In short after 7-8 years of on and off Eve, forum trolling, and bittervet syndrome, I've decided to clear shop and uninstall for the last time when my plex runs out in 11 days.
So instead of a whiny I quit thread and explaining why, I decided I wanted to see what things others would want done to make Eve a better, more fun, and immersive game. Or new ideas to make that possible.
What do you think could be changed/added to keep older players active, or bring them back?
What do you think could be changed/added to keep more new players?
These can be major things or minor things, your idea can focus on either new or old or possibly both it doesn't matter.
Well thought out ideas will receive ISK, trolls will receive nothing(unless you're clever).
Want my stuff? Post an idea.

Profession tutorials. New player looks at a list, selects Explorer. He then has access to skills needed, common ships used with approved, by the player base, fits. Gets access to profession specific guides and perhaps a link to a chat channel where 'Explorer' vets will help the newbs of their chosen profession.
This idea could of course be expanded upon to include charting outlining risk vs. reward, maybe some fictional 'a day in the life' stories, or whatever.

Doubtful, this isn't the first time I've quit and everytime I do come back I find no will to play. Last time I quit I gave away around ~30b to corpmates/friends, all of which have stopped playing now.
While I won't go as far as biomassing, removing liquid assets would deter me from randomly plexing only to troll forums. Which I'm sure the ISD and CCP will be grateful for. CCP's Motto: If it isn't broken, break it. If it is broken, ignore it. Improving NPE-á/ Dynamic New Eden |

To keep new players in longer:
Less reliance on 3rd party sites and software. CCP could do a lot better in training people up, providing details. Don't get me wrong: I love what the community builds etc., but it feels strange for many new players that they need to go outside of the game for so many things. Dotlan, StaticMapper, Uni, etc. Additionally, one could think of more robust Sov Mapping in client. For a new player Eve is extremely daunting: NPE can always be better, I ran through it when I rejoined eve 2 months ago after being gone for a few years. Very basic mechanics are there, and yes, you get scrammed and such, but it's still nothing to do with RL EvE
The client should come with several overview presets: PvE, PvP, Mining, Explo, All, basic.
For myself, I feel that the EVE system is relying on meta too much these days. Awox, Safari, AFKCloakers in large swathes of space: all viable tactics of course, but they're kind of gamey ASFAIC. Full API's, no one ever talking to each other cause TeH SpieZ! Looking into this from the outside, as a newbie carebear just trying not to get a shiny new vexor popped in a Lvl2 Sec mission, it seems like sooo much hassle to ever be fun.
As ZP once put it: EVE feels like paying someone for a second job. Getting to the 'good' stuff requires a hell of a lot of planning and mechanics and 'stuff'. Not really any frontier space exploration. Just setting up shop somewhere etc.
For older players: I would personally love mobile stations. Say a capital ship people can dock in, provides services etc. That's slightly less blob attracting than the average titan. Random PvE encounters. More exploration content. I love Exploration. Seems that all the WSpace has been claimed though I believe. |

My subscription runs out next month so i'll be quitting / taking a break too. I would probably start playing and enjoying the game if CCP did the following:
* Improve the UI - Everything from the overview to the tactical overlay needs modernizing and improving
* New content for wormhole space - Wormhole space needs new features to reinvigorate wormhole PVP and new, more challenging pve content (maybe a C7 wormhole with sleeper capitals)
* Avatar based gameplay - I want to physically explore things like relic and data sites with my character
* Fix local in dangerous space - Delay it, remove , make it disruptable, whatever. +1 |

My idea:
Nothing. Don't try. Reason being, the older players burn themselves out, rather than the game doing so. Everyone gets tired of their hobbies eventually; why should EVE be any different? Pandering to veterans is just going to draw focus away from the main game, whilst continually releasing new stuff would draw away resources needed for excellent initiatives such as tiericide.
The veterans have had their time and made their investment in the game. We're all told, day-in day-out to make our own emergent content. When it's their time to go, there's no point trying to keep them on life support. Sounds callous, but to act otherwise would cheapen the game experience for everyone. Dodixie > Hek |

