how, or where, do i find the directory to enter the corrections?
Go to the search glass top right, type 'terminal' and choose the application you find. Then just enter the command anywhere, do this every time you want to start the game.
export COMPUTERNAME=`hostname -f`;open /Applications/EVE\ Online.app
Exactly as there, the direction of the quotes matter etc so copy/paste |

Yes, copying and pasting
export COMPUTERNAME=`hostname -f`;open /Applications/EVE\ Online.app
in Terminal also solved the problem for me. Thanks, OP. |

The fix works.
Here is a variation for PlayOnLinux Users.
export COMPUTERNAME="hostname -f";/usr/share/playonlinux/playonlinux --run "NAME OF VIRTUAL DRIVE HERE"
Example: export COMPUTERNAME="hostname -f";/usr/share/playonlinux/playonlinux --run "EVE online" |

exporting works for me, also:
Quote:export COMPUTERNAME = `hostname -f`
and then lanching the game from the console. Seems no further prob arises. |

Hi guys, just wanted to add that my launcher isn't working properly either. It looks like html code page. I tried the work-around thing and after supplying me with lots of "cant load stuff", "things not compatible", "things not accessible" etc, eventually it worked. But launcher still is weird. |

Just curious for future reference, when the EVE launcher has problems, or the game doesn't load, what logfiles are you guys looking at to get clues? I am curious where this variable showed as problematic.
Was it useful to use some of the logs noted here: https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Mac_bug_reporting#Generating_Log_Files ? |

Okay read through this whole thing and no one has posted simple easy follow directions on how to enact the workaround. 1. How do you open a terminal in a mac? (Not everyone knows) 2. Do we type this as is or is there something in this line that needs changed? ( export COMPUTERNAME=`hostname -f`;open /Applications/EVE\ Online.app ) |

your eve client is probably installed in a weird place then so it would be different to yours, would need more info about your setup to really be able to help

Yesterday i lost a 100mil ship because of game freeze and when i reconnected i was in pod. Some days ago, the server was inaccessible for a full day. There is always bugs, all the time and of course it is never ccp fault, and when you ask for a refund because you lost a ship because of their socket close bugs and others, they don't reply or say no. And we are paying them for this. If it is so buggy and unplayable, stop making pay peoples, make it open source
Sounds to me like someone forgot the first rule of EVE Online: Always fly what you can afford to lose.
Besides, 100 mil isk isn't that much. Its what, a few hours of mining or mission running in high sec? |

Similar here. I imagine this has something to do with the fact that Steam likes to place things in ambiguous and ridiculous folders. |

For people who don't know how to do this work around, it's relatively straight forward.
1) Open your applications area and scroll down to Utilities 2) Open it and look for terminal 3) Once open, copy "/Applications/EVE\ Online.app/Contents/MacOS/launcher" (excluding the quotation marks) and just paste it into the terminal area. 4) Press enter and the launcher should open by itself. It will come up as a different icon compared to what will usually pop up.
This is what worked for me, and i haven't messed around with EVE's files or moved it or anything like that. Can't say it will work for everyone but that's how i did it.
N.B. You should leave terminal RUNNING the whole time you are using the game. I closed mine and the game shut down with it so just keep that in mind. i'm not tech savvy so if a captain wants to explain why that happened, feel free to.
Edit - I can no longer access the game using this way. not sure if it's because of closing the terminal or what... |

To fix the problem on Mac with Steam I had to do the following:
1) Open a Terminal window. 2) type this: sudo pico /etc/launchd.conf * You'll have to type in your password. 3) In the text editor, copy/paste this: setenv COMPUTERNAME anyname 4) Press CTRL-O and hit enter to write the file. 5) Press CTRL-X to exit the editor. 3) type this: launchctl < /etc/launchd.conf; sudo launchctl < /etc/launchd.conf * This applies the changes to launchctl without having to restart the computer.
After that, Eve started fine.
The reason the original workaround posted above won't work for Steam is because of the way Eve needs to be loaded from Steam itself. This fixes the problem by making the COMPUTERNAME environment variable operating system wide. So you can just start Eve normally. This should work for non-Steam OS X users as well. |

This is an issue with the client. There is not much that can be done except letting the devs do their work, then rebuild the client and deploy it again. Be assured that everyone is working as fast and best as they can.
After the most basic blunder a developer can make occurs, something certainly can be done. I think a little diligence and testing is in order. |

CCP- Since you guys obviously no longer test changes (as demonstrated in Crius), could you please make an attempt to be helpful in this situation. You are preventing paying customers from playing the game. I understand that you cannot give a time estimate and are working on it. Might I suggest that you do 2 things to notify us of updates to the fix:
1- Create a new thread in this section of the forum titled :"Mac issue updates" and lock it. This way we can subscribe to it, and get notifications when you unlock it, post updates, and lock it again. Subscribing to a thread that will no doubt be a dozen pages long by the end of the day is not a good option. 2- Post updates to the fix process on social media. Use both Facebook, Twitter and Google+. That way people who don't have constant forum access can get notifications.
Your current approach will just **** of a section of your customers that already feel forgotten by CCP. |
