My motherboard burnt out once, took a month to get a new computer. After a petition, ccp refunded the lost time. "CCP Dolan is full of ****." - CCP Bettik

If I'm reading the average failure rate graph correctly ~15% of all of google's drives fail within 2 years, and ~35% within 5 years. And I would assume that google takes better care of their server hardware than your average home user (proper cooling, etc).
On the one hand, 15% is worryingly high that it could warrant keeping spare drives in stock. But on the other hand, drive technology is constantly improving and you will get a higher value for your money by buying as late as possible. |

A week for a HD replacement? That's sad.
Buy drive, install drive, reload os (or if you were smart, image your backup to the new drive), install eve, play. |

I've already put in a support ticket requesting my account be temporarily put on hold but I'm not sure that's the best thing to do or if CCP will even do it. I have 13 accounts in total. What is the best way to handle this? Can I put my accounts on hold or am I just screwed on time I've paid for? The fact you have 13 accounts and don't have a single way of accessing them in the event of a hard drive failure means you deserve everything you get.

This discussion doesn't have to be about petitions for help. It can be about possibilities for the future.
Cue the guy who will tell us all how putting subs on hold is like, totally dumbing down the game. Or a phone/web tool for management of training queues would also work. To be honest I'm surprised they don't already have that.
John Lander was looking into that and working on it before he left CCP, I have no idea what's happening now though. |

I would wager those are also always on server cluster array drives too. Not a less than a year old laptop that is off more often than its on. Awesome self-quote in 3... 2... 1... Ok, GO!

Wait, so, you spent all of your "disposable income", on 12 plexes, so now you can't buy a new drive, plus you pay for 13 accounts, and you are looking for a new "home game?"
Yeah, sure bud, something tells me you aren't going anywhere, whether CCP does anything for you or not. |

Anyone who tells you it will take a week to replace a hard drive is ripping you off, it's a few hours work, tops.
Buy new HD, boot up with your OS DVD in drive and install OS in around 30-40 mins.
Install EvE, symlink your install if needed for multiple clients, or install your multibox software.
Start playing.
Restore My Documents etc from your backup during first downtime....you did back up didn't you?
The only lengthy time will be all the OS updates you will need to install, but this can be done when not playing.
If you're smart enough to play Eve you're clued up enough to put a hard drive in.
Total time 3 hours max! |

Frequent spin down / spin up cycles increase the failure rate. And laptops often have pretty aggressive power saving settings making the problem even worse. |

May I join the cacophony of people in shouting YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE HERE WHEN YOU GET BACK!!! Unless, of course, you're gone an inordinate amount of time, and the descendents of the present CCP confederation decide to use all that hard-won hardware for something a bit more humanitarian, like a Center for the Prevention of Fur Seal Clubbing. Then, I'd say you're screwed, unless you're a fur seal. I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility toward every form of tyranny over the mind of man.-á |
