I am currently in a frigate to do my mining. But I was wondering, when is a good time to upgrade to the next ship, and what would that be?
destroyer? cruiser? barge?
What should I be focusing in on? Also my race is Gallente so I was wondering racial wise too what would be best.
Thanks for the help

Hi Hyd.
The destroyer class of ships tends to be the next logical progression from the Frigate. Some people who have the money skip this step and go straight to the cruiser.
The mining barge class tends to come a bit later in the game due to the higher skill requirements.
I hope that helps!

could you recommend a good mining destroyer?

Since you are Gallente I assume you have trained for Gallente ships, therefore you can only really use the gallente destroyer, which is actually kinda nice.

There is currently only one destroyer for each race in the game. The Gallente one is the Catalyst which as has been pointed out is considered quite good for mining.
Again, I hope that helps.

If you have Gallente Frigate trained to a reasonable level the navitas will be a better option, assuming you don't need to kill or minimally tank.
The Navitas can easily outmine a catalyst, due to it's 20% mining yield bonus per level. If you started with Frigate IV use a navitas for now.

Agreed, the navitas is probably the most sensible option right now. After that two options, as I see it, either go for a mining barge or max your drone skills and use a vexor. The problem with the vexor is that at almost max drone skills and almost max mining skills both the mining (with miner II) and the mining drones (with mining drones II) cicles will give you an almost full cargo, so you'll have to be prepared and be fast while jet can mining.
So, if you want to learn fast how to mine better the barge represents less skills to learn. if you want to fight a bit the vexor + drones is a sensible, but lenghty, option, as both mining drones 5 and drone interfacing 5 are "needed" for nice drone bonuses (mining drones 5 let's you use mining drones II and drone interfacing 5 increases mining bonus from 80% to 100%).
In fact, having both options open to me (damn me and my jack-of-all-tradeing ) , I use the barge when I want to mine, it's less stressful.
As an afterthough, you could also consider other mining ships like the caldari's osprey (a cruiser).

Actually you are not factoring in the fact that the Vex gets a bonus to mining drones as well, for massive belt stripping action.
In fact I did the numbers once and it can outmine a retriever, under ideal contiions of course. Mind you you are moveing ore every 30 seconds which can get old...
(Can mine in a dominic and a retriver too btw )
