Hi.
Just want to say hi to the community. I just started yesterday.
I downloaded the game a few times over the years since 2009. But every time I joined I couldn't get into the game even though I want to.
Now that I'm older and smarter and more patient, I'm interested and ready to play.

Welcome! o/
Trying the game on and off for a few years is pretty common. Hopefully this time around you'll get hooked! Pester us all you like, most people in EVE are quite nice and helpful, even if they are trying to kill you.
Just a few tips I like to give to help retain you this time around.
- Eve is a social game. Doing certain things in the game might seem repetitive and boring, but throw a few friends into the mix and it can get quite fun. Check around for the right corporation or organization that best suits what you want to do in the game. Even if that means going through 4 or 5 before you find the right one.
- Make sure to read through all the tutorials (if you haven't done them already). The include a lot of basic information that is taken for granted in other MMOs, but Eve isn't like other MMOs.
- Most of all, Eve is what you make of it. Once completing the tutorials, it is quite easy to feel lost, unguided, or completely overwhelmed. Don't ask yourself "what am I supposed to do?", ask "what do I want to do?"

Lol my problem in the past was that the game was too confusing. Spent hours just trying to figure out how to leave the station. So I left. I never went passed the tutorials |

Welcome aboard
The tutorials are a fair bit better than they used to be. There's plenty of out of game information to help you along the way, I'd recommend Eve Uni's wiki as a good place to start if you get stuck.
If you have questions then this forum is the place to post them, in NCQA we're pretty welcoming and helpful to newbies, and the mods are swift to act upon bad advice and trolls*

How to win EVE: 1. Do the tutorials, and take the time to actually read, understand, and remember all the boring info they give you. 2. Join an active corp and make friends. [there are many corps open to rookies, including EVE University, Brave Noobies Inc.] 3. Have fun, whether you win or lose.
Generally people that quit EVE, do so because they try to play it like other games. EVE really only has player generated content, so if you aren't creating content, or looking for content (it is easier to find with more friends too), you will quickly get bored.
I'm one of the rare cases that can derive enjoyment from the most mundane things, so I manage to be solo, but it does get "old" at times. Do find some friends for maximum enjoyment of EVE!
EVE is more about the people than about spaceships. |

I dont understand how EVE University works. They said they require a 8.0 standing. Which looks like it takes alot of time to get. So..... I only got like a 2.0 so far. So much for letting new guys join. |

Welcome back to Eve. In my own experience, the best way to find what's special about Eve is to head to null-sec. Join a corp in a battle-tested alliance, and you'll start to get a sense of what keeps so many veterans interested. Fights have underlying meaning, goals are real, and non-arbitrary, and the bonds between corpmates gets stronger. Missions and high-sec, by contrast, is quite boring and bereft of meaning. But that's just my opinion. ;)

Missions are indeed boring and bereft of meaning, but there's plenty more to do in highsec than just PVE. I prefer highsec for the ability to hunt prey at times of my choosing, unlike having to defend structures at weird and wonderful hours of the day.

My two cents, the key I found to EvE was joining up with a group. There are plenty of groups out there that cater to new players. Dont try and start one on your own unless you REALLY want to suffer through things. Instead, join some more established pilots that will show you the ropes. EvE is one of the most rewarding games I have played, but you really need to play it with others to get the full experience in my view. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=266074 - Sniggwaffe (Waffles)

Welcome (back) to Eve!
The most valuable advice I can give you is to echo what others are saying in reference to this being a very social game. Finding a good group of players to work with is, for most people, the key to really enjoying the game and getting darn good at it.
However, this is a double edged sword. Joining a player run corporation should be something you put a LOT of thought into, and something that you take quite slowly. Remember - it's trivial to start up a corp and proclaim yourself a CEO and start hunting for members.
It's quite easy to end up in a very badly run player corp full of people who are going to give you awful advice, awful ideas, and in general make EVE much harder for you.
If they don't ask for a full API and want to at least interview you first and talk to you, i'd stay very far away. Ask questions before you join - questions such as "Are there players online in my time zone", "I want to do X, Y, and Z - do we have players who are experts at these things and willing to teach me?", "How does your corp handle the threat of war-decs?", etc. Get to know them before you even consider joining. Look them up on public killboards, look up their members on eve-who and consider talking to some of the rank and file before you even considering joining.
There should be a entire hour long tutorial section on taking joining a corp as very serious business, but there are not. Don't learn this the hard way. It only takes one bad decision to end up with a group that at best is going to slow down your progress and fill your head with misinformation, or at worst going to leave you with a rather permanent stain on your history.
In the meantime, just be patient. Run the tutorials. All of them. Get great standing with a few NPC factions (pick one that has jump-clone services, you will be very happy you took the time to do this later). Grinding missions is the worst, but getting that nice 8.0 standing with a good NPC corp is something you only need to do once, and it's well worth your time.
Fit up a bunch of trashy t1 throw away frigates and go roam low sec and find creative ways to explode. Learn from those experiences.
Good luck! |
