Who are ISD?
ISD (Interstellar Services Department) is a volunteer program run by CCP Games it has many different roles and functions handled by specific divisions. I am here to discuss one division in particular, Aurora.
Who is AURORA?
AURORA (Auxiliary Union for Rallying, Observation, Recording, Analysis) is the event division within ISD, we work hand in hand with CCPÆs fiction writers to deliver hard hitting events throughout the EVE Universe. We are a group of volunteers that spend our free time generating ideas, producing and acting in events within EVE.
Fictional description of AURORA can be found Here
What do they do?
Well this is covered briefly in the above passage but I will try to break it down even further. AURORA creates fictional stories known as æeventsÆ which give the player populace an enriched experience and immerse them further into the game. The events can be a completely new storyline created by our Producers or it can be based on æPrime FictionÆ which is pre-defined storylines. The larger events which span across many months are what we call æArcsÆ and these are much harder to follow but have a much richer storyline and more involvement than a single run event.
The AURORA command structure is split up into 5 roles each with their different agendas which I will explain below in order:
Vice Admiral û This is the position of Nebulai and Galen who run Aurora overall with the guidance of CCP. They also approve the events created by Producers and Senior Producers.
Captain û This is where I and my fellow Captains Garthagk and Dogal sit. Our job is general administration of Aurora while the VAÆs liaise with CCP and make sure Aurora is going in the correct direction with events. We ensure that Aurora is running as the VAÆs intend as well as dealing with any concerns or issues Aurora members may have.
Senior Events Producer û These are senior producers who have been with the program a long time and oversee the training of Producers as well as helping them with their Arc creating and execution. Senior Event Producers are allowed to run Tier 3 events (Tier 3 being events which involve Prime Fiction entities such as Iskukone, Sarum, ORE etc) with the permission of CCP and guidance from Captains and VAÆs.
Events Producer û This is the main creation role within Aurora, the Producers can run Tier 1 and 2 events The Tier 1 event is completely generated from the Producers imagination with use and reference of the EVE history. The Tier 2 events can mention Prime Fiction entities but cannot change an everlasting element of said Entity. Producers generally create their own event/fiction and involve Prime Fiction in their events. The producer is responsible for the mentoring of new Actors.
Events Actor û Actors are one of the most important roles in Aurora as they are needed for every event produced. Actors quite simply act in the events that the Producers create a good grasp of fiction is required for all roles in Aurora especially this position. Actors can also create and use RPCÆs (Role Persistent Characters) which can be used for events/Arcs that are being executed already by Producers. The RPC is a character that has a certain history and traits which define him/her, the actor can use the RPC whenever they have time to.
If you choose to join Aurora you will come in as a trainee until you have passed your Actor training. Once this has been achieved and you have proven you have a flare for creation as well as acting you will be given the chance to raise the ranks as a Producer.
Can I join?
Yes anyone from EVE may join Aurora provided you are 18 years of age or older and are familiar with EVEÆs fictional history and stories. A strong grasp of fiction is required to join Aurora along with common sense and a good imagination.

Experience in role-playing in real life or online is an added bonus but not required.
We also tend to impose a limit of you having been in EVE at least a few months. A well rounded background in the different play styles will also help you go far, but never fear, we have PvP and other training programs designed to help get you at least semi-proficient.
Your role as an Actor will be to play characters that a Producer has created using the information he/she gives you and also your knowledge of that race.
How do I join?
Simple click on the following link and fill out the questionnaire, this will be sent to us for evaluation. If we like what we see we will send you an email with details on the next stage (Interview).
http://myeve.eve-online.com/isd.asp
Why should I care?
If you have ever felt that it would be great if EVE had more dynamic content for players to interact with or that you had a great idea and "man, if only I had a bunch of people to help me with this", AURORA may be perfect for you.
Within the AURORA program, you will have the opportunity to create. You will be able to come up with your own stories, characters, and give players something interesting to interact with and take part in. You will be given the opportunity to give back to EVE, enriching the experience for everybody.

If they hire you, i bet "generating ideas, producing and acting in events within EVE" will suddenly become alot about the pain of losing stuff.
Edit: This was made a sticky AFTER I posted all this crap, so its not my fault!

