And if so, how did you bring it up in the initial conversation? How do you describe the game to them? And what reactions do you get when people find out you play EVE? "No matter how well you perform there's always somebody of intelligent opinion who thinks it's lousy." - Laurence Olivier |

I have one person whom I know for work who is TEST. We had some interesting discussions.
Everyone else plays a different MMO, or is a historical wargamer. They know about EVE, and sometimes they like to hear my stories. Thus far, they've found it interesting, but the only one who seemed like he might be interested in playing got married and his wife is taking up all his time. Yeap, my workmates are well and truly aware.
On weekends and nightshifts (when the boss is away) I take my laptop with me, EVE helps those 12h shifts breeze by while others are watching movies or sleeping on duty.
I never take any heat, in fact most of them seem curious and often ask questions or sit down next to me to observe for a few minutes (EVE is very impressive visually!). They're all quite used to me delaying stuff at work now because I'm in the middle of a fleet lol

No.
EvE is the only game I play and none of my work colleagues are into gaming as far as I'm aware, so it never really comes up.
I often have the forum running in a tab while I'm working (like at the moment), but no one really sees that either because I'm in my own office when I'm not out on field work. Come Win At Eve - Join The Vendunari

I didn't bring it up in initial conversations, just mentioned that I'm playing computer games as one of my hobbies. I've told a few of them some stories about EVE later, then, when it fit in the conversation. I usually tell about the scope of EVE, but also about the differences to many other computer games I know. The freedom of action, the "unguided" experience.. (Edit: that includes the scamming and awoxing and other cut-throat stuff) Sometimes about specific events. Or about possible technological challenges of a single shard MMO of EVE's size.
They seem to find it interesting, but as most of them aren't really gamers, I don't see them subscribing anytime soon, hehe. |

What he said. I tend to keep my personal life to myself. The other guys I work with are all into sports. I have nothing in common with them. While they are sitting there going on about how great some guy on some sports team is, I am sitting there reading a book. "Please stop reopening silly rumor threads."-á CCP Navigator. |

I'm a developer, so conversations at work drift around to games quite a lot when we're at lunch or whatever. I have no idea what they are talking about most of the time. Before I was a software Dev, I was a classical violinist, so I think most of them don't think of me as being that much of a tech nerd. But then one of them asked me if I game. And I said I play EvE. The general consensus after that was that I'm hardcore neckbeard now. And maybe a psychopath.
I kid you not, a guy walked up to me a few days after that and said, "So I heard you play eve. Man. That's crazy. Do you think you could help me with this code I'm having problems with?" Haha! No one ever asked me for help before that. Ever. Turrents |

You know what's funny? I'm very good with excel. Most developers that I've met are not because they don't take it seriously. But, to me it's a very useful tool for some things. I learned it extremely well when I was doing market research. Sometimes it really is the best tool for the job at hand. But this guy was asking me about Java code, with which I have no experience. The only gamers I have at work play something like Farmville on iphones.
When talking about MMOs, their reaction is always "I don't have time for that, I'm gonna get addicted!" ...and they go back to watching some blonde dragon lady series for 2-4 hours, sometimes even more. |

I've spoken to people about it at work. Some of them play online games, but I've not found anyone else who plays EVE, or understands what its about more than superficially.
Its possible there is a player out there who just hasn't revealed themselves so they can find out who my character is and gank me. |
