Lesson 17: When scouting and there is a 100 AU warp involved, be mindful of the difference in travel time between, say, a CovOps and an attack Battlecruiser. The mishap detailed below would likely have been avoided if I hadn't forgotten that basic fact.
Lesson 18: When moving into a new portion of losec, making sure you actually have standings worked out with the locals that you think you have standings worked out with is important.
Bad things happen when you don't. Fortunately, the CEO of my aggressors noticed the oversight right away and fixed said standings.
Lesson 19: When you pop someone due a standings mishap, prompt reimbursement and apologies speak much about your character. I got the former from their CEO and the latter from both the CEO and the pilots involved within minutes of the incident. Kudos to these fine folks, and I look forward to flying with them in the future.

If you like, but I consider the issue resolved. I suppose it depends on whether Zappity feels appropriately mocked. I know I would.
In all seriousness though, stuff like this I really enjoy reading because it provides me the chance to avoid making the same mistakes, and instead discovering whole new ones. Or failing to recall the lessons learned here and repeating their mistakes (or ones similar).

Lesson 20: Valuable loot can be found in plain sight if you but look. I was on the prowl again looking for POS mods to shoot in losec when I hit a veritable jackpot. Nearly half a billion ISK in damage inflicted, and about 150 million ISK worth of loot from various array drops. All inflicted by one guy in a stealth bomber roaming in losec just four jumps from Amarr.
What made this especially interesting is the fact that my victims seem to have been offline, or at the very least inactive on any killboards, for almost a year, so there's every indication that this stuff had just been sitting out in space, ripe for the plucking for some time.
There's content out there people. Lots of it. Right under your stinking noses!
Go find it!
NOTE: This lesson in no way invalidates Lesson 16. Lesson 20 expands upon Lesson 16, and emphasizes the importance of getting out there and finding/making content instead of waiting for it, without in any way negating the value of Lesson 16.
Corollary to Lesson 20: The loot fairy is, and forever shall be, a fickle mistress.
Lesson 21: Unanchored POS mods can be scooped by anyone who has cargo room to do so. Shortly after the incident described immediately above, I accidentally warped to the wrong moon on D-scan while looking for offline towers. I land on grid and find a full ring of medium AC batteries...but no tower. They were all unanchored and undamaged, so I hurried in my blockade runner to come scoop them, earning me a cool 20+ mil ISK. (It was a very good weekend for me.)
Whether they were left by attackers who just tanked their DPS or by the POS owners who simply left in a hurry I may never know. A small part of me will always wonder.

Lesson 22: The EvE forums are as much a part of the game as the game itself. A recent bit of forum warrioring on my part landed me, in addition to some outstanding comedy posts, a legit, fair, honest 1v1 fight, which I happened to win. That 1v1 has led to another pending 1v1, and rumors of a Thunderdome-style series of C&P grudge matches forming.

Lesson 23: Legit, fair, honest 1v1 fights do exist in EvE. They just may require some legwork to make happen.

Lesson 24: Having access to industry and research capabilities is quite useful. Yesterday I popped a small collection of offline industry and lab arrays that belong to a seemingly dead corp. Typically when this happens all I get is killmails, but this time I got something...else. Each array dropped a sizeable chunk of loot, and in the end I made off with over 120 million ISK in research & production goods and a few BPOs, plus a very large assortment of BPCs, including some T2 PBCs, that I can't even begin to estimate the value of. Score!
I looked into the value of the T2 BPCs for a quick sale, and realized that I had everything necessary to use said BPCs. I logged on my industry alt and realized that I could easily double my take by producing the T2 items in question instead of selling the materials and BPCs.
Sometimes, it is better to create than to destroy....

Lesson 26: Target Management is is a skill for both characters and players to master. I was recently transiting a losec loop and suspected that I was being run into a trap at the hisec exit. Instead of logging off or hiding, I ran towards the trap figuring that I'd likely have some fun either way.
I was flying a PvP-fit Vexor Navy Issue, and upon jumping in I saw a Prophecy, a Rupture, and an Ashimmu on the gate, with two more from the same corp in local. I didn't like the odds, so I decided to try running. As I'm about halfway through my align, I see a warp scramble notification and prepare for the worst. Yet, somehow, I warped anyways.
It turns out that one of their pilots had warp scrambled...one of their other pilots.

