A tough one for me, but I would have to say it's my grandfather.
A child of the depression, planning on college then sent to fly B-24s in WW2. The cheapest bombers there were, shrapnel would go in one side and right out the other, he flew over 1000 hours and over 400 combat hours in them. He flew missions lasting over ten hours with no fighter support against the fastest fighters in the world and when he was on the ground he'd watch the flights get back and count the planes to see which friends didn't make it back. After the war he settled in the area where Disneyland would be built and took his new family and his daughters to tour the park with Walt Disney. He did what he loved, became a professional photographer for years, retired a couple times, and worked various jobs as the fancy struck him into his 80s. He is still alive today at the ripe old age of 96, doing crosswords and visiting family to keep his mind sharp.
He's my idol for those reasons and many others. So, who is it that's affected your life in a positive way, someone you look up to? Who is your idol? |

My dad. I used to name everything I owned 'George'. My books, my sandals, my tshirts, chickens, other people's dogs, cereal boxes.. they were all George. I saw him in everything, and honestly I still do.
In terms of celebrities I've always looked up to Dr. Hawking.

Another idol of mine is Beck Weathers. I always have my copy of Left For Dead on me (I sort of consider it to be as important as my phone). This book is marked up everywhere and its spine gave out a while back.
I always go through it before a solo climb. Not really for superstition or to build up some false confidence of survival.. but because it reminds me about how fragile we are. I have a tendency to forget that.. as stupid as it sounds, and that is a very dangerous thing on a climb.
And as for classically trained professional adult film entertainers.. I might possibly have a very slight crush on James Deen (edit: notice the double 'e'). That's not the same as an idol is it? ~ Please support a yellow jumpsuit for me (and everyone else). Thank you! ~ |

Very difficult for me.
I have no single idol, more a random list.
My father is an inspiration to me and the man who taught me a great many things. Not least he is the man who after i was shot got me such a shouting at when i was feeling sorry for myself and pushed me to pursue my current employment.
Then there's certain members of my historical family who i look up to. This served me well in university. Any high bred toff who talks down to me, well I have a family line of murdering bastards just as long as you, and we were better at it, so dont you dare look down your nose at me you chinless feck.
After that I deeply admire a number of 18th and 19th century figures, notable explorers, engineers, inventors, soldiers, writers and travelers who were sometimes the same person. Reading about their travels and adventures into the unknown are fascinating, when you think about that they had absolutely no idea what the hell they'd find or even if they'd come back.
Finally a number of people I met during my military service. Especially one of my instructors in officer school. He taught me more in a short time about philosophy and how to look and think about the world than my entire education rolled up. He was my John Keating a la Dead Poets Society without the chair standing or sacking that followed. "I think you should buy a new Mayan calendar. Mine has muscle cars on it." --áKenneth O'Hara

Didn't know you were climbing. I would really love to do it, but there a no mountains in Denmark. The tallest point here is a freaking bridge.
Derrick. I sort of envy you. I never get to know any of my grandfathers as both of them died before I was born. So all the stereotypical things you do with your grandfather is something I have never experienced.
I respect my father and appreciate what he has done for my sister and I. Our well being has always been high priority for him. But I would not call him my idol as he spent too much time on work rather than on my sister and I.
I think I'm in the same boat as Graygor. I don't really have some specific idols, but rather just some people I respect. When I was younger there was one of my friends I looked up to. He was 4 years older than me, but we were still best friends. I enjoyed playing with the big boys and he had all sorts of cool stuff. Now that we got older, I see us more as equal. The 4 year age difference doesn't really matter anymore.

Seriously clich+¬ed internet answer, but... Carl Sagan. When my dad purchased our family's first VCR, it came with a 3-pack of blank cassettes. The first thing he ever recorded was the entire Cosmos series on PBS, and I can't begin to count the times I watched it. In terms of igniting my imagination and giving me an idea of what I could do with my life, nothing else inspired me nearly as much. After receiving Pale Blue Dot (coffee table format) as a birthday gift some years later, I came to see life as an opportunity to improve the condition of our species, and maybe our long-term prospects for survival.
...and here I am playing a video game in my free time. |
