Poen wrote:With all the great updates and content it's hard to really pay attention to a pie in the sky ship like the titan. However, ever since I began playing eve online years ago, it was always my intention to sit in a titan by any means. I'm the kind of gamer that has no problem spending months working up the resources and components and implants, just to lose them all in one great fight or something. And as I skilled to mission and mine for everything I needed, I also raised skills from the titan mastery pages and prerequisites to the point where I'm only 79 d away, less with my last neural remap for spaceship command.
Let me first say that tactical Titan use that I've seen on youtube is pretty impressive, and I understand why if you value your investment you'd be very careful with a Titan. The point is I spent at least a year and some working to that goal and I'm now saving up for a BPC to build. When I brought this to the "Help" chat I got some pretty upturned noses. I don't get it, these are the biggest, baddest ships out there, the showcase of CCP right there. Consider the kind of attention it brings, the new players it must intrigue. They told me it would never happen, because noone would let you actually get the titan built. That people would raid it and sack the goods and sell them off. They also told me that the Titan is apparently worthless in combat. I'm also told that titan pilots are "forced" to logout to make alternate characters and only log on when they are summoned. And then finally I was told the Titan isn't even a fun adversary to fight.
I guess the Titan is not really a possibility for me after all. After all of the isk I spent on the skillbooks and the time it took to train these skills, it's just not possible. Why is the game designed this way? Titans are like the size of mobile cities, they look spectacular compared to some of the smaller ships, and in a space game there is a great need for a looming giant that is both difficult and fun to fight. And it's something that drew me to EVE right away. I had a misconception about Titans, that perhaps after all these years they would have been improved or reworked to either provide a benefit to players or provide a fun fight for all these 300 man Hawk fleets! And just to see the brilliant explosion of the huge ship, it would be worth it. It is a game after all. Imagine if everyone just shot down anyone that chose to play minmatar, I feel it's an apt comparison.
Anyways I say this with peace and love, I really enjoy the community and the game, I just don't get why if I want to make a big ship and lose it entertaining some corporation or something, and get podded, and it doesn't bother me, that I'd be allowed that opportunity. It was truly my goal to sit in the Titan and see for myself what it was like. I'm still going to finish the skillplan for it, in hopes that someday Titans don't have to be forced to play a certain way.
I'll never forget some fellow I met in a temp job in Florida once, a land where IT jobs are as rare as locally born natives. He was living in a trailer and talking about his lofty dreams for when he would land that high-paying IT job (the sort that someone just out of college living in a trailer does.not.get in Florida where you have to be God with a BS and at least 7 years experience get "the high paying IT job").
I didn't say a word. I didn't have the heart to tell him. Bring back DEEEEP Space! |

I get that a lot of you would care about keeping it alive, but I just wouldn't. I don't care when all my other ships have died xD Anyways you guys have some interesting points. But it all just seems to add up to that with every other ship in the game you can log in and start some action with your corp or just do something fun and with a Titan you just can't. I also figured that some corps would let someone grow a titan under protection to get the killmail.
All things that seem to be overwhelmed by the prospect of instant gratification. I understand though a lot more some of the things keeping me from actually building one now. This item of both wonder and burden is definitely something no other game has. I really feel like I didn't really waste my time skilling some of the stuff I did for Erebus. Many of the skills I learned will help me with other ships. But just imagine if it was this way for like, the Scythe, the mighty Megathron or perhaps the Hawk were that way. Where just building them puts you under fire and no matter how much you wanted to just at least sit in one and provide a fun battle for others. Except, as you've stated it isn't a fun battle. So actually I really no longer see the point.
But it sure does look cool doesn't it. And the trailer makes it look exciting to play. Thanks for your replies. |

I, too, want a titan. I'm closing in on it.
And then my character will take a long nap, like a vampire, in their coffin. ^^ Delicious goon ((tech nerf, siphon, drone assist, supercap)) tears.

titan's are eve's endgame, all there is to it. It's a nearly unkillable, kill-everything-in-sight ship that takes over a year to pilot, and another year to pilot properly.
I'll stick with my archon though. it's only slightly slower than molasses and has a dank tank so im pretty happy.
I just wish carriers could go in highsec because people in low are mean :( That's a Templar, an Amarr fighter used by carriers. |

Test Server.
You completely missed the entire point of Titan on the live server.
It isn't about an SP tree, it's about a social network in an MMO and your ability to forge one that is willing to aid you in the quest to build Super Capitals. At no point should anyone ever be able to 'go it alone' in the super capital venture and before anyone mentions Chribba, the man spent years forging the very social networks I mentioned.
For the rest of us, Test Server. |

Because you are no longer AFKing, you are piloting a titan. Which from what I understand is like prison, without the buttseks. Or same say with depending on who you talk to. This thread has so much content it may be 'Thread of the Year' and it is only January.

That of course will change once enough new players whine about how unfair it is vet players can fly Titans and they cannot.

here is kinda the deal with titans and really supers.
when i started eve around late 2006. eve at that time had maybe like 5 titans or so. titans were a myth something you heard of but rarely if ever saw.
ccp in theory did expect many titans to be ingame. isk had a different value you then. a battle ship while around 100m isk or so is cheap now. it actually was harder to obtain then. let alone the billions for a titan.
ccp has changed the influx of isk so much, that it made titans and supers almost readily available.
ccp has made it clear they didnt expect it to go this far with titans and supers. however it is now a part of eve.
titans and supers are end game for a character. they cant dock. you can only log off inside them to keep them safe. staying logged in only brings attention.
you can only build them in a pos set up for that kind of build. building one outside of any sizable alliance to protect it, will only bring unwanted attention.
so the real thing here is do you want that kind of play style? log in once or twice a week for 30 mins or less. is that worth your sub fee? these are the things all prospective titan pilots must ask them selves.
hope this helps. |

Building a titan is the eve equivalent of replacing your teeth with diamond - Flashy, impractical, expensive, painful for you, time consuming for a team of people, probably included some illegal labour and the spilling of another's blood in a country far away from yours and above all attracts attention of the most warranted and unwarranted sorts. In the end you kinda of regret it at some level but you're stuck with it. |

Ah, to dream of supers...
Jumping to a cyno, pressing F1 (your doomsday) on the primary and continuing until you die or downtime hits... maybe once a year.
Or just getting ganked by elo knight's boys in the spaceshower (a bubblebath, perhaps?) ^^ Delicious goon ((tech nerf, siphon, drone assist, supercap)) tears.

Poen wrote:I always wanted to fly a Titan. But is it still a good road to follow?
I read all the above stuff to at least see one similar reply to the one I'm about to give.. Sadly enough I was disappointed.
Here it comes: I LOVE your dedication into playing EVE the way YOU want to play it
Sure, you will have troubles building your Titan, keeping it alive especially. but... That's not the point!
If you want to fly a Titan, go for it! Get it blown up and BAM! mission accomplished.
And after that you can simply use all the gained skills to do something else to have fun with in EVE.
Some people take EVE way to serious and speak about "wasting time on SP". You only waste time if you get SP for something you do not enjoy. Because let's be honest here..
EVE is a game, and games are meant to be fun |