Oh that accident happens quite often I thinkGǪ While doing some cloaky logistics, I remember seeing this spider tanking Vexor gang who were repping each other at the Sahda gate in Shajarleg, waiting for hostiles. Once the several hostile BCs jumped in and appeared on grid, one of the on-screen notifications were announcing a Vexor scrambling another Vexor of the same corpGǪ
The Vexors had won the battle in the end, but also they had certainly learned a lesson about target management. Actually, you learn something new in Amarr lowsec everyday. It's a truly entertaining area and I hope to get back there once RL leaves some time for those shenanigansGǪ and maybe I will see those Vexors scrambling each other again, who knows.

Lesson 27: When repping your POS, the time to online the defensive modules you've already repaired is before the gank Talos lands on grid and starts shooting at your suspect logibros. In a near throwback to Lesson 1, today I found a POS being repped by several suspect ships sitting stationary just outside the POS shield. Unlike Lesson 1, this POS was in losec which presented the very real possibility of being retaliated against when I chose to engage said suspect logibros.
Unfortunately for the POS owners, they had neglected to put any of the defensive modules back online, so their POS was largely defenseless*. I was free to engage targets at will for at least as long as it took to get their first Warp Disruption Battery online. I figured that, at best, I may get one of them.
Unfortunately for me these folks were flying Guardians and were awake at the keyboard (unlike the T1 logibros of Lesson 1), so they got inside the shield before I could kill any of them. T2 Logi cruisers are tough nuts to crack.
No kills generated, no losses sustained, but some fun was had and some friendly smack was talked after I made good my escape. Good times.
*Defenseless...except for those three carriers. Yeah, this was a bit ballsier move than the Lesson 1 gambit, but more fun. Such is EvE.

Lesson 28: Sometimes the best part about knowing it's a trap is springing it. I had cloaked eyes on the hisec exit gate for a losec loop, and sitting on gate was a Cynabal. A few dozen km off was an Osprey, and somewhere in local was someone from the same corp as the ships I could see. Looking for a fight, I decided to spring the trap.
I jumped in my now well-tested Vexor Navy Issue and immediately approach the Cynabal. A Rapier decloaks and all three aggress me. I manage to get hard tackle on the Cynabal and neut him down so he's trapped. The rapier has me webbed, but keeps about 40km off so he can't tackle me. As my shield and armor melt away, the Cynabal's shields are dropping far too slowly for my liking. As I suspected, the Osprey is remote repping him. By the time I hit structure, the Cynabal's shields are only at half. Not good.
Then, the tides turn. I see my drones start to take damage and realize that they must have shifted DPS. My structure HP holds for a bit, and the Cynabal suddenly drops like a stone. I don't know if the Osprey ran out of cap, flew out of range, or something else entirely, but I managed out-DPS it's reps. The Cynabal dies quickly without remote reps under heavy drone and gate gun fire and without anyone else tackling me, I warp away at 20% structure.
This was a 3-on-1 fight with hostile logistics on the field. By all rights, I should have lost. The next time I try it, I most likely will. But this time...this time I didn't...and that's the best part about springing a trap.

Hey thank you! Yes, it was the first time that I finally had a fight with other players, living in lowsec it was only a matter of time before it happens. And yes it was fun, I had some "internal vibrations" even if my options were limited by the time. But I finally launched my warriors against the Orthrus; after all it's better to die fighting than doing nothing. And don't laugh but I was happy to put a single dent in its shield . You are right it isn't comparable at all with shooting crosses, that was really tense and fun. I saved my main's ship and the pod of my alt, I consider myself lucky. The pod really warp off like an arrow if you align it before to be exploded. Of course at the end I put the obligatory "gf" in local and had a little chat with the guys, that was cool The loss is OK, it's just my stupidity to warp back, but anyway like one of the "ebil" pirate said; "**** happens" |
