Hiya, new to Eve and just starting on my feet. I just wanted to give a post to poke my head above the parapet and give everyone a friendly hello. Of course, I am enjoying this game (wouldn't have subbed if I didn't haha). Now the next question I need to ask myself is, what should I do with myself?
Hoping to find that out and meet some like-minded pilots along the way. I wonder in what manner our paths will cross |

Well, what do you enjoy doing?
Most people here would recommend doing the tutorials to get a feel for various career paths, then choosing one and going for it. Joining a player corp helps as well, though sometimes it may take a few corps to settle in to the right one for you. My twitch stream to help new players: http://www.twitch.tv/biohazrd51

Rough breakdown of some of the options in eve (complete with my own bias!): Mining and Missioning: If you like farmville, try this. The graphics will be an improvement. Farmville might have some more complexity though. Exploration: Interesting solo activity that I've never gotten into. Inconsistent income. Comes in both non-combat and combat varieties. Trade: Spreadsheets online. This is one of the professions where eve really shines. Its not for everyone though. Industry: See trade above. Hauling: Courier contracts pay pennies, but can add some income to hauling your own goods for other activities. Suicide Ganking: Low income, inconsistent payouts, and a little repetitive. It does have a significant amount of player interaction though. Awoxing/Corp Theft: Very inconsistent income, requires a special mindset. Payouts can be in the tens of billions if your really good/lucky. Scamming: See Awoxing above, but add in some more player interaction, and less shooting.
PVP: Every activity on this list is technically player versus player, but for this I mean shooting other combat fit ships. Doing this solo is usually an isk sink, but theres a few ways to make it profitable Ship Replacement Programs (SRP): Many corps will pay for your losses. This means that you actually make money off of insurance every time you lose a ship. Wardecs: Wardeccing corps and then forcing them to pay you to drop the dec. Be prepared to work solo or with a small group for this. Faction Warfare: Orbit beacons while shooting at other players that try to do the same. A great way to learn pvp. Be careful of faction standings though. You could try to find out what EVE is about.

First, welcome!
I have a couple of suggestions for you to try out.
1. Do all the mission tutorials. They give you a good overview of the basic game mechanics and the user interface.
2. Do the Sisters of EvE mission arc. It takes you around the EvE universe and gives you some nice rewards for starting out.
3. Join a group. Seriously, I can't understate how important it is to join a player group. In my experience, EvE is way more fun with others than alone. A couple of group suggestions are below.
- Brave Newbies: Very newbie friendly and just took sov. A very hands on approach to learning EvE PvP and null sec mechanics.
- EvE University: Very structured approach with classes and the like. They exist to take new players and teach them the various aspects of EvE. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=266074 - Sniggwaffe (Waffles)

Should have been stickied in NCQA tbh.

Thank you all for your imput and helpful links. They have been very useful and an interesting read. I have already decided that I dislike mining, so that's off the table. Not so good at PVP, but I might pick it up someday. As for Industry, it sounds ok, but as something for the side to tick in the background.
I've already pushed out into Null and enjoyed the rush of trying to sneak by other players (with sexy results! ) So I'm just trying little bit of everything. The tutorial missions were useful in helping me with the basics, as well as giving me a flavour of the menu that is Eve |

You can do it solo, but its extremely difficult. Finding a corp that runs 4-10 person pvp roams a few times a week can be greatly helpful. Yeah, I was thinking that would be a good step forward. I have yet to look seriously into Corps atm, but once I've made a little bread, I can afford to loose a few ships in the learning process haha.
On a different note, I've read the minerbumping.com stories and each and every one of them cracked me up haha |

For what to do... Your interests will change over the years. You might find your self wanting nothing but major fleet battles for a couple of years, then suddenly finding your self in high sec quietly mining away (even if you swore you would never do such a thing ). Or start out as a cold hearted pirate robbing corporations left and right and suddenly becoming one of those people that sit and say that people who do bad things in a game obviously have to be bad people in real life.
Thus, try whatever you feel like right then and there. For what options you have.. This link might help you.
For when your ready to join a corp.. How you end up finding a corp that interests you vary, but i would still advice you to read over this guide and do proper research on the corporation(s) in question before you make a final decision.
Other then that... Welcome to EVE and have fun Phoibe Enterprises official recruitment thread The Eve Reader - -áAudio Recordings of Eve Chronicles

Thank you, Nightcrawler 85 for that detailed explanation on finding a Corp to join. There were some very useful tips in there I did not consider. Another reason why I'm taking my sweet a** time choosing a corp. I like to thump the melon before putting it in my trolley haha

Hmm, not really, because the skills for industry are totally different than the skills needed for PvE/PvP. So you need another character. And you can only train one character by 15 Gé¼/$, be it on one account or many. Favoritism is good - CCP 2013 |

That makes sense. I guess what I enjoy doing mostly is exploration, going into WH's (or anyplace considered unsafe), playing around with blueprints, building things.
I'd like to get into group PvP, while I don't feel confident enough to beat someone 1v1, I am training skills such as warp disruption and moving to target painting etc. That way, while I might not be the strongest gun in the group, I can at least make life much more easier for those who do play with big guns.
What I want to avoid is Mining (I almost hold a lot of respect for the people who can endure watching that blue line tickle rocks for hours on end!), mission running and staying in highsec for pretty much most of the time.
As you can imagine, I'm looking for my big ticket out of highsec. I hear players can build and own stations in null, and that politics are a lot more important. I think that's something I can sink my teeth into. I'll be grinning from ear to ear if I ever helped put up a player station |

Done in groups mining isnt as bad, for those that can endure it. Ive had some fun nights mining, but not due to the process but to hanging out with internet spaceship friends .. shooting the **** on TS, posting links to interesting things on the interweb, while getting needed resources for the corp, add in a few maurading war targets forcing a quick evaq and re-ship to compat and back again after all clear .. and its not a bad night. Sorta like sitting around at a bar with friends shoot the ****, but actually "getting something done" and having something to show for it after fact.
I can solo mine with several accounts .. running 3-4 keeps me pretty busy .. but it isnt fun. It is however goal orientated .. i want X minerals so i can build Y with it .. the "fun" comes from setting and achieving goals. Doesnt float everyone's boat .. thats for sure .. but strangely i can do mining in eve once and while (less now .. alot in the begining) but i hate resource gathering and crafting in other MMO.
Anyhow .. not saying you should mine, not even close .. but there a thousand posts about how much mining sucks, so thought i would balance it with a mining can be ok, in groups and with a goal in mind. History is the study of change. |
