The tutorials will give you instructions on how to make your ship move.
The tutorials are there for a reason.

Double-click in the direction you want to go (you have to pan your camera around to do this).
Also... just so you know... the reason the system works this way is because the server receives, processes, and sends each command (or series of commands) you make once per second (or 1hz). This is what allows everyone to exist in a single shard universe and take part in fights with absurd amounts of people.
For reference... most first person shooter and flight simulator games have a refresh rate that is in the miliseconds. This is why those servers can only handle an extremely finite amount of people without lagging out. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.

Usually when you move in EVE you'll move towards an object with 'approach' or 'keep at range' or orbit it. There are some more advanced tactics, especially for PVP, which will have you actually click towards your heading. It's not a very precise art and I can't remember the last time I used it. |

Well, sort of. The tutorial explains how to move the ship, but not why you can't just steer the thing. Until you know about the 1Hz server clock, it seems an inexplicable omission, and I don't think it's at all remarkable that people ask. |

Well, they explain how to move the ship (double-click over there). They don't have to tell you "well, you can't use WASD for reasons".
Same as any other game -- they tell you you can move with WASD ... but don't tell you "well, you can't move with the mouse for reasons." One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia |

No, the tutorial doesn't have to. But since it doesn't, and since if one doesn't know about the server clock it seems like an obvious feature, it is not surprising that people sometimes ask why that feature is missing or how to enable it, and it's ridiculous to berate them for asking.

And if the game is one of a sort where you would ordinarily expect to be able to move with the mouse, you might quite reasonably ask why you can't, or how to enable mouse movement. |

Think of it this way: you're not directly controlling your ship so much as you're commanding it. The equivalent would be not so much Freespace as Homeworld. I got confused on that point when I started, as well; it took me a bit to realize that I wouldn't be able to "take the helm" of whatever ship I was in. It is recommended to drop all assumptions about EVE based upon other games.
If you try to play EVE like another game, you will likely be met with very limited [read none] success and / or enjoyment.
Your best bet is to experiment, and to ask. This is the right place to do it, though a forum search before posting is a good habit to get into.
Feel free to EVE-mail me questions if you don't want to post them. I'll do my best to answer them!

The Server clock has been mentioned as one reason why direct control over a ship is not available.
Another more "Immersion" based reason is not directly obvious to new players: EvE ships are too slow and large to make this Kind of "fighter" like flying practical.
While you start in a frigate that at first glance can be mistaken for a fighter craft, and I admit some of the more speedy frigates may even be pilotable as such. The General eve ship behaves more like a seaborne warship than a fighter plane.
You do not do dive bombing attacks, you maneuver for an advantegeous firing position for you weapons batterys or send your drones at the enemy while trying to move into a disadvantegous Position for the enemy to shoot back.
The moment you reach cruiser sized ships these also tend to maneuver so slowly that any twitch based kind of control becomes cumbersome.
EvE ships are best seen as being commanded by the admiral on the bridge and not the lone pilot in a cockpit. (Well technically there is a lone Pilot in a capsule.... but I mean the cinematic picture...) |

The server clock is irrelevant; the game features a particular sort of ship movement command GÇô why it does so is immaterial, all you need do is use the method that is provided.
Nobody is berating the OP for asking why something is missing, since they asked no such thing. They asked about controlling ship movement and it was pointed out that ALL the answers are clearly explained in the starter tutorial GÇô and then they had the damned cheek to come back with an assertion that this is not true! I make no apology for taking offence at that.

Guys... I think we are beating a dead horse here.
Newbie asked about how to do something. Newbie got the answer plus an explanation on why it is the way it is.

That's absurd. The game features a particular sort of ship movement command and the first question a reasonable person will ask about it is "why?"
If you want to know why, you can either come up with a lot of pointless in-universe rationalisation... or answer the question sensibly, in a way that makes it entirely clear why you can't steer the ship, by simply explaining about the server clock.
Quote:They asked about controlling ship movement and it was pointed out that ALL the answers are clearly explained in the starter tutorial
Well, no. They aren't. The question "why?" is not answered (which is fair enough), and it's not explicitly stated that you can't steer the ship (which is also fair enough, but again it's no surprise that people expect to be able to do so and think they must have missed something).
Oraac Ensor wrote: I do not understand why anyone would "ordinarily expect" any such thing. If you come to a different game you would surely "ordinarily expect" it to have its own methods.
Would I? When I play a first-person shooter, I expect to be able to aim with the mouse. When I play an RTS, I expect to be able to select and order units with the mouse, and use keyboard shortcuts to select and build units. When I play a roguelike, I expect to be able to move around with hjklyubn or the number pad. And, since EVE doesn't exist in a vacuum (aha), when I play a game about flying a spaceship, I am surprised at first not to find a UI feature that is present in essentially every other game about flying a spaceship - large or small.
If it was technically feasible, one would expect EVE to offer direct flight control. |

This is one of the most common disconnects between the way eve is actually played and what the expectations of eve are from a new players perspective. The only way to manually move your ship is to double click in space. The ship will go more or less in the direction that you double clicked. The way it was explained to me when I started out and wondered the same thing - is that eve is not a spaceship flight simulator, but rather a space RTS game. More then any game I have ever played, eve has a lot of disconnects between expectations and real game play. Either you move past them or you dont. But if you can move past them, the game play is actually worth it. I don't play, I just fourm warrior. |

Because just about every other game that has ever been made about a ship moving around has movement as the op suggests. Eve is somewhat unique and flies in the face of newbee player expectations as evidenced by the fact that the op's question is very common. I don't play, I just fourm warrior. |
