The truth is - that it has always been relatively safe and profitable to mine AFK.
You look at the forums and listen to all the junior bad asses braying about how mean they are and you'd think there was utter carnage going on out in the belts.
There isn't.
Sure - some people do get ganked - but as with common herd animals - most don't. They go on mining away while they do something else, bringing in the ISK.
There is no guarantee you won't be ganked - but there is no guarantee that you will be either. You can mine AFK for years and not be ganked.
The number one thing you can do to avoid being ganked is - mine in a quiet system. If there are fewer people around - it is less likely that one of them will attack you. One factor in that - is the time of day. EVE is a world wide game - but it is less busy at some times than others - such as prime time EST or during weekends or holidays.
Gankers are in it for the fun of messing with other people. To do that - they have to have other people to mess with, thus - they are attracted to busy systems.
Go to the map - set it to show ships in space and then ships destroyed - then don't be in those places.
You can't just mine for hours AFK. The asteroids aren't that big. So - before you start - and when you come back to target more rocks - look at local. If there are people you don't know there - check them out, see if they look suspicious. If there's someone there you don't like the looks of - then make a decision. You can just dock up for a while and see if they go away.
Gankers want excitement. They don't want to do something that is boring, like combing through a lot of low pop systems looking for someone to pounce on. More fun to go where the pickings are rich.
Be boring. Don't draw attention to yourself. You're here to make ISK - NOT to pretend to be come kind of computer game bad ass.
Now - there are things you are giving up to do this. If there aren't a lot of other players around - there is a reason for that. Quiet systems are quiet because no one has a reason to be there.
One thing - is that you are probably going to be mining Veldspar if you are mining AFK - if only because for everything else the rocks are to small. But - if you're in a 1.0 or .9 system - that's what they've got anyway.
Mine in mission space in a quiet system and you really reduce your chances of getting ganked. Here though - you have to FIND a quiet system with an agent that gives missions with rocks in them - note - that these are NOT mining missions. Those usually only have the mission rocks in them. It is the combat missions that have the rocks that are marketable.
Having a good tank only matters if you do get attacked - and your primary goal - should be to avoid getting attacked in the first place. That said, once you have the money to afford a good tank - it will reduce your chances of getting ganked by just one guy. Here you're getting into a situation where you are balancing the cost of your ship and it's tank vs. how much that will help you survive - and not have to buy another ship. How much it helps you survive also factors in what kind of fire power the gankers have to have to pop you before Concord pops them. Here, it isn't just the cost to the gankers of the ships they'll lose, since a lot of them really don't care and will gladly sacrifice a more expensive ship to pop a cheaper one - just so they can mess with the player owning the cheaper ship. However, if they have to get a gang together - that takes more organization on their part - which takes more time. They can certainly do it - they do it all the time - but it does make it harder for them to do and that effort cuts down on how often they can do something like that.
So - if you are mining in a quiet system, in mission space and the gankers don't already know who you are - they've got to fly around until they find you (which includes scanning you down if you are in mission space) - then judge how much it's going to take to gank you - and then get that organized. To much of that stops being fun - and becomes work. They can do it - but after a while a lot of them are going to go do something else - like go to a high pop system where victims are easier to find.
Now - all of the above is not just true for AFK mining - it's true for any kind of mining ... just more so if you are AFK.
Just remember the #1 rule in EVE: Don't fly what you can't afford to lose.
You can be right there - and still get ganked. So if you're going to mine AFK - be able to afford the loss if you do lose your ship.

Actually the rule is - use a posting alt on the forums. That way - you can say whatever you want - without any repercussions to your active characters or their corporations.
Unless of course - you're a computer game bad ass looking for trouble.

Indeed it is. Locating this toon will leave you sorely disappointed with a busted Sarum Magnate hull at best... |

Great advice. I especially like Tip 10. I think Jump Freighters can reach over 350,000 m3 cargo now with the new changes. There's no excuse anymore, carebears.
