80% of the teams go for drone setups.
I dont understand why smartbombs are not used as a counter. 2-4 smartbombs on 2 battleships will clear waves of drones in a single pulse, and force enemy to switch to sentries, which can be bombed/sniped easily... how is this not used..?? |

I recall a commentator saying some have. One team killed off their own rep drones while using it...doh.
Think a kronos yesterday too did as well. It was last man left alive and seemed to be trying to run out the click. It dropped before timer run out.

Yesterday someone did: Nulli vs Hydra
Ducan's comment on failheap
Quote:Armageddon and Golem had smartbombs, we brought all our damage in drones, we couldn't kill anything before we lost our drones and VNIs don't really have spares. Only option at that point was to put out rep drones on the oneiros and turtle for 10 minutes. It didn't tank, the match is clean up after that for them. No sense wasting time at that point so we left the arena. Sometimes you lose to a hard counter, they brought a clever setup. I think that was our first loss to a team that wasn't PL in 4 alliance tournaments.
Well played Nulli = )

Smart Bombs are without any doubt the best counter to prevent this tounement trend of using drones to apply damage and are also the best counter to destroy the tinker setups relying on remote reppings with drone repair assistance.
Last year when I was in the CVA AT Team, when fighting Dark Side Setup we lost the match due to the fact that our Torpedo Fleet typhoons weren't fitted with smart bombs but with 2 neuts instead. Even neuting the Legion we weren't able to destroy the 2nd Dominix even if he fall to 16% structure.
Nulli yesterday obliterated the Hydra drone swarm with smart bombs. Wondering what would be the outcome if instead of mobile drones people will start using sentrys, effectivelly preventing the tinker setups of smart bombing the drones. |

Sentries aren't unbeatable, with the jump beacon you could jump close to them and negate a lot of DPS via orbiting something while you smartbomb each pack of them. Assuming the Sentry gang was smart and didn't dropped them all close together. So you either kill the Sentry packs one by one or force them to use mobile drones, which itself is a bad idea vs lots of smartbombs.
Using a jump beacon is risky but with a tinker you should have enough time to do it right. Except you face PL's, no logi, high DPS, high alpha setup, you have to react fast against that and use the jump beacon asap before you lose to many ships. "It's easy to speak for the silent majority. simple answer to this is that most BS teams so far have not been able to sacrifice highslots for smart bombs because the battleships with these utility highs. Commandship teams have been filled with links.
And lets face the facts here it takes a long time to kill Gila & worm drones really and these are the most common ships. Gilas also have the choice to bring even more drones in thier cargo bay, so its really just an endless cycle of stuff coming at you.

Quote: 2-4 smartbombs on 2 battleships will clear waves of drones in a single pulse, This is amazingly incorrect. T2 Ogres require 20 (technically, 18 if you perfectly mix damage type) smartbombs to clear, augmented and Geckos take many, many more. Some teams aren't dropping many, if any, light or medium drones, not including gilas, where T2 hammerheads take above 40 smartbombs to clear.
This can still be a POTENTIALLY viable long term strategy, but with not all teams favoring drones and not all setups favoring multiple battleships (even the tinkers) finding space for the 10-15 smartbombs needed to make it a FAST drone clearing strategy is an extraordinarily hard choice to make, much more so than "2 smartbombs on 2 BS" would be (while I'm at it, 8 minimum is the right number to clear 'aug' valks, so that'd be the upper end of your given range just to clear the mediums).
If you augment the damage with other damage not vulnerable to massed smartbombs (read: guns) you can clear even geckos reasonably quickly, but it requires a really, really significant commitment that may leave you vulnerable to other setups.
I don't doubt most of the remaining teams have already been considering such setups.
edit: to be clear those numbers reflect the typical HP bonused drones of the VNI, Ishtar, Vexor, etc., not the standard drones off, say, a hyperion (as clearly most teams are relying on unbonused heavy drones out of a hyperion) |
