Many know the agony of loss, few know the thrill of victory. Lucky are they who know only loss, for victory is bittersweet. Time is victory's enemy, or rather victory is time's prey. Time lurks in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to strike. Once you have tasted victory, nothing else suffices. This is the pit of despair I now inhabit.
Fountain, a region I had not visited for ages. However I find myself here again. Staring out into space, I wonder if I'll encounter the souls of the forsaken. Long ago I commanded a fleet here, won many battles, crushed my enemies, and rejoiced with my comrades. Time however was waiting.
Friends turned into enemies, betrayal became commonplace. Thousands died under my command, there was little I could do. My ship was ablaze, sailing out of control, caught in the gravity of a nearby moon. In those last few seconds, as my ship accelerated towards the moons surface, my mind was full of regret. What would I tell my comrades? Surely, they shall all blame me.
And then, nothing. Those who have died and been reborn know the sensation of ôtransitö. My very essence traveled across the universe in search of its new host. These few moments seem to last for all of eternity, for time no longer has meaning. No thoughts, no pain, no pleasure, true nothingness. Then, suddenly, your eyes open and you are you once more.
However none of my comrades awoke from their slumber. As I looked around the clone chamber, their lifeless bodies stared blankly into space. Their cryo tubes never opened, I learned later that a nearby star had gone nova just before the battle took place. Somehow this caused their ôessenceö to be forever lost in the void. Their clones are still there to this day, mindlessly starring into oblivion.
I can feel them here, in this horrid place. The souls of the forsaken call to me. I may deserve their fate, yet i do not wish to share it. I can only hope that in my travels I can redeem myself, and that their souls can finally rest.

Personally, I do not experience any sensation of time passing between death and recloning; it is practically instantaneous.
Anyway, more to the point - there is no mythical "essence" involved here. What gets transported is just the scan sent over FTL. If FTL comms were disrupted badly enough to kill the signal, the people are not "lost in the void", they are just regular dead.
I am sorry for your loss.
