Hey guys, ive been bored for some time of my mission runner and i am looking for a change of pace and figured i would get some feedback on new toys.
I am looking for a rail platform(preferably as minimal drones as possible) that can at least bring some pain into a lvl4 mission(no over shiny items).

There's really only five battleship-sized ships that work okay with railguns: Megathron, Hyperion, Megathron Navy Issue, Kronos, and Rokh.
The Kronos is great for missions but inherently shiny, and the Rokh is slow and rather capacitor-deficient. The Hyperion has a defensive bonus (armor repair) that can work nicely for mission running. Hyperion has small targeting range (it is a blaster platform by definition) and has very good drone bandwidth. Megathrone Navy Issue has good bandwidth as well. I believe Rokh is your best choice here, cause it can fit 8 turrets and has largest targeting range. |

Mega or variant w/ 350s for missions. When you look at damage across all targets (cruisers and BS plus the frigs you can shoot coming in on you) the 350s are best. If you're just slugging BS then 425s are where it's at.
Play around w/ painter and cap mods (for repping) in the mids. |

Personally, I fly a Blaster Kronos and I absolutely love it. But if I was looking for a a non-shiny ship, here are my thoughts:
Rail Mega would be my first choice. Great damage, great tracking, enough range for pretty much any mission. Engage at typical mission ranges, consider packing a web for close-in targets. You should be able to blap frigates out to 20km or so with your guns, and whatever gets in close you have drones to deal with (keep them away until needed to avoid aggro). You don't have a tanking bonus, but with a single primary weapon system and 8 lows, your tank can still be impressive.
Rail/Sentry Hyperion would be my second choice by a narrow margin. You have a lot of damage potential (more than the Mega actually) and a nice tanking bonus, but finding the right balance with only 7 lows and two weapon systems can be a bit tricky. This one is also more skill intensive since you need really good drone skills, so it probably would not be a good fit for you right now, but it's something to keep in mind.
The range bonus on a Rokh is nice, and using a MJD to dictate range can keep you very safe by reducing incoming fire, but this takes forever.

Navy Mega would be my choice. I value mobility. Oh god. |

Does Proteus qualify as shiny? Rail Proteus works nicely. |

You said you want something fun. I don't know what your definition of fun is, so I'll go w/ my definition of fun:
Cool Ship + blowing things up for 20 minutes = fun
For that, I would give to you any of the following:
Tengu, Eagle, Vulture, Astarte, Proteus (not too shiney!) and Ferox
Are any of them fast at the missions? Maybe the Astarte (something like 700 dps, give or take), and maybe the Proteus, none of the rest of them get past 500 DPS (Ferox hits 350ish)
Can they all tank a Lvl 4? certainly
Will there be issues if you don't get scram/web frigs right away? Totally
Will you have a ton of fun (from my definition) flying around, finding range while also trying to avoid damage? Absolutely!
Each of these fits needs an AB, shine at Guristas (kin/therm) missions and Javelin ammo (to max the Damage). Believe it or not, you'll be shooting "at range" w/ CN AM!
Hope you find your fun! Cedric

Hope you find your fun! I've given some serious thought to trying my hand at level 4s with an MJD-fit Ferox. The range tank you can get on that thing is pretty impressive, and the MJD lets you dictate range far better than an AB. Certainly won't be the fastest mission-runner around, but it may be fun. My Ferox:
7x250mm rail II Caldari Antimatter, with 3xMFS II, w/o drones puts out 573dps. Damage wise that should be good for L4s, were as my Raven puts out about 980dps. I'm still iffy on the Ferox's tank in some of the harder L4s. I wish it had one more mid slot.
L3s in the Ferox are just as boring as L4s in a Raven. So to bring back some excitement, I may try and run the Ferox thru as many L4s as possible (I already know there's going to be some warping out.)
I've been disappointed with the Rokh, seems for a BS it should do more. Going to have to try and train for the Mega.

no one has yet mentioned rail/sentury domi
it can project damage out beyond 125+k and still hold a good tank very nice lvl 4 mission runner with rails. |
