Question regarding the orbit data (yes, I know the EVE planets don't actually orbit, but bear with me):
Let's take a planet as an example.
- The SDE has the planet's current (and forever) position.
- The SDE has the planet's orbit radius.
- The SDE has the planet's orbit eccentricity. (By definition, a planet in orbit has its star at one focus, and the eccentricity defines the position of the second focus. We can assume the orbit radius is the average orbital distance, but it really doesn't matter since all EVE planet orbits are insanely circular. So in practice, we can just consider the orbit a circle with radius and a center at 0.)
What I can't seem to find is the orbital inclination. If we assume the orbit is circular, we have two points: The planet's current position, the inverse of the planet's current position, and the center (always at 0,0,0). From that we can define a sphere, but we need a third point to define the great circle on that sphere which represents the orbit.
For example, the orbit that crosses the Y-axis at x=0 would be a different orbit than one that croses the Y-axis at a non-zero value. It'd have a different inclination.
Is this data available anywhere in the data export? It's in game, since the client renders orbits, but I can't seem to puzzle out where that's coming from!

Do any orbits actually have an inclination? I can't remember seeing anything like it in game... Various projects I enjoy putting my free time into: http://zkillboard.com | http://evewho.com | http://eve-kill.net | http://evechatter.com | http://skillq.net |

I've seen planets in the map that have an inclined orbit so they do exist though rare. One I know about is Ordian with at least 3 off plain planets. The planets themselves are close to the same plain but the orbits are not with Ordian V being 60 Degrees or better it looks like. Finds camping stations from the inside much easier. I don't see anything specific in the database, the only thing I can think of would be a plane defined by the star, universal origin, and the planet. |
