Hey all
Im posting this because i can finally fly my retriever and let me say it is a lot better than the venture , my problem now is that i dont know what skills to train. I have been trying to decide whether to train my core ship skills first or whether to increase my mining capabilities.
Also i was just wondering what skills you would consider training in order to fit a good retriever/mackinaw, what would some of the core skills be?
Finally i was just wondering what is the most profitable ore to mine? (im in 0.5 space)

If you don't have drones, train up for some T1 light combat drones (Hobgoblins are good) and get your drone skill to at least 4 (You'll want at least 4 drones at a time to deal with asteroid belt rats until you get better drone skills). Also train Hull Upgrades IV so you can fit a Damage Control II.
After that go ahead and go for T2 strip miners, T2 mining laser upgrades, and then T2 mining crystals for the ore that you want to mine. Scordite tends to be a pretty good option for highsec. And get your mining barge and mining skills up as well since that will increase your yield and how much ore you can carry at a time. If it interests you, here's the fit I've been using, slightly modified to make it easier to fit with lower skills. (Note, you do NOT need to train anything in order to fit the rigs. You can just put them on your ship regardless of what the requirements say you need)

If you are planning to mine, refine and manufacture look for pyroxeres (Amarr & Caldari space) or plagioclase (Gallente & Minmatar space). Omber and Kernite are also excellent choices but bulky. These contain all hisec minerals in varying quantities. Disadvantage is the rocks are small so you will waste cycles unless you are paying attention. Scordite is the most efficient if you intend to sell the ore.
Retrievers don't have much tank - OK for hisec belt rats with a squadron of drones for defense but you need to add the CODE alliance to your contacts with terrible standing and run if you see them in local!
It's also worthwhile to keep your probe scanner on when travelling. You'll occasionally find anomalies with lowsec ores like Jaspet and Hemorphite. |

This Greedy Goblin post may give some insight on fitting the retriever with consideration to finding that balance between tank and mining yield:
