I have always subscribed to the notion that for a long-point 'ceptor, their best tank was high speed and low signature. I've flown 'Ceptors on and off for a number of years, and of all the ones I've lost, no amount of EHP increase would have saved me; either I get caught and die or I don't and live.
With this in mind, why are MSE Crows and Maledictions so common? I understand that they will have considerably more EHP than a similar 'ceptor without an MSE, but that EHP comes at the expense of lower speed and higher signature. It's almost as if you're expecting to get caught, in which case you're almost certainly dead regardless of EHP.
Am I missing a circumstance, or circumstances, where long-point 'ceptors commonly get caught and live because they had a bigger EHP buffer?
(For reference, I have Interceptors V, so my Crow and Malediction fits have signatures below 80, T2 point ranges of 30km and speeds near or above 5km/s before heat, links, implants, etc.) Reading Comprehension: a skill so important it deserves it's own skillbook.

Does a MSE make a ship slower?
I don't fly one but possibly there good for newbies learning to fly and keep transversal up, or possibly for large fleet engagements where there is possibility of being Smartbombed, or bombed?

The MSE itself does not, but swapping out a speed mod for a fitting mod, which the MSE requires, does. Reading Comprehension: a skill so important it deserves it's own skillbook.

You don't need to put on fitting mods to fit a mse. The extra ehp is so once you land initial tackle you live long enough for heavy tackle or dps to do it's thing. In a fleet fight you may have more to worry about than just who you are pointing. |

Untanked inties are generally just free kills for the first competent gang to come along, MSE Ceptors can get decent reps off a shield logi and can tank quite well in combination with there high speed and low sig.

I always thought a turret tracking disruptor would be more valuable, although your skills have to be high to avoid cap concerns. |

Tracking disruptor mitigates damage from a single ship using a specific weapon system
MSE mitigates damage from everything shooting at you regardless of what they're using. |

..and if you are with a gang catching ratters etc, and your crow takes fire from the rats you will be able to stay on the field much longer, or at least long enough to escape before the rats blap you. I would never not put mse on a crow.
Now maledictions...I like my small anc repper just fine. |