Help for new players? Merge the mastery tab and trait tab on ships, and remove the characteristic pretty pictures.
Hey new player, what does this ship do? Here are the bonuses, and here are the skills that would make it easier to fly (not just requirements).
And Auar stole my other idea about specific help chats for professions. There really should be something that pops up at the end of each tutorial that directs the new player to find and join a channel "made and designed for people like you" or some such thing.
I don't know how many people I've helped in trying to simply find their first agent or fit that first destroyer that were just spamming in Scopechat because they had no idea where else to turn. |

1. 30 second or 60 second proximity data with killmails. This is a capture of everything that's happening on grid 30-60 seconds prior to the killmail being generated. This would let us do instant replays (like in football) from various angles and with all kinds of data (weapons used, ranges, etc.) to learn from the KMs (more than just what fittings the victim had)
2. Ability to share notebooks (where you take notes) between alts.
3. Better API for market data outside of EVE. Eve-central is too lagged and frequently unreliable for low/0.0.

Dynamic sec status. Similar to the idea in your signature, but with a simpler implementation. More rats killed in a system leads to a higher sec status, meaning less desirable rats. Low activity in a system leads to lower sec status, and thus better rats. Suddenly, those unused nullsec systems are very valuable, and instead of empty constellations, people are encouraged to spread out and use that unused space. |

Fair enough. Well if you really want to get rid if your stuff, I find that giving away small gifts in rookie systems and offering some advice can be quite rewarding. Ideas to keep people playing:
Remove the logoff button. Set the TTL on network packets to OVER 9000! (days) Put superglue on people's keyboards. Raise the minimum wage to $30/hr Give every new sub a free Titan. Integrate Youtube to the captain's quarters. Open "the door". Add down-voting to the forums. Re-elect The Mittani to CSM. Fix POS code. Remove the blue donut. Reduce power projection. Reduce PLEX prices. Fix wardec hopping. Add peace declarations. Add real world physics to all the things. Rewrite the entire game so it works betterer - Twice, just in case.
I find that without a good mob to provide one for them, most people would have no mentality at all. |

Nothing, as they path they are on seems to be the correct one. Industry is being fixed, then they will tackle corp and alliances stuff, then pos' then sov. then expand.
How long will that take? hades if I know. But a lot of the improvements that have already been making, make me feel, personally, feel better about eve. About the only two things I would add is system wide asteroid belts/ring mining which would make sense to come in a pos revamp, and comet mining.
As you can tell i'm a miner at heart.
Other stuff will come, but i'm on the 'they need to fix what is broken before they add more broken to the game' boat. If they get around to making PI less of a click fest and more enjoyable then I will cheer for that as well.
But we will see. And i'll gladly take some of your stuff 10 years of eve... yea i'm an addict |

To bring players back:
Asset concentration. Every time I resubbed, I found all my assets scattered across hundreds of star systems, and the mere logistical nightmare to haul at least a part of it to one place was always a factor that kept me away. When I resub, I want to jump in to the game straight away and have fun, instead of having to do chores for several days first.
Now wouldn't it be awfully nice if, like the respec button, CCP allowed us to magically get all of our assets to one place about once a year?
I am kind of sad to see you go, yet I am positive that you will be back eventually, so don't give away too much stuff or you will regret it. I'm just going to walk the Earth. You know, like Caine in Kung Fu: walk from place to place, meet people, get into adventures and die of autoerotic asphyxation in a sleazy Thai hotel room. |

Can I post another idea?
I feel that the role of leadership has been somewhat lacking recently. Why not have a system of proximity for leadership modules? Command ships have a radius on grid in which warfare links apply. You could then introduce another T2 destroyer which acts to "extend" the field by having its own radius which projects the same warfare link bonuses but ONLY when the command ship's links are running. IDK seems fun. Dodixie > Hek |

