When considering the Burn Huola campaign, one must first look at the Arzad campaign. 'Ourzad!' The Amarr made a big thing about the fact that the Arzad campaign lasted 5 or 6 weeks in an effort to convince the Huola defenders of the relentless assault that would continue against Huola. The two campaigns were completely different, but none the less both sides took on board the lessons of the Arzad campaign and decisions and changes made had huge impacts on the Burn Huola campaign.
First off, the Arzad campaign was primarily a TimeZone war between farmers with some fighting in the Euro TZ. Amarr farmers would plex up the system when nobody was around during the late US and Australasia TZs. Minmatar PvPers would be forced to deplex Arzad in the Euro and early US TZs. In about the third week of the campaign, the Amarr attempted to fight the Minmatar during the Euro TZ. In the main Iron Oxide and friends wiped the floor with the Amarr, but the fights were primarily about delaying the Minmatar deplexing effort. The Amarr failed in that objective, but it had its results, after another 2 weeks of winning virtually every battle, Iron Oxide pilot were getting sick of logging in each day to find us still only clinging to the system by our fingernails. It wasn't an enjoyable experience and fewer and fewer pilots were logging on each day.
A meeting of the directorate of Iron Oxide in the forth week of the campaign decided that win or lose, once the Arzad campaign was concluded we would relocate to Huola where we could rely on LNA and other US alliances to provide the cover we lacked in other TZs. The question was asked do we give up and move straight away or continue to fight, knowing ultimately that the fight was hopeless? Even at that point we sub consciously looked toward the future Burn Huola campaign and decided we had to fight to the end, make it as painful as possible for the Amarr, so that they will think twice about following us to Huola and trying the same thing again.
For another week we fought on and to be honest there were clear signs of Amarr burnout occurring and for a brief moment it actually looked like we were going to win the campaign. At that point the Amarr finally turned to Fweddit, a massive blob was brought in for the final weekend, with around 120 pilots continuously in system. The handful of Iron Oxide pilots online decided to blue ball them rather than feed them kills. Let their massive PvE operation be as boring as possible. It is interesting to note that at the conclusion of the Burn Huola campaign the CEO of Fweddit stated that after Arzad, they we so burnt out just orbiting buttons that they could not consider a similar strategy for Huola and went for a PvP orientated one.
Having said that though, it is clear that the intended Amarr strategy for Huola was not a PvP one. It was a blobfest, surprise, headshot one. I say that without meaning to sound critical, it was a good plan, intended to take Huola within 48 hours before the Minmatar could react. To mimic the final weekend of the Arzad campaign, where Minmatar pilots didn't even try to fight the Amarr horde.
It was about Pay to Win and I do mean that critically. It is clear now that the Amarr sank hundreds of billions into the campaign. It is also clear that certain elements of the Amarr, particularly Biohazard abused the crap out of the Buddy Invite and Power of Two programs to set up a number of second and third accounts for the sole purpose of flooding the system with Amarr Militia characters and frightening the Minmatar away with sheer numbers - to actually avoid fighting. I suspect that a great deal of account sharing took place with these accounts too, but that is difficult to prove. These accounts were opened in May of 2014, clearly indicating that planning of the campaign had began well before that.
June of 2014 saw one of the lowest ever activity months in FW for the Minmatar / Amarr Warzone. I suspect this was more coincidence than plan, the World Cup was on and it was a beautiful Summer in the UK. It served to lull the Minmatar to sleep still further, fewer and fewer people were logging on and almost all the fights were against Neutrals/Pirates like Anslo's Scope Works.
The Assault began at 2100 (EvE) on Sunday 6th July. Credit where due, it caught us (the Minmatar) completely by surprise and was perfectly timed to hit us as our strongest TZ waned, too late for us to respond and then give them virtually 16 hours of uncontested plexing.
Prior, or as the assault began, at least 9 Amarr Militia POSs and 1 Caldari Militia POS, 5 of them large deathstars, were set up in Huola and filled with hundreds of reships. As midnight approached, Templar Dane started the infamous 'Burn Huola' thread in the Warfare and Tactics forum, it was immediately signed by the CEO of Biohazard and then a shed load of other Amarr militia corp CEOs. The purpose of this thread I assume was to further frighten the Minmatar defenders off with the show of solidarity and commit the weaker Amarr corps if the going did get a bit tough. But there was an element of arrogance and 'look at me' to it and in doing so, it was the first shot in their foot that the Amarr made.
The Amarr had taken us completely by surprise. It would normally take until the next evening before half the Minmatar even became aware of the attack. Then it would take another 24 hours before those Minmatar could muster their friends. But that thread warned everyone from the off. Our friends particular the GalMil were ready to join us on night one of the campaign, instead of just hearing about it then. Their second shot in the foot occurred when some random Amarr boyed up with expectation, posted in local at Anslo the CEO of Scope Works (a pirate entity living in Huola) and told him: "Once we have got rid of the Minmatar we are ejecting you pirate scum from this system too." Anslo is a PvPer and reacted in the obvious way. He threw in his lot with the Minmatar. Now in the normal course of events, Scope Works isn't a particularly big entity that needed to be feared. But their importance was in their TZ, right in the middle of the Minmatar's biggest hole. They became far more important to the campaign than their numbers would normally have made.
Despite the shots in the foot, the first night of the defence (Monday) was fraught with problems for the Minmatar. More turned up than should have done, but plenty still didn't know or were unavailable at short notice. We found ourselves desperately short of reships, Iron Oxide for example had just 8 Inquisitors and 14 Augorors in our corp hangers and we were reliant on people's personal ships to hold the line. A Huola defence fleet was running utilising pilots from dozens of corps and alliances, but they were not used to working together, did not have the same ship comps or know tactics in their use.
