Hi folks I will soon be able to use the amarr assault frigs and I have two setups in mind.
I will be mostly soloing level 3's but also helping out on level 4 missions where I will occasionally accidently grab some aggro.
My first idea was to get a retribution due to its high damage output and slap an ok tank on it, thus making the best use of its bonuses
Retribution 4x Medium Pulse IIs
1x 1mn AB II
1x SAR II 1x HS II 1x Cap Relay (named) 1x Damage Control (named) 1x Thermal Plate II
Then I had a look at the vengeance, its bonuses are for cap and to a smaller extent its guns. Seeing how good the cap is and looking at the 2 spare mids after an AB (EW not needed for missions) I thought I could maximise the cap and run 2 Repairers, making for an amazing tank.
Vengeance 3x Dual light pulse laser II 1 x Small Nos
2 x Cap Rechargers 1 x 1mn AB II
2 x SAR II 1 x EAN II 1 X HS2
This would let me run both repairers continously with guns as long as I was nossing for some of the time. I could also run the afterburner as long as I toggled one of the repairers off occasionally.
So, increased damage (I worked out by about 30%) on the retribution or the much stronger tank of the vengeance? This is ignoring the extra range the retribution gets on its guns allowing shorter ranged crystals to be used at the same distance.

How many situations are there were the retribution above wouldn't be able to tank but the vengeance below would be able to tank it. (ie I imagine most situations where the retri couldn't tank it would also be so massively awful that the veng couldn't either).

Until you have Assault Frigate level IV, the retribution is going to still recharge faster than the Vengeance. At assault frigate level III, they both recharge at the same speed. This is because of the retributions natural larger capacitor size.
In regards to your question it isn't as simple as "which ship is the best" because it's going to depend on your engagement. The retribution is a great general PvP/PvE ship because of the tanking and damage output. The vengance is, in specific, simply breathtaking against minmatar ships because of the shields natural explosive/kinetic/thermal resistance, and that makes shield tanking the minmatar damage a peice of cake.
So, who are you engaging most in your level 3 missions? -----------------