It costs nothing but a few minutes to apply, and you might find that this is your true calling in the universe.
And if it turns out AURORA isn't for you, but you want to volunteer some time to make EVE a better place, fill out the application anyway! The same form is used to apply for all of the volunteer programs.
I look forward to seeing some of you in the program!

could you say if there would be a issue with an aurora member being an employee of another MMO in development at the moment?
(ex RPG industry, now in computergames, plublished titles, plenty of experience... but could understand if CCP would consider it unacceptable)
posted with an alt, to avoid any hassles of people asking what company. suffice it to say, not Blizzard. I have some shame. :)

We don't presently allow in people who are affiliated with another game. Being industry, I'm sure you can understand the reasoning behind this, but thank you for asking!
If you should find yourself unattached in the future, please feel free to give us a shout. We'll be here.

If you've been "officially warnned" by the GM staff due to exploiting.... does that make you ineligble.

It really depends on the exact situation and the strength of the application. AURORA does not automatically turn people down for having prior warnings, but it does raise the bar.
In the end, such decisions come down to the Vice Admirals, and I've seen it go both ways. I'd definitely encourage you to apply if you're interested, though. You won't know until you try.

*puts a finger on the stack of exiting news articles about all the breathtaking events that took place over the last two years*
I am not new to the EVE-online website, but where can we read the event news? There is no link to the news area. Petitioned three times and still nothing.
If half the 'public' events are covered in the 'official news' and the event forum, EVE consists of a gazillion lotteries and a regular player driven racing event.
If you want your project to flourish, you need more news, more info, more coverage in the event forum and the ingame news area. And you have to avoid 100% nowin situations for the partaking pilots. (As with the Amarr traitor asking Minmatar pilots to help him free loads of slaves to take off in his freighter and thank the pilots for providing him with this new and free stock of slaves.) --*=*=*--

There was an opposing event too at another time where the Amarr pilots could choose between two short ends of a stick too. The Minmatar and Amarr event just left a couple of RP players very ****ed.
In my time as AD&D campain GM I did a similar stunt - but I had a series of 16 events planned ahead so the group could take revenge their way. The feedback on that single event was kinda devastating. I wont do no such thing any more as it leaves angered and depressed players (at least until the next event).
I used to assist in events in two muds. A short news item or a report about the event makes the players eager to see more events and and they're pretty proud when they're mentioned for special deeds and outstanding ideas. It doesn't take a lot of preparation to write a rough news article in advance for each possible outcome. You already know the possible outcome when you designed your event carefully. Right after the event you adjust it and plug in the names for quick coverage in the news. --*=*=*--

Welcome to the concept of volunteering.
It is indeed at times awfully close to an unpaid job but that pales in comparison to how very rewarding it is. All of us in Aurora have decided to give our time to this, freely, because we like to tell stories and we like to get pilots excited about events.

I've asked this multiple times and never gotten an answer.
If you apply to join any of the ISD sections do you have to have that character on a seperate account to your normal character or can they be on one account? Reason i ask is i'm interested in applying but can only afford 1 account.

Well volunteers work isn't new to me (Red Cross), but paying to do volunteers work is a bit to much if you ask me. I don't mind to help for free, but the concecpt of paying to do volunteers work is a bit weird.

You get a new (free) account for your ISD stuff, and if you put in the required time the fee for you normal account is waived.
That is certainly how it used to be.

I understand liking to tell stories, writing can be a rewarding experience for both the conciever of the work as well as its audience. The writing is not in question, I'm just curious how you can so easily hand over such effort/works and their copyrights to CCP for full gain onto them ~_~. I'm just used to having companies pay writers (including where I work) for their talent and effort... or seeing fanfic that is wholy owned by those who wrote it on 'fan-sites'. This whole thing seems a miss to me in some ways(to be noted: i'm not a writer), just being inquisitive and curious as to reasons and such especialy from those that do it, not so much trying to question/wreck what you do ;-). "for the sake of writing" seems a bit of a watered down answer to me. Tohugh there is a possibility you want to expand eve and its roleplay enviorment..then I guess the question would go out to CCP asking as to why they're not empursing you for your work and still taking c/w ;-).
Then again i've done beta testing free of charge jsut to bug test a game and help get it to a better state(as i've known many others do), so perhaps it is the same drive...
then again maybee i'll get in deep trouble for asking these questions 0.0

Any possiblity of getting confirmation of this statement from an acutal ISD member or similar person of authority?
