CCP Snorlax comes with interesting news about the "EVE Probe", a stand-alone tool under development that will be used as test bed for optimizations and new features of the EVE graphics engine.
Read all about the EVE Probe, what it is, how it can help you, and what to expect from this tool in CCP Snorlax' latest dev blog Testing EVE Online's graphics with 'EVE Probe'! CCP Phantom - Senior Community Representative - Volunteer Manager |

As I asked in person at FF14, I reiterate here, knowing that Snorlax will be as supportive as we know he is.
EVE Probe under Linux? Is that helpful? Makes sense? You know, it might even help CCP with that game company and its vaporized water operating system... << THE RABBLE BRIGADE >> |

EVE Probe should run fine under Wine, just like the EVE client. Anything other than that - we'll have to see what we can cook up in our spare time...

Apart from this being used for performance testing, which is great, might this also be used as a 'tech demo' of sorts for EVE? I'm thinking like most benchmark apps (3DMark etc) have the testing portion together with a 'demo' portion.
Not saying this should be implemented, but im thinking it may be cool if the performance test is done in a manner to show off EVE's beauty as well - jumping, warping, space/nebulae, big battles, explosions! etc.
Heres to hoping :) |

Quote:EVE Probe then gathers performance data, such as frame times and memory usage and sends that back to our server, along with your machine specs and display settings. I hope that it also logs GPU temperatures. Sometimes you just warp-in to some random dungeon with one LCS and couple of asteroids and GPU temp start rising rapidly like you playing latest shooter on max settings. -¥ |

In addition to reporting crashes, will it report performance when it has run cleanly? I'd like to see frames per second, CPU/GPU temperatures and other statistics. Also, can it change detail levels, like the game does, so I can see the effects of those detail levels on the FPS/temperature readings? |

Heres to hoping :) The goal is to have the test scenes at least be visually interesting. I'm not saying they will be of the same quality as the EVE trailers, but we do want to show off our engine as we are probing it.

Would love if the probe gave some sort of score number on how good the puter is, I think the community might love comparing how good their hardware is, by who has the biggest score. Also would be cool if it was possible to run multiple instances, to see how many clients the computer could handle.
Additional feature could be recommended settings for EVE once the analysis is complete. |

will it also serve as benchmark? With an endscreen showing points and stuff? It might have 0 use for us but if it would make it into the hardware tests sites it would be free advertising for eve. 10/10 Would get Probed again
When (or before or after) the probe is released, is there anyway that some sort of information could be given about how players could most helpfully use it? For instance, presumably it will be helpful if players ran it on all their computers, old rigs and new rigs and laptops and tablets, etc., but will it also be helpful it players ran the probe under different configurations and system settings? Or is the data not going to be that fine-grained? To this end, it might help players using the probe if we were informed about exactly which specs and stats were collected (e.g. someone above wondered if GPU temperatures would be collected). |

Here is an idea. Let us "record" scenes from the game and play them back with EVE Probe. |
