Could one of the Devs please explain why you would make a game that allows your account to have multiple characters, yet you can only train on one character at a time?
What kind of crap feature is that?

lots of uses for those other characters even though you cant train skills on them, and plus, lets face it - CCP makes a lot of money off people with multiple accounts

As with any other MMO game I have played you can only progress a single character at a time. To be honest EVE goes a little further with this by letting you play any of three (3) characters while training any of the other.

For the same reason that every other MMORPG in existance only allows you to level up one character at a time?

Yes, they make money on multiple accounts, so why even bother giving you 3 character slots?
I'm trying to wrap my head around why anyone would design it like that and all I can think of is money.
So again. Why even bother offering 3 characters? --

This is the first mmo i've played.
By telling me "it's the same reasons other mmos do it" doesn't tell me anything.
What are their reasons?
I want to hear if it's just for money. I can't see any other reasons for it. --

So basically what your saying is they are doing exactly what every other mmorpg developer does. Most give you the option to make more than 3 chars tbh. Maybe they did it to give people the option of posting on the forums anonymously or for people who want to roleplay with other chars.

Because, of course, following the Duku MUD grind treadm...oh wait, Eve dosn't.
The more rational reason is of course that CCP is a business. If you want to train multiple characters, pay for multiple accounts!

And its also because if everyone could train multiple characters, they would, of course.
This means that specialization would become pointless: everyone would get three characters to specialize each as they pleased, and there would be no in-game benefit to having a good specialization, because everyone else will have it too.

the extra slots are for going on raging exploit sprees and subsequently deleting the character.

But you're only aloud to log in on one character at a time.
So your reasoning is faulty.
If you're skilled in one aspect of the game and another character is skilled in another, it's not like you have an advantage being skilled on two characters.
You're limited to the character you're playing --

I was going to explain why having multiple characters with different skillsets is useful, but after this post there clearly isnt any point in me wasting my time.

If I was playing amarr for 2 years and felt like i wanted some refeshment. I would play as something else with another character. And I would be ****ed if I couldnt do that without paying for another acount. ..... ___________________________________________________

Edited by: Vizranuh on 28/06/2006 23:48:11 That's a valid reasons for multiple characters, however it's not a valid reason for only allowing training to be done on one character at a time. --

His reasoning is not faulty at all, try reading what he said again. Even though you're only allowed to play one character at a time, you would be training the other two at the same time. This would mean that everybody would have three characters, having each of t them equally skilled over different races/professions. So everyone would have:
1* _ber PvP character 1* _ber Mining/Science Character 1* _ber (Whatever, another race-skilled PvP character maybe)
And they could log each one in as they needed them, i.e mining with the mining char when they wanted, PvP'ing with the PvP char when they wanted etc. Do you see where I'm going?
Only being able to train one character per account forces you to choose one race/profession (or buy a second account), and not let everyone have every type of character they can play as they wish.

It's a valid point. Unfortunate and dissapointing as it is. --

Disappointing as it may be, it makes perfect sense. As you said it was your first MMO, and the fact that your avatar hasn't loaded on the forums, leads me to believe that you're a very new player.
Once you've played for awhile, you'll see why it's a good idea not to let everyone train all characters on their accounts.

You assume under the basis that my avatar doesn't load that I'm a "very new player".
It couldn't possibly be that I just haven't set up my profile to have my avatar load could it? --- Never. That would be crazy.
Thanks for your wonderful words of wisdom.

Ehm... portrait is loaded a certain time after your first post on the forums. Isn't a choice. SO you're either reasonably new, or have never posted before.

A good rule of thumb to follow
A. Don't insult the people you're trying to get help from. B. Especially don't insult people when you have no clue what you're talking about. Forum avatars are rendered and stored server side from the game, not user updated.

in a old dev chat i think it was oveur that said that with hindsight they wish they had not allowed 3 character slots per account but now it is in place and people have more than one trained charcter on the same account they cant remove it. -

Actually your arrogant, abusive and anti-social attitude in this thread leads me, and I would guess, many others to assume that you're very new to either this game or these forums.
As for the original point, in addition to the other points people have made, CCP have stated that another part of the reason for disallowing multiple skill-training characters on one account is to limit character farming and transfers.

Firstly, I have no idea why you found it necessary to act like an arrogant spoiled brat, when I was just giving you advice.
Secondly you cannot decide yourself whether or not your forum avatar will load, it just does it after awhile.
Thirdly, since you didn't know that, and since you said this was your first MMO, I'm now 100% sure that you're a new player.
And even if that isn't the case, then you're just another alt. I either case, don't expect any more advice or constructive critism, or even info from me. And be sure that if I ever see you in space you're going to wake in a cloning facility within minutes.

It takes a very long time to get specialised. new/old players come and go. There are 25,000 players online at peak times. Someone is always going to be more specialised than someone else and there will always be noobs. All you would have is more of the same.

Everyone would be able to do most things. For example, with my 2 accounts, rather than the caldari and minmatar specialists I currently have, I'd have a specialist in every race and a pair of other toons, maybe research/trade/industry. I'd never have a miner

I use one of ym free char slots for accepting payments an bills, so much easier to find payment history with out all the cluttered wallet i think.
Also how are you supposed to be an a 0.9 empire kestrel speed ganker with out your free char slot?
