Hello all! first post and only 2nd day in EVE! I have always wanted to play this game but due to time restraints could not dedicate the time I wanted. Well, now that im retired im jumping in! Just started running the first set of newbie missons and am having a blast!
Anyway, my question is this. Me and my gf both went gallente because the thought of running all drones sounded like fun. Are drone ships useful in pvp and missions? Our plan is to run missions together until we get some skills and then join a corp and get into some pvp! What should be we be aiming for in skills and ships to get us started and working on the future? |

It depends really.
Drones are very good platforms for PVP.
How you like to PVP will dictate what you fly and fit. I prefer in your face committed to a fight. So heavy DPS and Buffer is on order for me. Which means a wide range of Offensive systems but primarily Blasters, and armor for heavy buffer. The goal is to survive long enough to kill my opponents before they kill me.
I don't have the luxury of somebody warping in and repping me.
You are lucky though. You can PVP multiple ways. Both with heavy offense/buffer to kill people, or 1 offense/buffer with another in a ecm ship to jam your opponents, or 1 offense/defense with the other in a RR ship for Remote repair.
See what you like. If you have any questions you are more than welcome to send me a mail. "Kane is the End Boss of Highsec." -Psychotic Monk |

What Kane said + I would suggest joining some newbie friendly corp right after you finish tutorials. You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain by learning from more experienced corpies. Look around recruitment forums and see if you like some ads or just post one yourself with clear description what you expect from corp. There is no obligation to act on it if you won't find anything suitable but you can always visit chat channels of few corps, talk to people, get a feeling how it looks like, what kind of people are there, etc.
Btw, you are second guy within 2 days posting about his girlfriend playing Eve with him. WTF is happening? Some military experiment got busted and things got out from underground bunkers or sth? :) Eve Online Overview Wizard: Forum thread Homepage

Welcome! May your explosions be pretty and plentiful :)
Besides, Drone ships are very versatile because the drones basically dictate what you can do. You can mine with them, do damage with them, salvage stuff with them, have them shield boost or armor rep you. and even more!
All you need to do is keep an eye on their tiny health bars ;)
On a bit more serious note, I recommend to both look for something you to "specialize" in. Of course the both of you can fly the exact same fit. But you will have more fun if you can actually depend on eachother in my opinion. Someone being the dedicated Shield booster, or core scanner, or extreme damage dealer while the other is the huge tank to take all the cute red plushies in space to shoot at them. Or something.
Also, I have to recommend PvP early! It is best to learn with low lvl skills and low cost fits because as I mentioned earlier, you will explode, and it will happen a lot.
Just browse through the Recruitment forum or ask in local. There are a lot of friendly people out there :)
Besides that, Hafe fun! And if you see me, say hi ;) |

Drones are your little glowing friends
Imicus, Algos, Vexor, Myrmidon & Dominix are the cheap options for drone life Worm, Ishkur, Ishtar, Gila & Rattlesnake are the expensive options
for missioning guides use this site and you shouldn't have any problems at all
for pvp, im no expert, but armour buffer + blasters + drones should be fine |

You should take the time and read through the description of all combat ships (here is a good source). You will need to know what they do because you will have to fight against them at some point and while you are reading, you can decide which ships you like best.
As far as drones go, a buddy of mine used to fly a Dragoon and win 1v3s against frigates in Faction Warfare. Surely, a pair of them will be even more deadly. First rule of EVE UI: right click EVERYTHING. |

Generally speaking, all races and weapon systems are pretty well balanced in this game we love. There really is no 'best' ship or weapon, which is pretty awesome if you ask me!
Having said that, the ships/weapons you fly will ultimately depend on your playstyle:
. If you're fairly 'casual' players, just fly anything you like or simply 'looks good' or 'sounds fun' to you. Don't worry, you'll do fine anyway
. If you'll become farily 'serious' pvp-ers, you'll probably want to eventually try all weapon systems and most ships. At the very least, to better understand the strengths/weaknesses of what your 'enemies' will be flying
. If you'll eventually join a decent, active pvp corp, they probably will have 'fleet doctrines' (that is: they all fly the same ships to make group combat more effective), so you'll just go along with what the corp 'theorycrafters' and fcs (fleet commanders) come up with
Have fun, both of you! EVE Online: Death-o-meter |

