So far, I've been mining Massive Scordite in 0.9-1.0, but now that I have my Osprey fixed up, I'm ready to look for better ore.
However, I'm having problems finding a system that has both the ores I'm looking for and good selling prices for the ores.
I've been using the map with security status colored and the market to attempt to find a suitable system. Is there a better way to go about this?

that website should help you find ore around systems near you without you having to get to them yourself.
honestly i would concern myself with fining ore, then use a hauler to move the refined minerals to get it to where i sell it. not both in the same location.
*doh, I broke my edited sig :/* *cries* this signature was lacking pink, I'll provide it for you. There. Looks better doesn't it? -Eris Fixed it for you. Oh, btw, yarr! ~kieron Didn't I tell you? The damsel moved in with me, we're having a great time. - Wrangler The damsel may not be distressed any more, but how many times does the informant have to be silenced before he gets the message? - Cortes

Thanks for the link.
I guess I'll have to get out there and see if I can find anywhere near a good roid belt to sell at. Sounds pretty painful to have to jump several gates away in a Badger for every load...

mine in a .5, get some of the 'better' ores like kernite and omber. Refine it at the 50% station and take the valuable stuff in a hauler once a week. You can fit ALOT of isogen in a tier 1 hauler and even MORE in a tier 2.

Gelre, how long did it take you to get enough cash to fully outfit your osprey?

As far as I know being able to refine your ore is the best way to go. Take some time to get Refining up to level 5, Refinery Efficiency up to about 3 and the ore processing (ie Veldspar Processing) up to level 2 for each of the ores you want to mine. This should, at a 50% station mean you have no wastage.
The next factor is getting your corporation standings up for the station you want to refine at. The higher your standing with the corporation, the less minerals they'll take out as their 'cut', hence improving your overall mineral count. Most stations have a base rate of 5%, although there are some around that charge only 3%.
Once you've perfected your refining skills it's all a matter of making up a quick spreadsheet that calculates what the different types of ore are worth depending on the current prices of their composite minerals.
If you need any help in game just evemail me, I'll be glad to help out.

Go Ninja minning in 0.0 - its dangerous, lucrative and good fun - get youself a coupel of jumps into 0.0, then warp into a belt mine rares fast as you can, once the rats come (20min), rabbit it the hell out of there, wait then go back - Thorax is a good ship to use.
Get a big secure containmer in a safespot away from the belts and then keep popping back to load it with rare ore from your cargo hold. For you next trip you gotta get back safetly to a station and get a hauler and get to the secure container and get the ore back to empire
Don't be dishearted when you get blown up two or three times. Just accpet your operation is high risk and high reward. In addition to rats there will be lots of real life pirates there who will love to turn you to toast and also Alliances who will view you as tresspassing . Just make sure your clone is upto date and die with dignity.

Omber is the currently the best ORE for 0.5+ space, so head down/to Minmatar space. Fine a nice quiet system with lots of 'roids and little macro activity.
With a decent Osprey, with decent skills you can make at least 3mill ISK per hour.
Drones are very helpful as well, I'd get it to at least Drone IV so you can have region specific scout drones to rat kill for you.
