I'm mining a rock, with my 2 drones already out of the bay and orbiting my ship, set to aggressive. Some rats appear. When they get in range and start attacking me my drones do nothing. So I target the rats and lock on, and click Engage Target... and they start attacking the asteroid. So I make them stop, and then select Engage Target again. Success!
What is the correct process to make drones attack my attackers? I assumed setting them to aggressive would do that but it seems not. |

Drones are notorious for being awkward little sods. However, I expect what happened here is that when the rats first engaged you they were outside your drone control range. If that's the case your drones would ignore them. Later, when you manually targeted the rats they had moved closer, so the drones responded.
Don't rely totally on aggressive drones for defense, and if you want them to be as effective as possible you may want to look at the skills to increase their range.
Attacking the roid rather than the rats is something we have all done. Either that or attacking the rats with mining drones ...
What you may want to do is set some handy keys for switching targets, I find it easier than clicking between targets when you have several. Z for "select next target" and X for "select previous target" work for me. Assist and Agressive don't always work, CCP says this is intended to bother botters and afkers, I say it's a bug. Sometimes strange behaviour of drones is because of the security setting (mostly with assist) so maybe you try setting it to red. If you don't know where to find it, this is most likely working as intended because they don't tell you about this. It's the green/orange/red little icon top left of your ship status window (shield/armor/cap status and that.). |

Relevant One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia |

Okay, 2 things here:
1. Aggressive settings means that drones auto aggress an enemy if they are idling around you already when the initial aggression from a NPC happens.
So if you release them after the initial aggression, nothing will happen. If the NPC hasn't actually agressed you, nothing will happen.
2. You already have an asteroid locked and as your active target, after you target anything else, it's just added to the list of your locked targets, you have to manually make it your active target before you give the engage command on the drones. Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy

Don't mess with the security setting, unless you know what you are doing and want to PVP. This has nothing to do with drones attacking NPC rats! As you are a miner, I would recommend leaving your security setting to green always. |

If the npcs aggress you outside of your drone control range your drones will not respond even if set to aggressive. Then when they move in closer, your drones will continue to sit there like dumb rocks. www.ensignyooch.wordpress.com

sidenote for OP: using the key commands for drones is much faster and easier than selecting each command from a menu. "F" - attack current target "shift + R" - return to drone bay "alt + shift + R" - return and orbit my ship All default key commands can be found from the escape menu (esc -> shortcuts)
