Hey there. I'm a little miner, working in a little corporation based around a little moon with a little asteroid belt... One big, happy family! Now, we intend on expanding, and I'm investing in a freighter for courier jobs. Now, I've got a few questions 'bout this job and the choice of freighters.
1) I've narrowed my choice of Freighters on two ships: Obelisk and Charon. Which one should I invest in? 2) How much money can one generate as a courier? 3) Is it worth the risk to accept low-sec / nullsec runs for big ISK? Aegroto dum anima est, spes est. |

Couriers are quite nice and can be ok passive fun, but also you run the risk of getting ganked so beware of those high-collateral ones unless you are willing to risk it (or run several decoys for the fun of it).

Never take a freighter into lowsec (let alone null or wormholes) unless you have taken extreme precautions. I would not take a freighter into low unless I was dualboxing an in-corp character piloting a Daredevil that can serve as both a scout and an insta-web-warper, and ideally I'd want a third character scouting one jump ahead.
In highsec - there have been a lot more freighter ganks lately too.
Train Contracting 4 (~26 hours of training), and I would then advise you to let others do all of your hauling. Underpay those useful idiots, let them take all the risks needed to make you rich. Look up my in-game contract history if you want ideas as to what to charge (it's a LOT less than you think). https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=346564 - a proposal to overhaul the Logistics skill https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. www.minerbumping.com - ganking miners and causing chaos |

Considering age of your character I would put dreams about freighters aside for now and fly in cheap t1 hauler. You could join one of few well known hauling corps like Frog or PushX and take small jobs just to see if you really like it. As a miner having your own freighter can be useful so you can train towards it anyway but for now I would settle for something that you can fit and fly and afford to lose.
Of course if this is only forum alt and your plans are for another character with proper skills and you have experience and know what to do go ahead and buy a freighter. If you won't like hauling for other people you can always just haul your own ore in it. I am not my skills but... http://eveboard.com/pilot/Schmata_Bastanold |

lot a ganking between Amarr and jita. Remember never autopilot..
Dont fly a freighter in lowsec space where you do not know many ppl. it will be a bonus for me if i se any freighter without protection. easy kill and loot of isk..
lot of Courier in null space for many isk are traps, ppl waiting for you to kill you..
but there are many small hisec Courier giving 2-3 milo isk per jump if people should have the fast forward, but be quick. There are many on the bid.

Seconding that you should not autopilot. It used to be ok if you were empty, but now even empty freighters run the risk of being ganked.
As for how much you'll make, it really depends on how much time you put in and how organized you are. |

That is the market rate for a 20 jump contract.
The contract is legit (in the sense that it is unlikely to be deceptive - the contractor wants you to succeed, not fail), but a scam (in the sense that you are being paid far less than you should demand). The ones that are likely to be scams are the ones paying much more than market rates (say 45m for 10j in high with a 1-2b collateral).
I call courier contractors useful idiots for a reason. They are useful, because they help make me rich. And they are idiots, because for the risk they are taking, they could and should charge a lot more.
For what it's worth, I used to post scam courier contracts (massive collateral, valueless goods, and I'd take some action to make them more likely to fail), but there is simply more money to be made out of playing them legit. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=346564 - a proposal to overhaul the Logistics skill https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=238931 - an idea for a new form of hybrid PVE/PVP content. www.minerbumping.com - ganking miners and causing chaos |

join red frog freight if you want to make a living as a hauler. Their rate is something like 750k isk per jump
BUT - its not much money and toons that do it are alts on autopilot. |

Freighters are for hisec +1 on joining Red Frog, you at least know they are legit contracts.
Note that you cannot safely fly a freighter with just a solo pilot you need a web buddy to get out of station in less than an hour.
For losec you will need a blockade runner of jump freighter. Join Black Frog. |

Go for Charon, even with only Caldari Freighter 4 it has larger cargo than other freighters with X Freighter 5. |

You can make more ISK early on in a T1 hauler doing inter-regional trading than picking up courier contracts for a fee. Have a look at racial meta 4 items and where they tend to drop -> set buy orders around busy mission hubs > nip in and out and resell either to buy orders in major hubs or slowsell them yourself via sell orders.
If you are set on getting a freighter long term, go look up RedFrog. Their website has some useful basic skillguides and explains the upside/downside to each type of freighter. It might even be worth signing up as one of their haulers to learn the ropes (altho I think there is a waiting list for that). TO THE RIPARDMOBILE! |

Imo, 1% reward based on the collateral isn-¦t uncommon.
Rewards can be even lower depending on the size of the package and the distance and should probably be higher if a Freighter is needed and if the route starts and/or ends in a sh!thole System I guess the amount of collateral might be a factor too, of course, but still, I am sure such a contract as you mention out of Jita for say 5 Jumps would get picked up fairly quickly. I just equipped myself with a Tayra, cargo expansion modules, shield boosters and agility-enhancing skillbooks. I can't find any contract with a decent pay and a decent collateral. Every contract has a ridiculous collateral of 40 million or higher for a 1 million reward. Need some DECENT courier contracts pl0x Aegroto dum anima est, spes est. |

Hi. Trucker here. Look at a Jita-posted haul contract. First thing, "set destination". If the route runs you through a single low sec system, that's where the ambush will be. Their buddies kill you. You default on the contract. The contractor keeps your deposit. Knowing that, now take a look at ALL those hauling contracts you see...what do you see? A good idea is to look at Red Frog's employment requirements, then load them into EVE Mon. You won't be seeing any significant money hauling any time soon.
After you've spent copious hours honing your ability to roam cat-like in hostile regions undetected (or undamaged) then you may want to revisit this as a "moneymaker." For now? You save money hauling it yourself. I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility toward every form of tyranny over the mind of man.-á |

And, mind you, how does one get employed by the Red Frog corp (*cough* where can I find the employment reqs *cough*)?

There are people that are highly specialized into courier services and get paid quite nicely. I tend to pay 500k or more per jump if I can, but sometimes I cut back on that pay rate. If the courier is helping me by hauling my stuff so I can make a nice profit I don't mind paying them well.
If you can tie up several contracts into one run, plan your route effectively along the way, and managed to avoid gank squads then you are good to go (several contracts in one haul = more then a level 4 payout or perhaps level 5 even). One thing that 'might' help to some degree is fitting stabs on your low slots, at least 2. In addition boost your agility as much as possible, as well as speed, and an AB also that might help you kick into warp even faster. If the group is highly determined to follow you, which most don't seem to be, then you might want to set up a safe for a second and try to wait them out. Keep up your Dscan and watch for sisters combat probes at all times...takes 30 seconds or so to scan you down. Also, if you can scout the route ahead of time and set up a FastDOCK at 0, and a fastUndock at several hundred km out from various stations that will likely help a lot as well. Undocking, hitting control+space to check outbound gate traffic (potential bumps with BIG ships), and then redocking and undocking again hoping for no bumps and a very quick warp out.
Jump Freighters themselves will allow you to bypass gate camps, but the cyno generator is also quite visible to others. Having a PoS (obviously with defenses in place) where the cyno can operate, or a base where all your players are to protect it, can help keep you safe while you transport. |
