Seems like a good rule, especially if you're a weakling or fool that would rage quit on the game if you encountered an unfortunate accident on your pricey ship.
How do you determine if you're flying something you can't afford to lose? Is it:
1. % of replacement cost to your overall wallet 2. % of replacement cost to your monthly income stream 3. A comparison of long-term benefits to expected costs (occasional ship lose -"cost of doing business") 4. Whether you downgrade your ship type if you lose your current ship 5. If you don't flake out and continue playing, you can afford any ship loss ("It's just a game!) |

imho none of the above, closest is 5
Is it going to cause you problems if you lose the ship? Are you going to sit there saying 'what the hell do I do now?' Is it going to cause you to not log in for days because you don't know how you're going to pick yourself up without that ship?
If yes to any of those, you can't afford to lose it |

If you have a replacement ship fully fit and ready to undock in your hangar, you are good.

To me it's 1. Just think how long it would take you to get said ship back in case it's lost. If it's longer than you'd like, then consider downgrading to something cheaper.

"How much sh!t my corpies will have to kill to compensate for my bling should I lose it?" And that's why I fly cheap frigs and thrashers, I don't wanna put too much pressure on them :) Invalid signature format |

If that's how you think, stay out of PVP and focus on making ISK - you'll find it much more enjoyable. |

I didn't offer my opinion. I read the "golden rule" and was curious how you people are interpreting it. |

If I undock it, it is lost. Maybe I can't afford to immediately replace it should it die, but I've already come to terms with that. www.ensignyooch.wordpress.com

A good adage would be "moderation in all things, including moderation". I don't waste my ships. I buy them for a specific purpose, which can be solo or fleet PVP. In that case I deem the ship lost the moment I bought it. I don't fit stupidly expensive nor do I add ships to fleets that simply have no place there.
I spend more ISK on ships that tie in well with my skills. For example, I'd use a Cynabal for solo- or small gang PVP but I wouldn't take it out on a gung-ho T1 cruiser roam. A normal T1 or perhaps Faction cruiser would be more fitting for the odds I would typically predict in that context. Then again, I do admit I fly somewhat shinier when I just made a good chunck of ISK.
I pretty much prevent my wallet from getting lower then X (an arbitrary number I sort of tie to my SP, aka my combat potential), and do whatever with the ISK that's left. Sometimes that's 10 Cruiser roams, another time it might be a BS for a massive siege fleet. I just don't buy ships that I don't need or can barely fly. |

I read it more as a cautionary guideline that came about because there are mechanics in Eve that enable you to lose a lot of your assets in a very short amount of time. If you are prepared for it, whether that's because you have a replacement on standby, or you've run the numbers for risk vs. reward, or you are just completely willing to shrug it off and re-start with one trit and a noobship, then that's when you can 'afford to lose it'. |

Replacement cost of my medical clone is all that matters to me. Currently that's 31.5 million ISK.
If I needed ISK to cover that before undocking, I'd buy a PLEX for cash and sell it for ISK.
I of course keep a jumpclone at every major trade hub. |

For the other vets let's be honest I myself have so many old ships and mods laying around its hard to keep track of. The most basic point is if you are able to get yourself back to the position you were before losing the ship you are fine for newer players it is harder then older players who often have more Isk ships and assets. Always willing to help all you have to do is ask, though if your in the other fleet I may not help the way you want. Just a heads up. Pub Channel: Lost Souls Trading Post |
