Don't try to "get good" before working towards your preferred playstyle.
Sitting in highsec and running missions constantly while you train the skills you think you need for PvP will only kill the game for you. You don't see the miners sitting in station while they skill for their Hulk, they're out there learning their roids in a Venture - get out there and learn...

They should read this (particularly the bottom bit). They should also read this. Perhaps also, this.
They are now ready to EvE, and evolve in game, without tear or complaint.

Go to lowsec within the first week and get blown up, then proceed with whatever else.
This, at the very least, will help them realize that getting blown up is a) normal and b) not the end of the world. |

Without question, I'd say this : play your own game.
Find what you like to do and have fun doing, and do it, regardless of whether someone calls you a carebear, scrub, noob or whatever. This isn't the kind of game where you start at A, move on to B, then C, then you sit back and lord over the noobs. The most incredible and notorious eve events and personalities are not in the tutorials.
There's a ton of ways to play and enjoy new eden - find out what you enjoy and keeps you logging in, and ignore the haters, because no matter what you're doing in this game, there's plenty of other capsuleers who think you're doing it wrong.

Some really good pieces of advice in here. Thanx guys.
Note edited the OP a bit for another question. Strength isnt measured in numbers but in force of will. For if one motived willful individual stands many will fall around him that are weak.

Lies.
Almost as toxic a lie as "Low sec space=instadeath"
Sure, if you wander into a gatecamp it's instadeath, but there are vast, VAST areas of Low Sec that are practically uninhabited.
Going into Wormhole space in your little T1 frigate is awesome. As long as you have a cloak, probe, and remember to bookmark your damn entrance.
Just be careful, don't talk in local, and don't try to take on the Sleepers in your scan frig.

Doesn't make sense to me, if you're not going to trust anyone, you have already locked yourself out of the possibility of trusting someone else.

Never ever go to lowsec unless you're just travelling and know a lot about the game's geography and active places. You'll just die for no reason. Nullsec is fine though, provided you have the standings. |

Being on fire while under fire and lighting someone else on fire can be lots of fun. Also, fire is just plain fun.
To be more concise, it's not a bad thing to get your ship blown up, just try to learn from it when it happens. Ask the pilot who violenced you for advice on how to not get exploded next time. They may very well give you some good tips. |

In response to the edit:
Don't train for mining. Don't do it dude. You're gonna hate it and it's gonna get you nowhere. You're gonna waste those SP that could be better spent training for assault frigates and as a result, you're gonna have a 0-30 killboard before you discover you're actually a pretty good pvp'er, and that won't happen for a year after you start playing the game. Then you're gonna have some catching up to do. GÇ£Some capsuleers claim that ECM is 'dishonorable' and 'unfair'. Jam those ones first, and kill them last.GÇ¥ - Jirai 'Fatal' Laitanen, Pithum Nullifier Training Manual c. YC104 |