The GalMil that came down made a huge impact in our favour and props to them. They weren't as numerous as the Amarr would later claim but some of their best pilots came down and ran rings around the so called Amarr 'leet' pilots running harassment missions.
The strong Euro TZ began with the system at over 30% contested. A series of huge battles kicked off with the Minmatar winning most but far from all of them. As the Euro TZ waned we had clawed the system back to 19%, it wasn't enough. The Amarr scented blood and threw their all into the second night. I should add at this point that although Iron Oxide had moved to Huola for the US TZ coverage, it was still inadequate to what the Amarr were fielding in that TZ. By the start of Tuesday's Euro TZ the system was hitting 50% contested.
But reships were arriving, more people were online, more allies were throwing in their lot with the Minmatar. The second night of defence turned it all around. We slaughtered the Amarr and the slaughter continued all through the weaker US TZ. Sometime on the Wednesday we started bumping close to stable. There were a few slight pushes over the next 24 hours but nothing over 10% for the rest of the week.
The Amarr stated they were taking the weekend off, but little pushes kept coming at us and we couldn't believe a word they said. Some in the Minmatar thought it was all over, but none of the veterans of Arzad did. On Sunday with few Amarr to fight, but a sizable Minmatar component in the system, the decision was taken to work on an Amarr POS. There were at least 10 hostile POSs in the system and there had been much argument over whether to try and remove them or not. There were too many to take more than one or two at a time. There were loads of empty moons and it was clear they were committed enough to simple put up another if we took one down, but it seemed prudent to at least try. We chose a small Amarr POS belonging to Terpene and with hindsight it was a mistake. We put it into reinforced mode but it had a long timer coming out at the most unfavourable time. Around 0400 on Tuesday morning.
The second Amarr main push started at 0100 on Monday morning of the second week. Like the first week it drove the system to 30% contested before the strong Euro TZ started plexing it back. Once again there were hiccups in the defence and again the system was only plexed back to around 19% by the end of the Euro TZ. This time the Amarr made an even stronger showing on the second night, partly due to the calling of a CTA to defend the POS coming out of reinforced mode that morning and additionally helped by a favourable dust modifier. By the time the Minmatar Euro TZ took control again, the system was at around 63% contested.
The Amarr gathered their strength for what they thought would be the final night, employing mercenaries, calling in favours from pirate entities and ex-militia members, begging the Caldari Militia to come and help. One last big push was all it needed they told themselves, never knowing that the campaign had already failed as the result of a simple observation on the previous night. A moment of poor judgement and a healthy dose of luck / un-luck depending on your POV. Sometimes the simplest of things can turn a campaign, the butterfly effect as an EvE promotion once talked about, can be so devastating. On that night a simple engagement had occurred at the end of the Euro TZ as the Amarr were testing to restart their contesting effort. By then they were in the habit of just letting the Euros deplex back the system during their strong TZ, but as the Minmatar fleet started to wane the Amarr would wake up and start testing. That night it was Biohazard who had the job of taking the initiative from the Minmatar. Around 160 people were in system, maybe 40 Minmatar and allies, 40 neutrals and 80 Amarr, but it was known that the Amarr were in the habit of leaving chars logged in while /afk. The Minmatar fleet was only about 25 actually active. We were ghost running a large with a single ship while the rest of us were in Sniper Cormorants already undocked waiting for the next small to spawn. The ghost runner reported two Amarr snipers warping in at range and the order was given to the Minmatar fleet to warp to the large at zero. Hardly had the fleet gone to warp when the intel report was modified. "Large gang of WT Merlins landing on large at zero, 30 plus."
Crap! We were in warp, we were in 25 Longbow fit Rail Cormorant with no tank about to land on 30 brawling Merlins. Change to Antimatter was the only order that could be given. We landed, the fight lasted all of 45 seconds and when the smoke cleared 20 brawling Merlins were dead and the rest had run, no losses on our side. WTF?
It always amazed me where the Amarr had got the numbers from. The next day a lot of pouring over KMs and employment histories from that fight was done. Remember how I said that the Amarr abused the crap out of the Buddy Invite and Power of Two programs?
We never looked back. After that we never feared the Amarr, we fought them outnumbered 3, 4 even 5 to 1 and slaughtered them. We stopped giving up when there were 150 of them in system to our 30. Sure it wasn't all plain sailing they still had the numbers and some successes, but the psychological war was won in that battle. There is more to the story, the campaign dragged on for another week and then the POSs had to be dealt with, but that was the turning point and that is where I end my story.
There has been conflicting reports as to how many ships died on both sides, how much isk was lost. Who won what etc. This campaign was about system contestation and never intended to be a PvP one, but it turned into the biggest PvP campaign in FW history. For 17 days Huola was at the centre of a great big red blob on the in game map. Friends, enemies and neutrals were drawn likes moths to the flame by that blob. Each day I would start work and sneak a look at the stats on Dotlan. I recorded the number of ships and pods that had died in the last 24 hours in Huola, in the CTRL-Q recruitment thread linked in my signature. All in all I recorded 22309 ship kills and 3841 pod kills during the period 7th to 18th July. I stopped recording at that point but one last significant push occurred during 21st/22nd and then there was significant skirmishing for the rest of the week.
I thank all for the good fights and killmails, I thanks all the allies, I thank my fellow Militia pilots. I hope nobody is offended for not getting a mention, my story is purely how I saw it play out. Aspects of that story may be slightly wrong and I'm know there are plenty of facts, important battles, skirmishes and accomplishments I have missed. Feel free to add a comment.
Most of all I'd like to say:

