It is common in both Null and WH for cloakies to hang around, either waiting for an easy kill or waiting for the system to die down enough to rat in peace. Now if it's someone hunting for PvP, its semi-easier to deal with those kind of foe as they eventually come to you and you could lay a smart trap for them to fall into. However, it is always them who has to make the first move. Secondly, a cloaky camper waiting to rat in peace would be even harder as he wouldn't rat or mine while there are others in system, and remain cloaked. You could lay bubbles at all the sites with cans but there comes the problem where he is aware of this and finds another system.
So here is a solution. Short of a module that 'pings' for on-grid cloakies, probes would be the best solution, as it would actually require the player to work to find a cloaked ship, and give the cloaked ship a chance to change position or leave. However, these probes would be different in the way they perform compared to scanning probes. When it comes to cloaks, there is still the release of radiation or heat from the cloaked object. Now, with cloak on, of course this would be greatly reduced but it would still be there, not to mention other anomalies that may indicate a cloaked ship. The probes would be designed to find such anomalies and close in on it. From here, the probes would only be able to locate a 'general' location of the cloaked vessel, roughly 10 km in diameter, leaving the hunters to traditional decloaking methods such as deploying bubbles and swapping drones. Again, providing the cloaky is lucky not be warped on top of, he/she would have a chance to escape.
Now, as a cloaked ship moves, further radiation/anomalous effects would occur while the engines are spulled up (allowing the prober to 'determine' that the cloaky is on the move. The prober would expand his probe's scan radius so that he might be able to get a path of travel). Again, not as great as a decloaked vessel but greater than it was sitting still. This would allow the prober to get a smaller and smaller envelope of space each time a possible location is extrapolated providing the prober is good at probing. The probes would be able to 'pick up' the moving trail of radiation. and follow its course...or more so the prober would have to follow the course of the radiation trail. As the cloaked ship drops from warp, a brief and small increased 'pocket' of radiation is formed at the warp in. This 'pocket' only visible for 15-30 seconds so the prober would have to work fast. If the prober is successful then the probable location would be narrowed down to perhaps 5,000 m.
This technique would require the prober to always be probing vs hunting with the pack. The probes would still have the hour long lifespan (and of course the time it would take to pop new probes would be sufficient for the cloaky to get away and leave the hunters back to square one, providing the prey is paying attention to d-scan). The downside to these probes is that they wouldn't be a good method of pinning a decloaked ship like combat probes can. Again, the purpose of these probes would not to be to decloak or pin an exact location, but to extrapolate a possible area a cloaky is located at. |

I hate all those people that afk cloak in my wormhole. I don't feel safe seeing their names in loc-nope sorry don't have local. I don't give a flying **** about some buzzard I can't see. I wonder if that could be a solution? Hmmm Schrodinger's Hot Dropper - The Fate of Forum Alts - Click me! Click me! |

IBTL. At this point we could prolly have an "Changes to cloaking mechanics" subforum.
Thanks OP for adding zero new ideas and only serving to prove yet again that most the people who want it changed, don't really understand why it is the way it is.

I like your idea. We need a way to detect afk cloakies.

No.
This is not balanced, as being able to see the pilot is present in local chat, combined with inability to locate them by normal scanning, you KNOW a cloaked presence exists.
Now, with your awareness that a cloaked pilot is present, you can hunt them down, and cheer maniacally as they return from a bathroom break to find themselves in a med clone.

I just remembered, this idea with hunting probes could work if there is no local, since then you would've to actual, you know, go out to hunt cloakies. |