One great way to keep me more active would be to give me your stuff. But in case that doesn't work.
Quote:What do you think could be changed/added to keep older players active, or bring them back?
To be honest, a great deal of when I have seen people quit EVE is due to real life commitments taking precedent. There is not a great deal of things to be done about that, the game already lets you pay for your sub with isk and the skill system is about as casual friendly as possible.
Quote:What do you think could be changed/added to keep more new players?
Now this is always an interesting discussion. EVE is not for everyone. It's a niche, and changing it to make it more mainstream runs the risk of alienating the people who came for the niche in the first place. So I'm not going to say anything trite or self serving like "more PvE/PvP/WiS/whatever my favorite content is!".
Instead, I will discuss two things. Expectations and player outreach. They are closely tied together, so forgive me if my thoughts run into one another.
Much of the "problems" with EVE can be laid at the feet of misplaced expectations. EVE isn't hard, not like the internet at large wants to claim it is. EVE is not "griefer's paradise", as is the prevailing opinion either.
The problem comes when people expect EVE to have the same rules as everything else does, for their behavior to translate from other games into EVE. And that simply doesn't happen, because EVE is different. Now, when taking this into account, it must also be pointed out that it is not EVE's fault that other games follow the same formula of banality. There is a section of the internet that hungers for difficulty, that wants old school, unforgiving games. But they don't play EVE either. The trick is reaching the audience that would enjoy EVE, not making EVE fit to the audience that already doesn't like it.
CCP, as a general rule, SUCKS at PR. One way they have gotten it right however is in the Buddy Program, which provides an incentive to add new accounts to the game. This is an example of the kind of player outreach that is needed to grow the game. But the kind of PR to make player outreach successful can't just come from CCP, it has to come from us. We need to proselytize EVE, we need to stand up and shout down the negativity that pervades the prevailing opinion about the game, we need to change minds and encourage more new players.
"But Kaarous, most of the player outreach in the game is solely the province of the players anyway!"
Yep, it is. Things like EVE Uni, RvB, and Brave Newbies have done to KEEP new players than any official resource or game mechanic has. And that's why CCP has to have a part in this too. They've actually done a lot, in recent years, and I have to give them that. The T1 ship rebalance has done wonders for the viability of low skillpoint characters in many aspects of the game, the new and accessibly low grade pirate implants help a lot, and the Crius industry rebalance will help even more. Iterative improvements in the basic game itself is one of THE most important things in regard to selling the game to new players. (Please note, this includes ship remodeling also, as those efforts have paid off big in my opinion)
But does it stop there? Right now, to me, it really seems like it does. And that's what I'd change. Open up new player resources like fixing and modernizing the EVE wiki (instead of wasting time with tooltips, just saying), start incentivizing content creation and EVE journalism, and add new, challenging and impactful things within reach of a new player. (an excellent example of this is the Angel Epic Arc, which is without doubt the best designed piece of content in the game)
TL;DR: Encourage the community to market the game to the kind of players who are inclined to like it, shake things up with more unannounced Live Events (drop a Revenant on after downtime, watch the scramble), and work towards impactful choices for new players. "Verily, I have often laughed at the weaklings who thought themselves good because they had no claws."

Crew and Support Staff:
Crew slots added to all ships.. purchasable crew that are able to provide slight bonuses to things like alignment time, tracking speed, max velocity, thing like that.
Support Staff added as a part of the industry and PI process. Same sort of deal, bonuses to the process for each staff type. Finally a reason for exotic dancers, janitors, etc.
The support staff sounds a bit like what they are doing with the next update, but it could go much further. Temperate planets can have a PI-type interaction that gathers crew/staff and then they can be sold on the open market, traded as a commodity, etc.

There is no one thing that will keep new players in the game. The kinds of people who play this game are a varied bunch, and we don't all want the same thing.

I think it would be cool if we had full integration of Dust and soon Valkyrie into EVE.
I'd like to be able to dock my ship, get my character into battlegear, grab a gun and go find some troube - or cause it somewhere.
Or what about a boarding crew? After shields are down we dock with our boarding vessel on top of a hatch on that Supercarrier, hack it open and board the ship. Inside we need to overcome automated defenses, perhaps some sentinels which are controlled by the pilot, hack a door or two until we get to the main engine / weapon control / ship computer etc. and do some sabotage. Perhaps we can even take control from the pilot that way.
Maybe we can find the main hangar inside that supercarrier, board some Fighter-Bombers, hot-wire them and launch those babies to unleash their fury against our enemies.
Maybe some covops, too? What about approaching that POS in a cloaked ship... once in position we use a zero-g suit to get into the POS without triggering the alarms. Inside we try to get to the labs without drawing too much attention. Sneaky business. We need to stay in the dark. Maybe use a knife or a garotte to remove some obstacles - sure, they're lowtech, but the scanners won't notice them and they'll help to get past those guards in utter silence.
Such an integration would bring a plethora of possibilities. |