We beat ourselves.
Done.
You guys actually had little to do with it, main issue is that if I even told the truth on here it'd not be believed so.. yeah the story above will do. Amarr is going through a period of change right now, we've learned lots and if we are to adapt and bring down minmatar/gallente sov dominance we actually need to stop with the amarr being amarr BS.
Not to say GF's were not had in arzad but some of the assumptions and conclusions you've made up there are amazing, so much more amazing than what actually happened.... |

Pretty slanted view there major,
All in all I still can't believe CCP did not acknowledge 'Burn Huola' as a significant EVE incident. If even half the amount of ships that died in Huola had died in some nullsec system it would be all over the internet.
In the end though hats off the CCP for the patch that made it impossible for two week old toons to farm a medium and large plex. That really put the control of the warzone back int he hands of the pvp'ers of both sides instead of relying on the unreliable flipflopping of farmers and riding the wave they made.
We are seeing more and more actual PvP corporations take leading roles in either offensive or defensive campaigns on all sides. And to be honest isn't that what all the pvpers of all sides wanted in the first place? Certainly was an entertaining campaign and the first of its scale I have had the privilege of engaging in EVE side, I certainly have done the Dust grinding thing for a couple of weeks last year when the Amarr flip happened and we held about 98% of the districts in the WZ.
Still was a blast for the first few weeks, especially some of those Cruiser fights again Pandemic Legion...... other than that the WZ feels stale now.... too many Min pilots warping out of plexes and not fighting and too many times I have to warp out because I see a couple of ships in bound...... I miss the big ass blob and small gang fights.
Certainly wanted to test out some T2 in the WZ but I haven't been able to pin down any Wolf or Jag pilots down yet....
I'd certainly say Burn Huola is the reason I am continuing to sub..... I want to see more fights like that. |

1) XG was in system as the POS where being set up. I remember hopping on TS and expressing dismay at the 'Burn Huola' thread. Laughter and 'Spais!' Was the response. Templar kept tabs on Huola local for a week to gauge presence. It was also thought hitting Minmatar in the middle if tier 4 rather then tier 1 (bored and sitting in Huola) would maximize surprise.
2) The whole FW meta has changed. Farmers no longer plex your home system immediately as soon as you leave. Small groups can live in the war zone without 24/7 coverage. As long as the majority of Amarr bases in Egg and Minmatar bases in Huola I fear our warzone will be stale. |

