I would just like to limit my download when the launcher is running, where I work I'm limited to 6mb up on this network which doesn't use a lot of bandwidth - low level users.
Anyway I wanted to update my eve client here today and actually opened the launcher and set the download speed to 1,000 kb - however it still hits it at the max amount of bandwidth available.
I'm not familiar with how this works but, I think it just doesn't.
I did not restart my computer or anything like that when i made the settings change. I just closed the launcher and then reopened it.
Regardless - no change in download speed with or without using the throttle. It's all wide open the whole time.
Is it just broken or is there something else that needs to be setup to make this work? |

Never tried it. But also not sure if you mean you have a 6 Mbit connection or 6 MByte connection. As limiting to 1000KB/s is still faster than your 6 MBit connection...
tbh though, I'm not even sure the limit feature works at all...

the limit feature does work (I use it at home to make sure I don't eat more than half the available bandwidth, yes my internet sucks) you just have to know what you're speed setting needs to be in kb/s. |

If you want to download at 1 megabit/sec you have to set your launcher to 125 kilobytes/sec. No, this isn't it at all. Make it more... psssshhhh. |

Regardless of throttling working or not isn't it better to suck patch up as fast as you can and be done with it? I am not my skills but... http://eveboard.com/pilot/Schmata_Bastanold |

If all you're doing is staring at the progress bar, sure. But for those occasional huge 1 GB+ patches I can see limiting the bandwidth so you can do other things internet-wise while the download is running in the background. |

Well, I am lucky enough to have stable 120/10 Mb connection so I tend to not pay any attention to size of my downloads. And it's a frakking Poland here, 3rd world country on some people's maps :) But I guess even if launcher would choke my net completely I would prefer to go for a smoke or play with my cats than trying to juggle bandwidth and have crippled both browsing and patching.
Anyway, as James wrote OP probably set limit in wrong units, that's all. I am not my skills but... http://eveboard.com/pilot/Schmata_Bastanold |

Exactly, math blah. :) I've got it now and thanks to all of you. I set it double what james suggested and we are good to go, and they're still streaming world cup with no problems.

This is my normal behaviour, this time however just trying to keep the people up front happy with their sporting event, eve is by far more important. Unless the boss is here and then I have no idea what eve is. |

Funny story - The neighbor / coworker / homie that is also in a Eve corp with me had to fix some software for someone somewhere - They added this feature to the platform they were using to CRM with that sent files to places. However they could never get it to work (there's throttling in this story I swear) so he goes to the forum and finds out that it works fine in Linux but for some reason they could never get it to work in Windows.
The excuse given was that their algorithm wasn't working right to initiate the upload. Right.
Corp mate starts digging around and finds that there "algorithm" was actually a wget call (with a stupid number set for throttling that completely swamped their network and killed all activity in the office for upwards of two hours.) The reason the algorithm wouldn't work in windows is because it's not linux. He ended up finding a wget windows alternative and changed it and it worked fine after that.
I was just making sure that hopefully they weren't using that method of algorithm-ing that this other company did :) |

They should use a batch file that starts default system web browser and opens html file which executes javascript that sends files to destination. I suspect that would have better chance to work on both platforms than wget. Because who uses simple sockets anymore :) I am not my skills but... http://eveboard.com/pilot/Schmata_Bastanold |
