Are there Mines in the game which you can deploy or use in combat to blow up another? Not a bomb but a Mine with X radius to blow up if anything gets near it within a given time? If not are there any plans that anyone knows of, because as strategic this game is I feel I am missing something or CCP has a good reason for taking them away? |

As above,
Yes there are mines in the game. No, they don't work anymore becasue they got taken out.
The closest you can come to a "mine" is using a smartbomb. Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

On topic link to a thread on mines from 2006. Posts 7, 9 and 10 are especially a good explanation as to why it might not be a good idea to bring them back into the game. ISD Ezwal Captain Community Communication Liaisons (CCLs) Interstellar Services Department |

Aside from that, they're also very lag inducing.
AOE effects are bad, as they have to, each cycle, check to see if anything is within activation range. That's not a big piece of math, but it stacks up very quickly.
Drop 10 mines on grid, and each of them will need to check if the other 9 are in range. (or if the other things are the right type to trigger them.) In a big fight, they get really painful. Woo! CSM 9! http://fuzzwork.enterprises/ Twitter: @fuzzysteve on Twitter |

But now that you mention it...
Why don't they just rework them to be like smart bombs?

Yes I can see there flaws in the past. But this is 2014 not 2004 our technology is better, along with the abilities to add limits such as setting a limite to how many can be deployed at one time, there decay time meaning how long they last before they disappear without being triggered to explode. I can understand why they were removed and why they probably wont come back to life, however that doesn't mean I wouldn't still like to see them back in the game. |

Too bad that it's still the 2004 game, and thus with underlying 10 year old code.
Ooh and there are plenty of things I would love to see brought (back) into the game. Mainly, the actual hard mode. Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

You act as though there haven't been expansions which add new things all the time. I am just really wanting them as for a strategic point of view. I could be mining and have a couple mines now protecting me or my asteroid field. I'm not saying give us the old mines back, rather than invent a new mines within the game that applies to EVE 2014. |

I say let people do things to get themselves Concorded when they least expect it. :) If I saw deployed mines in hi sec I'd be perfectly willing to get my ship (a Velator for instance) destroyed for the resulting fun.

Yes make people more aware of using them. I like the idea of mines being a double edge sword. |

No mines they were stupid even when they worked right. It would be even worse with the amount of mines the average bitter vet could afford. The one amusing thing with mines was that people would put mines somewhere then head to HS, and get concorded when you flew into them.... Mines would rock actually. You could balance them somewhat like bombs, large cargo space, low launcher count and a slow reload speed. Build a specialized ship like a mine layer which will be limited in cargo and speed. Also like bombs if one goes off it can detonate another one. Also restricting them to low sec would be nice and if you are off grid they deactivate. Of course they would have to be hard to detect as well. |

You could use them like a launched missile that tracks and has limited engagement range. Rather than float in space they could be magnetizied when fired from a launcher, resulting in smart bomb explosions when they clamp onto a target.
Imagine Stealth bombers runs equipped with them..... |