Nice to read write-up Major Trant, shows some light on minmatar perspective i was wondering about. To that though I have this to add:
WINMATAR. went ballsdeep, with the intent to take a system. We YOLO'd in, with our full weight, For those who have flown with us know we're all about creating content. This is what we do, and it turned out to be legendary.
Seeing the last minmatar stronghold rise to 65% Has definately put a scar on the minmatar militia.
The fact AVNG leadership collapsed after causing so much attention on public media and then not pulling it's weight is a funny story to say the least. I've read many forum posts about their involvement but in reality all it's leadership did was causing major diplomatic problems within the Amarr / Caldari Militia coordination, on which I facedesked furiously. Coordination was our campaign's reoccurring problem that had it's impact on the push. For the Amarr I think AVNG's leadership collapse will be for the better, but time will tell.
BurnHuola has pauzed rightnow. Maybe it will restart tomorrow, or next week. Fact is Huola will never feel the same again, as it can be any day Amarr see an opening and launch a full scale assault, YOLO in, bigger & stronger than before.
To that day I look forward, as it may mean I finnaly can undock my tornado from Huola. Unless someone here wants to buy it?

It is interesting to see how far apart both sides can be even on the impression of situations where both were present to see. Thanks for the read, Major Trant.
From my understanding, a few things you are clearly not aware or chose to omit:
1. The operation, if I am correct, was to begin a month later after some preparations - instead there was a what the hell gung ho! 2. Activity in Amarr forces was acutally in decline amongst some of the players (24eme in particular). RL is just a *****. 3. Being backs against the wall, pushed the MinGall to use any and all resources in order to get the "win". 4. A number of brand new (I think you used the term "power of two") toons in 24th IC were created (most likely by Gall) solely to Awox. 5. There are plenty of "neutrals" in the four farthings (regions) that have alignment due to their isk making alts. I think this was in your favour. 6. Stats, no matter how accurate, do not present the full picture. (This is why killboard stats and participation values add up to so very little of the whole picture).
Many GF's were had and whilst it is accurate the ultimate desire was to flip you out of there (AVNG primary purpose) a lot of us were there simply to get the fun factor and watch explosions.
Look forward to being online again and staring down the barrel of them AC's and Howie's.

As long as they are willing to put alts in and dplex for the time they are not there. I see plenty of vigils defensive plexing ready to warp off if anything comes in all over the warzone. I'm not sure this is so great.
And I liked the huola campaign and took a few days off work to play. But when you have these big battles in a single system it seems like 45% of the time the enemy is outnumbered and won't fight so you sit in the plex alone and the other 45% of the time the reverse. Sure during the 10% of the time when fighting happens you get lots of kills but it's an on or off thing.
If your faction is currently outnumbered there isn't much you can do. Enter a plex and a huge group of enemies will of course push you out. Try to plex a system over and no one is there to fight. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the Huola campaign and am happy and thankful amarr decided to do the campaign. I had fun, but I also hope faction war doesn't entirely turn into you either are in one single system in the bigger blob or there is no fight to be had.

Yeah, cuz a smaller group can never defeat a larger group......... BLFOX is currently recruiting |

I didn't say that. But by and large the smaller side might leeroy one or 2 fleets trying and then we would have the wait. At least when I was on, I didn't see gallente/minmatar fighting outnumbered very often and certainly not for very long. Reading the op talk about minmatar winning fights 3,4 and 5 to 1, I am not sure what campaign he is talking about. But I wasn't always there so maybe I missed those fights.

Stalking Mantis wrote quite nice and tried to be objective but that one here... HAHAHAHAHA. Nothing else than propaganda.
Summary about Arzad: Minnies had 3 times the numbers first few weeks and were defending well. When they had to face even numbers they ran away. Plain and simple. Your science fiction fantasy stuff is funny.
Such obvious heavy handed lies aren't actually very clever. They are easily refuted by the cold hard facts found on killboards or by the reports of people on your own side. Check out FHP and I talking about Arzad in the infamous Burn Huola thread, somewhere in the mid-20s, for something nearer the truth. A lie this blatant cannot stand. Try going somewhere even vaguely near reality for your psych-ops to have any value, mate.
If you actually believe what you said and you were in the Arzad Campaign I strongly suggest seeking medical attention because your brain has malfunctioned spectacularly. |
