Well, again layoffs at ccp recently...
But why focus the attention now on so many different projects during hard times, instead of just sticking with their main project and what they do best?
What you guys think regarding this? Is it wise to compete with Star Citizen at this point for a space sim?
Dust was a failure, this vampire game was cancelled, now Legion, Valkyrie... and no major improvements lately in its main game?
So what you think CCP should do? |

I'll be happy when Star citizen and all these other space games launch so that they can join SWTOR, Black Prophecy, Jumpgate, Star Trek Online, Star Wars Galaxies and the dozen other games that over the last 11 years held the mantle of "new game that's going to have an affect on EVE so CCP better do something about it now!!!!"..
Side note, none of them had any affect on EVE at all. At least after SC comes out we can embark on the next "what game is gonna do it" speculation fest. Potential Irony: EVE Valkyrie is gonna kill EVE. |

I see a lot of hatred towards my regular eve related thread.
Dust is also a CCP product and already dead pretty much. There are other games out there that are just as old as Eve and doing much better, but this is not the point of the argument.
I just wanted to see people's opinions, if people tend to agree to stick more with Eve Online's main game instead of doing so many projects at the same time, some of which fail during the planning stages, others, shortly before they come out... I wonder if CCP has not learned yet that their strength is with its main game.
My point? Instead of spend (waste) so much money on other projects, why not rather invest it here where there is nothing to lose? |

Define "kill EVE"?
Subscriptions flowing - money coming - profits.
There are anywhere between 21000 to 43000 players on Tranquility. Everyday I go by a highsec run I see countless obvious mining alts (unimatrix). I doubt there are that many unique players as of something like...2 years ago maybe? I've only played for 8 months but it has been like this ever since I started.
And yet there are something like 400k subscriptions? And plex transactions amount to 2000 per day? A lot of money going in and out for a "dead game"...
The other concern would probably be - is this really a game or just a posh online club for the rich ladies and gentlemen? |

Valkyrie is not a space sim. It does not compete with SC in much the same way as SC does not compete with EVE. I think they should just release their VR-centric arcade space shooter and let us blow some fools up, already.

Valkyrie is not meant to compete with SC (nor E:D) Valkyrie won't be real until VR sets are delivered, which may not happen until Xmas 2015 or later Valkyrie was *hawezome* in 2013. In 2015 it will be taking serious heat from other VR games like Enemy Fighter
As for EVE Online, apparently the new release cycle has stabilyzed the ACU landslide at around 25,000 ACU, which was fine enough after Incarna and also back in 2009.

I think Valkyrie looks really promising. I plan to buy/sub when it comes out. I hope they develop some interesting interactions between Valkyrie and Eve players. Dust was really only interesting because it was based in Eve, but the games had NOTHING to do with each other. At least in Valkyrie you are still flying internet spaceships. |

While the modern VR sets looks really exciting and would make a game like Valkyrie come alive, there is no reason the game would not be perfectly playable on a standard TV. There have been many flight dog fight style games that because popular without VR. |

Let's understand something:
Star Citizen isn't going to be any competition for EVE, at all. For several reasons... but I'm only going to name two:
1: The majority of players will find SC boring and uninspired. The PvP in SC will be next to nonexistent, and the PvE will be even less challenging than EVE's. And if anyone thinks that SC will be a safehaven that protects you from griefers, I have a bridge you might be interested in buying.
2: SC isn't even going to be a thing, at all. If it's not blindly obvious by now that guy is going to just pocket the 52 million dollars he's raised and run, I honestly feel bad for you. The investors seem to be turning to a "too big to fail" mentality... and, well, we've seen how far that's getting the US government with our new fighter plane.

Can I just say, even though this is in the wrong forum...
I never expected Star Citizen to compete with EVE, but having been an avid Wing Commander fanboy all my life, ever since the first game, I didn't just have high expectations of Star Citizen, I KNEW it was going to be great. Not just great, wonderful. Groundbreaking. TEH PURE SEX!!!!
When I actually got to test it...
I nearly cried. I'm not exaggerating. I am, after all, a Wing Commander fanboy. I'm also a Star Wars fanboy, I almost cried like I cried when Chewbacca died in Vector Prime.
I'd been playing the Elite: Dangerous Alphas up until then, and then the Beta as well. Considering how much funding each one has had put into it, Elite kills it by a galactic mile. If you want to know how big a galactic mile is, take a country mile and multiply it by infinity. That's a galactic mile.

Valkyrie is the response to people wanting EVEVR or whatever it was called to become an actual thing. Legion is the response to people wanting DUST on PC, which is where it was wanted all along.
DUST is/was a Battlefield clone on a console, and thus was always going to be bad and die. WoD was something something vampires something, and thus was always going to something something vampires something oops I've been made redundant.
As regards EVE, they just went back and reworked industry from the ground up, and apparently plan to rework a few other core systems as part of the building stargates something something plan. So even if it becomes another something something redundancy plan, we still get more work done on the core systems of the game than has been done pretty much ever. [witty image] - Stream |

I am not sure how a "game" which is based on a "wow that looks amazing"-techdemo and no game concept can compete at all. It would really surprise me if CCP delivers a game which is actually fun to play once the initial excitement about the VR stuff has worn off. the Code ALWAYS wins |

Sigh....
Valkaryie is not ment to compete with SC. It started out as a simple project for the rift, because well, the rift is freaking cool and geeks gotta geek. So a few guys made it, played with it, and then it got to the attention of management who went 'hey this is cool... lets show this and a few other things at fan fest and see what happens' and the players at fan fest latched on to it like a cow suckling its mother. So managamnet again went 'ok... that was better then expected... I think we can make money off this' Boom, eve VR becomes Valk.
The layoffs have nothing to do with eve, or valk, or even dust/legion. They happened because a project was killed. And ccp decided that to do what they need, they don't need that many devs/whatever. When a company changes focus, they cut divisons and people. Its sad, it sucks, but its business as usual.
This whole 'CCP should just focus on eve' is a HUGE no-no in the business world. ESP if you are dealing with entertainment. If CCP is a video game company, then they need more then one game to survive. Because if eve dies, or has hiccups, CCP suffers. But if say Valk is decent and brings in some money, and legion/dust does as well, it will make CCP and in the end EVE stronger.
I personally think CCP killing WoD was a STUPID. But I also think WoD should of come out in 2009/10. But as CCP changes focus to New Eden on PC, other projects will die.
Making WoD, Valk, And Dust/Legion is smart in the business sense, as in having all yoru eggs in one basket, esp if that basket is eve, means your growth will be very limited, and risky. OMG Comet Mining idea!!! https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=331766 |

They can't focus just on eve, that is stupid from a business perspective.
And I think you are wrong, Valk will at least make some money, I think it will at a bare min do better then dust did. If its fun and enjoyable people will play it. If its bundled with a rift, i.e. you get valk for 'free' when you buy a rift, it will get a good amount of people to try it OMG Comet Mining idea!!! https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=331766 |

There have been many flight dog fight style games that because popular without VR. I don't know if you've watched the Valkyrie footage, but it really looks like its depending on the VR gimmick to carry the game. I know some (most?) will disagree with me, but it doesn't have the sense of splendor or scale that eve (or even dust) do. One of the trailers has a fly by of a station, and I couldn't help but think that it looks like a toy in comparison to what we have in eve. So you found out that an alpha build of the equivalent to the arcade machine aboard the Tiger's Claw is not like the whole Wing Commander? That's not surprising.
Now compare the Arena Commander to that arcade machine aboard the Tiger's Claw, and think that it's not done already. That will put things into a bit of perspective.
