I can barely get as much from selling the minerals as I can get from selling the raw ore. Considering I would need to haul the ore to "my" refining station first if I wanted to do the refining, selling the raw ore is usually more attractive.

It's closer to 6.7+. Connections and other standing increasing skills count here.

I believe it is refining V, refinery efficiency III, and ore specific II for everything up to hemophrite. An industrial, roleplaying corporation, currently recruiting -----------------------------------------------
