I am currently Level 3 in Analytical Mind, Learning and instant recall. I was wondering if I should bring these up to lvl 4 to help with other skills, bring up Iron will and spatial awarness to 4 and stop there for now and work on my other skills before I go to 5, or should I just get to lvl 5 first?

The trick is not to let learningskills interfere with learning new things and having fun. the second you are hesitant to log in because you can't get that new module/skill because you 'have' to do the learningskills first. That's when you stop learning them.
lvl 3 is ok, getting them all to lvl 5 and then get the tier 2 things to lvl 3 takes a few weeks, if you can sit still twiddling your thumbs that long, go for it. If you want to try out new stuff and play around a bit, don't.

You have to decide.
It's a classic question of instant gratification vs long range payoff. What kind of guy are you?
Those are not very high learning skill levels you have. So everything else that isn't learning that you train now will take a little longer to train than it would if you waited and trained higher learnings first. And six months from now you'll have less skill points than somebody else who just does learning now.
But maybe you have specific things you really want to train right now so you can do something now. So, you have to decide if doing what you want to do sooner is worth taking longer to get to the same point in the long run. Everybody needs to work out his own balance on this.
Anybody gives you a rule like train learning when offline and other stuff online just means he needed to give himself some kind of rule to make sure he kept a balance between right now and long term. You could use about any rule you wanted. But keep some balance or you'll never get around to training the learning and that would be a problem in the long run.

Well let me ask this (newbie too):
Training the five learning skills to 5 (not including charisma) is going to take me 5 weeks total... how much time do they shave off? Around 10-15 minutes on rank 1 abilities?
It seems like its going to take an awful long time until you've saved enough time to make them worth it. Or am I wrong?
I suppose it depends if you think you'll be around for the longterm or not...

They shave off about 20-30% I believe, assuming you train up the advanced learning skills to level 3, 4 rather. The 20day skill you had without any learning skills will take about 9days in the end with learning skills done, depending on your attributes.
I'm sure Tripoli could give a more accurate answer on that
Whatever the answer is, they are surely worth it if you intend to plan on playing longer than a few months.

Level one and rank one abilities are not what you want to look at. If you stick around very long at all you are going to want to get a number of skills to higher levels, certain key skills to level 5 will be very important in a few months, and they wont all be rank one. Some have ranks like five or six or eight...then you'll wish you had these learning skills because they will make a big difference.
Short term pain, long term gain.
Instead of blindly training all though, if you know you are going in a certain direction look at the attributes used for the skills you want to train. Someone going toward research might want to hurry up on intelligence and memory learning skills for example, and leave the others for later. If you see a lot of gunnery in your near term future, well...maybe you worry about perception and willpower related learning first.
Its your call.

as a returning player with a new character I've pushed all my learning skills to 4 asap. Because of my work pattern I often have to go 18 hours or so without logging into Eve, so I set the level 5 learning skills to train then, then focus on other stuff when I get in for a decent session.

The trick is to train them when you don't really need other skills trained.
Start by training them to level 2-3, toss on level 4 when you have a chance, and when you're a month or two into the game, start training the level 5s and the advanced learning skills, one at a time. Don't try to do it all at once.

Just my 2c worth, I dont profess to be some expert, I aint, only 3 months old, and while I am really enjoying the game, I regret not doing the learning thing first, I am busy with it now :p But it is a bit of a pain now because I am in that situation where I am waiting for skills to finish ! Mainly the advanced learning skills.
But I do also agree, dont let the learning get in the way of the game, I am at the level of BS now with torps / cruise launchers, and some medium T2 stuff, and I am getting by. But as said, dont let learning skills get in the way of enjoying the game.

in the 20 - 25 days you trained all learning skills up to level5 you can run mission, trade stuff... and im pretty sure that you can get 4.5 mill for one of the advanced learning skills doing that in the meanwhile.

Exactly. I see no real reason to take the time to go to lvl 5 on the learning skills until you can afford to buy the advanced and train them to 2 or 3.
I know ISK are easy to come by, although for the life of me I can't seem to figure it out.

Wow, a learning skills thread that doesn't promt my usual rant.
The important question to answer is,"are you having fun doing whatever your doing now, and will you still be having fun at it 6 or so weeks from now when you finish level 5 on the learning skils?"
If you answer is, "I'm parked in a station while the learners are going," I'll have to invoke the rant.
A previous reply said to not let the learning skills get in the way of the game, and that's the best advice there is to give about them.

Just like to add a couple things.
For me the best way to do learning skills is while I'm sleeping or unable to play for a bit. So before I go to work or to bed, I set up a learning skill to train. While I'm playing the game, I train skills that only take up to a few hours. Although I'm sure after I play for a little longer most skills will take longer than that, for a new player like me it seems to work fine.
As for getting some isk together, my suggestion would be to outfit a tier 3 frigate from whichever race you are, and try and find a decently safe 0.4 region and kill some rats. At least for me I'm able to kill 60-70k isk bounties with a frigate that didnt cost too much to put together, and I don't have tons of skills. I don't know if you're Gallente or not, but here's what I use for the bigger 0.4 rats, and it takes them down easily:
Ship: Tristan
Hi Slots: Malkuth Rocket Launcher x2 with Phalanx Rockets Anode Light Electron Particle Cannon x2 with antimatter
Mid Slots: Cold-Gas Arcjet Booster Warp Disruptor (you wont need this, i have it in case PVP happens) Stasis Webifier
Low Slots: 200MM nano plate Armor Rep Magnetic Stablizer
A lot of my stuff is named, but you can do it without. Just web the big guys, orbit them as close as you can, and they can hardly hit you at all.
Anyway, I'll shut up now. ------------------------------------------ I refuse to use a sig until my avatar is up.
Wait, this is a sig.... |