Lol, she is a huge gamer like me, but she is tired of waiting for the new WOW expansion so I got her to try this with me, so far she enjoys it, but she is a natural blonde so she is having a lot of difficulty grasping all the information being thrown at her lol.

as mentioned above, join an established Corp, preferably one that PvP s and is newbie friendly, you will learn much much faster than going it alone.
Forget everything you learned in wow, it will not apply here for the most part. The pve is little more than turning the isk facet to the " on " position so don't expect it to keep you engaged for any great length of time. The real content of eve is us and the freedom with which we are allowed terrorise intact with each other.

All weapon systems are great, as are all the different 'races' ships. They excel slightly at different things, all of which are very useful in many situations.
Allow me to toss in a bit of training advice though, since you mentioned you're interested in PVP -
Train Every faction's frigates, destroyers, and cruisers to low levels, and all their weapon systems to low levels. This might sound like a lot.... But it's not that bad. As long as you don't train stuff past 3, if you don't have to, then doing this gives you a lot of easily-earned versatility. And versatility, not specialization, is your best friend as a new-ish pilot.
This might not be a good idea for you just yet, but maybe a month from now I'd highly suggest doing this. Dont let yourself get pigeonholed into one faction or weapon system. Diminishing returns via the Skill Points training system strikes hard in Eve. By contrast, versatility is the gift that keeps on giving, especially in PVP. So do a few days minimal investment, so that you can always use the best tool - aka ship - for the job at hand.
Unrelated: as you're playing as a pair, you might be interested in this recent thread - https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=4830577

You can do all Level 1 and many Level 2 missions with just a Tristan frigate with drones and maxed Level 5 drone skills. I did as a newbie. "No matter how well you perform there's always somebody of intelligent opinion who thinks it's lousy." - Laurence Olivier |

You'd better hope that natural blondes don't read their boyfriends posts or you'll be playing eve while sleeping on the couch.

So about drones they have pros and cons mainly in that:
- can be destroyed by both players and NPC's. - NPC's like shooting drones a LOT and tend to ignore you because CCP obviously hates Gallente ... - In PvP drones have their use but are a bit clumsy to use as they have to deployed and / or travel to target first so in a tight spot they also tend to be left behind or because of the clunky UI you forgot that they are still out. - However because yuo have drones you can and often will leave guns out from a drone ship which gives you more room for utility slots and fitting to spare that being said drones ships tend to have rather beefy tanks compared to gun ships.
- Ordinary drones come in 3 sizes light, medium and heavy - Fighters and fighter bombers aren't really drones even if game mechanics consider them as such. - sentry drones are stationary guns that can have effective range up to 120km's and further if the ship has been fitted for it. - sentry stats work with same principles as normal guns in your ship 8tracking, falloff, optimal etc.) - since sentries don't move they have to picked up after a fight and slow boating after a mission to pick them up can be quite annoying to say the least. - As sentries cannot move they can be hit quite easily so fitting a remote rep and orbiting your sentries isn't an unusual tactic in PvE or even in PvP. - drones have a different bandwidths depending from their size so that in "normal circumstances" you have lights for use in frigates/cruisers, mediums for Cruisers / BC's and heavies / sentries / gecko's for BS's and specialized drone ships that are smaller then a BS but have sizeable drone bay and bandwith. - you can have only 2-3 geckos in any given sub capital ship, this intended as geckos are very powerful drones, mine have 10k ehp with a stratios for example.
this becomes too long if I start spouting about what drone ship is best and for what but I used to fly Ishtar's which is a fantastic ship on it's own but now that I have found Stratios I don't see how I could use any other ship for PvP with it's ridiculous Amarr resist bonuses, covert ops cloak and it even has a room to fit blasters for some close up goodness.
and best of all this package is a cruiser. |

I did those with max drones skills in an unfitted Vexor because I was lazy ... |
