Capsuleers are well known amongst galactic society for being violence prone individuals with little or no empathy.
There are some who are the opposite - using their power and wealth to benefit others.
Or so it seems.
Organisations such as the Disciples of Ston, have numerous critics amongst the capsuleer community, mostly for the organisations political views, which are controversial to say the least, especially in Amarr space.
Numerous Amarrian religious organisations also appear to act in an altruistic manner, but what is the truth of their activities ? What secret agenda of religious conversion do they have ?
Gutter Press sent reporters to see what the people on the street had to say about capsuleer altruism.
"I heard that Cartel organisation, the one with that Khanid looking guy in it, are behind some of these activities", said a Minmatar resident of Pator. "I bet it's a front for slavery!"
"My mate was rescued from an exploding colonial habitat by this Amarr woman, with the face of an angel, he says. White gold hair, and piercing blue eyes, he said, and now he's gone and given up drinking and gambling, cos she gave him the Fear", said a Gallente mining contractor in Luminaire.
"I heard that one of the organisations, run by that guy with the funny name, Biko or something, is some kind of Sansha's Nation front organisation!", said one concerned Caldari scientist in New Caldari.
"That Caldari woman, who's building some kind of arcology, says it's all peaceful, but can you really trust a capsuleer?" asked an Amarr spaceship mechanic in Ashab.
"When I heard my cousin's ship had been attacked, I feared the worst, but then, I heard that a ship had rescued my cousin and taken him to a nearby station." said a Ni-Kunni trader in Madirmillire. "God bless that capsuleer"
"We were minding our own business when our habitat was attacked." said one Minmatar technician. "Then it turns out, the ship that attacked us, was rescuing our lifepods. I couldn't believe it. Then they gave us religious leaflets and set us down on the closest station."
"I have proof of Sansha's Nation involvement!" said one Gallente journalist from the Spaen constellation.
Most people on the street were highly suspicious of the motivations behind all the apparently altruistic organisations, and with seemingly good reason!
Is it impossible for any capsuleer organisation to shake off the reputation of capricious violence that has attached itself to the profession ?
Do some of these organisations have a darker side ?

I'm primarily a trader, and as a result I don't really shoot all that much. The only people I've killed are Gurista hnolku scum that would have done the same to innocent Caldari citizens.
As far as altruism goes, I've given a great deal of ISK (of which I get from selling the Gurista modules to capsuleers, with help from my associates) to various entities like CPF, Nurtura, Caldari Provisions etc. in Etsala and Orpana to improve and safeguard the lives of citizens in the lower-security systems. |

Yes. Everything in the Arcology is peaceful. "You let one of them go, but that's nothing new is it? Every now and then a little victim is allowed to escape; because she smiled, because he's got freckles, because they begged. And that's how you live with yourself. That's how you slaughter millions." Good report, Gutter Press!
Personally I don't believe any capsuleer is alturistic. Actually, I've seen little evidence to support that humans in general are alturistic.
Whatever noble cause a capsuleer claims to be furthering is nothing more than a vehicle for their own self-promotion. And as this article states, there are certainly sinister motivations behind these capsuleer organisations. For one, [DSTON] has enough "confiscated" weaponry to arm a private army. How many militants, marines and soldiers are housed between them and the Aurora Arcology, eh?
Worse still are so-called "white-knights" and CONCORD cheerleaders who claim they are protecting the weak, stupid and gullible, when really they're doing nothing more than massaging their own egos.

Many capsuleers organize or participate in humanitarian and charity projects all over the cluster; a fair number of these projects have been openly advertised on these very forums over the years. While it might be true that the odds of those capsuleers' motives being purely altruistic are rather slim, it does not mean that their actions are not helping people who need it.
To belittle or outright deny that these acts still have a positive effect on many, regardless of the private (or public) motivations of the capsuleer(s) in question, would be rather narrow-minded and short-sighted cognitive leap.
As an aside: Is there truly such a thing as a purely altruistic act? Given the typically-understood definition of the term, I would consider the answer to be a near-unequivocal "no," but perhaps that is a discussion best left for another time. |

altruism's all well and good but I prefer investment-altruism.
You never know, clean up that homeless person who scrapes by salvaging domestic drones off the scrapheap and selling them on, get them off their addiction and give them a decent bed to sleep in, and you might well end up with a damn good mechanic and a lucrative asset.
That's why I'm the largest minority shareholder in Second Start. You'd be amazed how big a profit a company can turn by serving as an education, rehabilitation and work agency for the destitute. I mean, my dividend is tiny relative to a capsuleer's professional income, but it still adds to the bottom line AND it's good work for people who need the help. Win-win! Precisely. Better to have an altruistic system that rewards individuals for their work, for their investment and for taking advantage of an opportunity offered, than altruistic individuals. I used to delude myself into thinking that I was some kind of selfless giver, interested only in what was best for everyone. But, somewhere in the back of my mind, the question was always there what I could get out of anything. I eventually embraced it, and I'll tell you that everything only got better for me after that.
I don't doubt that there truly altruistic individuals in capsules out there, I just know now that it's more expensive than it's really worth. Unscrupulous

There are no truly altruistic capsuleers anywhere because they help others and expect to feel good about themselves for doing so.

The conflicting set of instincts that promote both altruism and egotism is the same in both, at least.
Not like an average baseliner consciously expects to raise his group's chances of survival or his siblings' genes to propagate by helping the poor, anyway.
