My 10 year old son announced to me last night he wants to play eve. He currently plays minecraft and he picks up games really quick. He is already the encyclopedia of minecraft. Is 10 too young to get him started or has anyone else got youngish kids playing eve. It would be nice to play with him as I hate Minecraft with a passion and probable would help his learning. |

Let him play.
He's a ten year old and a product of the instant gratification generation. He'll be bored in a hour and go play something else.

There are a couple of well known players that allow their children to play, while they supervise them.
Is 10 too young?
In my opinion yes. This is a game where people will assume he is adult (I don't know why we do that) and will treat him as though he is.
Clearly that isn't the case and if you aren't going to supervise his play by sitting right along side him, then this is not a game he should be playing. Come Win At Eve - Join The Vendunari

IIRC in the last EVE player census poll the average age of the playerbase was 27 years old. I personally started playing when I was.. 15 or 16.
But yes I concur, this isn't a game for 10 year olds, if only for the reason that we as players assume everyone is an adult or nearly an adult (for good reason IMHO) and use rather adult language and generally don't value other people's feelngs too highly. Like you said unless you're going to supervise the kids playtime 24/7 I wouldn't let him play. |

I had my 12 year play EvE for a while, gave him his own account.
3 months later he lost interest, game was too slow and he had to bust his ass off to get ships...that he lost within hours..
Imo, It was a good lesson for him |

Your son playing EvE now at 10 years old is the equivalent of an MBA at 18. If he gets hooked, he might just be rich by the time he is old enough to own stuff.

Squats and oats man. All you need to go from zero to hero. Also make sure you don't introduce him to the wonderful world of afk mining or suicide ganking. Unless you want him to curse faster than jita alts .01iskers all of their orders go ahead. |

10 ? My 5 year old wants to play EvE. All I had to do was Tell her that Daddy doesn't want her to play this game just yet. So I kick back and play Minecraft with her on the 360 or a good race car game. And as for learning new words, Kids these day pick up so much even from daycare it can be frighting sometimes. At 10 I'm sure I'll be letting her experience online games so long as I'm there with her bashing in skulls or blowing up starships. Bonus for me is I have a 3 year old as well (also a girl). I have alot of fun to look forward to..

To be honest - I don't think it's a very good idea at all. This game may have a "teen" rating but a few hours of playing EVE will show you that a vast majority of EVE players have no issue with broadcasting material that is is no way "child friendly" in very open channels - Simply join the CCP created channel "mining" (where one would assume that topics related to "mining" would be discussed) and within one hour you will be introduced to a lot of "content" that is in no way something that a ten year old should be part of.
There are plenty of games out there for players that are still children, and I don't feel that EVE is one of them. |

Eve's mechanics are complex, but a 10 year old might understand a lot of them. I wouldn't expose my child to an online community at that age though. Perhaps under supervision? |

It would have to be very close supervision. Personally, I really wish CCP would just take steps to make sure that only whatever the county of origin of the player considered an "adult" was even allowed to play in the first place. Think of the reduced load on the GM's that a change like this would result in - from this point on a support ticket for "offensive language" could just result in a system response of "HTFU and use the block feature" :-) |

Better to learn now in a video game than when he tries to buy a house IRL.

Thanks for the input. Hes not a couch potato and is involved in sorts etc. Maybe might just let him watch and listen in for a while so he knows what to expect. Obviously there is some adult content but I hope....well I know he is mature enough to either ignore it. If he were to start playing i wouldn't expose him to pvp. Mainly just carebeaing up in high sec mining and doing missions. |
