Where have all the great games gone? I was browsing Steam, looking for something new to buy and didn't really see anything I felt like playing. There's a whole pile of rubbish up there at -ú2.99 but nothing in the AAA category.
In the past we've had:
Half Life Supreme Commander Civilisation Crysis Mass Effect Total War Bioshock
, and a few others. But over the last couple of years nothing has really hit the spot. Got any recommendations for Eve downtime? |

Yea I played Infinite already a while back. Not as good as 1 and 2 in my humble opinion but ah well. Oh Starcarft: Heart of the Swarm was good. Not sure when the third instalment is due. |

So, it looks like you're big on sci-fi.
It's a bit cheesy, but X-Com: Enemy Within I thoroughly enjoyed. You may have to get used to turn-based combat instead of RTS. It's probably the closest thing to AAA that I'd recommend. Honestly, since Mass Effect, most AAA has been flashy trash.
If you want something even more think-y than that, Defense Grid is still my favorite Tower Defense game, and a great time-sink (DG2 is coming out late Q3 or early Q4 as well).
Bastion is another amazing game, sharing a trait with Defense Grid that some devs are seemingly starting to bank on: a kickass narrator (sorry, Aura...you just don't match Mr. Gravel-and-cigars from Bastion).
Then again, if you want to get that EVE feeling of ultimate despair, desolation and worthlessness, ultimately nothing more than a tiny cog in an uncaring and hateful world, there's always Papers, Please. Only thing it lacks is...no, no, goons will try to gank you there, too. oaramos: |oh-WAR-uh-mohs| n. GÇö-áTerm given to early Caldarian wormhole explorers. Im optimistically waiting for Fallout 4 ; I think if they can make it anywhere near as good as Fallout 3, with newer, better combat and graphics, that could be the best console game I ever play.
For me, since I no longer have an Xbox and my computer is crap, I only play games with my sisters when I go to visit them. And they only have MInecraft, so what I play are those Xbox Live Arcade games. Ive got Doom 1 & 2, Quake Arena, Sonic, Mortal Kombat, and a bunch of other stuff. Doom is really really fun. I'd be on this myself...if I didn't have a dirty Mac (haters gonna hate).
FTL is another great time-sink, but I'd only recommend it if you knew you enjoyed toying with the RNG wholady, along with games like The Binding of Isaac.
I had a bit of fun with the Wargame series (current iteration: Red Dragon; previously Airland Battle), but the community, frankly, puts the Team Fortress bads to shame. They're the RTS equivalent of CoD teens, and the single player skirmish mode is so poorly designed that it's difficult to recommend spending money on.
But we're beginning to touch on a theme here. During spells of AAA fatigue, it's sometimes fun to go back to the classics. It's refreshing, at times, to play a game where you're never worried about your favorite toon or ship or whathaveyou nerfed in the coming months, or drawing a bad PUG, and just enjoying the scenery and the script for what they are. Surely there's some classic, even a previous AAA title perhaps, that you missed out on for whatever reason. The original Max Payne had a charm to it that surpassed what would now be its glaring flaws (except the nightmare section. The person who designed that is a mad genius, though I still wish upon him weeks of bad wi-fi and tasteless leftovers).
Then again, I'm often accused of being anti-social, so take that last paragraph/recommendation with a grain of salt. oaramos: |oh-WAR-uh-mohs| n. You're looking into AAA games, you should really look below that.
"great" games: Eve-Online South Park: The Stick of truth DoTA 2 (Wanna play!? :) ) The Walking dead (Season One and Two!) The Wolf Among Us XCom: Enemy Unknown (and all DLCs) Fallout: New Vegas (search net for mods :) )
"great" Indie games: FTL Plague Inc Bastion Prison Architect Binding of Issac Mark of the Ninja Robocraft (Like Legos? Like World of Tanks? Likes lots and lots of guns? Space pewpew? All in one!)

Lately the games I've been playing and have enjoyed have been,
Fable: The lost Chapters, If you get it one Steam there's a collector edition, but that is waay overpriced for a OG xbox game.
FTL has been addicting, and I can play it in tandem with EVE. =P Just pause whenever you're busy.
Bioshock, I dunno how many times I've replayed this series, I love it.
Darksouls, and Darksouls 2, If you want a really good PVE experience go for DsK, if you want a good PvP experience go for DsK2
Megaman Legends 1 and 2: MLone was the first game I completed when I was a kid, put the current hard copies on Ebay are rather expensive. =(
Tombaa 2, I love this game, if you can get it somehow, do it. It's rare however and kinda expensive. =\ I have one still though! (V)whahahaha.
DCS World is a great sim game, nothing says stress relief like blowing stuff up in a A-10. It's a rough start though, you literally need to know how to fly a real A-10 to play the game. But once you get it, it's amazingly fun,
I also play some shooters as a quick mindless sorta fun, Insurgency, Arma, and such are great fun.
Also any Bethesda games, like Elder Scrolls and Fallout, the mod support for those games is amazing, once you get a bunch of mods the entire game is different and it's like you're playing something new. Psychotic Monk for CSM9

If you dont mind old games i would suggest Heroes of Might and Magic 3 (yes the third one, even if there is several after it). Great when you just need to kill some time, and its entertaining enough to last for years (played it on and off when bored for about 10 years). Wow i feel old...
The Thief series is also a lot of fun, enjoyed those quite a bit but i have not tried the newest one.
The Witcher (the first one, the second one does not like my computer) is another great game that i have replayed a couple of times over the years. Phoibe Enterprises official recruitment thread The Eve Reader - -áAudio Recordings of Eve Chronicles

I can't like this post enough. A-10 is great and all but I still like mah Su-25 Frogfoot. The huey is great fun too. DCS has the best helicopter flight model I have ever played with.

I thoroughly enjoyed SupCom and FA. Haven't played 2, and probably won't, because...it's bad, according to 90% of everything I've read/seen on it.
I'll second KSP. It's...good, for the moment, and you can do a lot of stuff with it where it's at now, but without mods, there's just a lot of B.S. that the game gets away with (e.g. the vanilla aeronautics lift v drag mechanics are hilaribad; you need Ferram Aerospace to make that work; Kerbal Attachment makes mods any place other than the launch pad possible; so on). By the time one gets the mods set up to an acceptable level, the game gets really bogged down. But it has a great deal of potential, and I'm keeping an eye on it to see how it develops. Certainly, I have more hope for it than Star Jita Scam Citizen.
The other thing about KSP is it really gets you really jaded about sci-fi spaceflight models and ship design. oaramos: |oh-WAR-uh-mohs| n. GÇö-áTerm given to early Caldarian wormhole explorers.
